OPERA CAMPUS CREW 1000 MEMBERS - Wahooooo

We are extremely excited to announce that as of yesterday the Opera Campus Crew has reached a landmark – with over 1000 members! :hat: It is fantastic to see such a huge number of students and educators supporting Opera and Web standards, and spreading the word on their campuses.



Of course, what we love to see is not just numbers, but members being active on their campuses. We hope you will continue to inspire each other with your amazing efforts! Here are some of our achievements on the Crew in our seven months so far:

• Present on over 553 campuses in 58 countries worldwide (last week we welcomed Spain to the Crew! :wink:
• Opera installed in almost 6000 computers in campus labs, and many more on the computers and phones and friends and roommates
• 35 presentations and Demo Days held by Campus Crew members, reaching almost 4000 students
• Articles in campus and tech media, translations, interviews, poster displays, checks for standards compliance in websites, monitoring of forums and blogs, help to Opera Software staff organising university tours, and loads more!

And it's great that this week we can mark the occasion by getting together for the Campus Crew live chats. :up: :hat:

These posters are showcasing the features of the Opera browsers, which can be used to hang up around campus or handed out as flyers. The Operamini poster has been out a while. The links to the English & Russian PDF follow under the Operamini image.

Opera And Open Source - FAQ

Why Do People Join The Opera Campus Crew?

Our look at why people join the Campus Crew showed that one of the top 10 reasons is to learn more about Opera. So on the blog we will answer some frequently asked questions that we get at Opera, and which you may get asked by other students in your activities on the Crew!

We are often asked whether the Opera browsers are ‘open source’. Open source refers to software that gives users access to its source code (the codes that make a program executable by a computer), so that users can see or even change the source code.

Are they or aren’t they?...

The Opera browsers are not open source, and we do not have current plans to go open source. However, our developer tools Opera Dragonfly are open source, and customization of browser skins, themes and widgets are built on the open layer of Opera (and personalization seems to be the changes that matter to most users :D).

Opera has great respect for the open source movement, and our products run on the various open source platforms. We believe the most efficient way to rapidly get Opera out on as many platforms as possible is to manage the central code base – that way, improvements made to Opera on home media devices benefit our mobile and PC products, too. It means Opera has greater control over the quality of its browsers, so that it’s the same Opera core that runs on everything we produce.

Common confusions...

•... ‘Open source software’ can also be called ‘free software’, which is different from ‘freeware’. ‘Free software’ refers to the fact that there is freedom to access the source code (ie open source), while ‘freeware’ means the software is available at no cost.
•... Our approach at Opera Software is that the most important thing is not necessarily open source, but open Web standards (or just ‘Web standards’). If Web sites and browsers are created based on Web standards, users' Web experience will be consistent and compatible in all browsers, across all platforms, on all devices. This leads to an ideal environment for innovation and healthy competition in the browser industry, and ultimately gives the user a better Web experience. :idea:
