I have reinstalled Ununtu Linux on my laptop - the first day I installed Opera 9 (less buggy on Linux than what you may have experienced in Windows) and the Anthy SCIM input extension, and now I actually have a laptop that I can type Japanese and English on, in all my applications! It's very exciting!
It's never been this easy before! とても優しいです！ I just hit shift+space to switch between languages. And setting it up wasn't as hard as I'd imagined it would be either.
Ubuntu really is a wonderful operating system. I'm glad that I have Windows installed at home so that I can play all the wonderful free online RPG's from Korea, but, if it weren't for those, I think I wouldn't need anything at all except Ubuntu. It certainly makes a sleek operating system for a laptop.

This painting is from 2004; I just found it on an old hard drive that I reinstalled in my new computer. I found four old paintings that I was very glad to see again. I thought I'd lost the high resolution files for them, but luckily they were still on this particular drive.
I also found my old episodes of Sifl & Olly! So that's exciting.
I haven't been writing any Japanese this weekend because my new computer does not yet have Asian fonts installed, and I don't have the installation disc with me at home! I miss getting to type in my Japanese word processor. I hope I can install it again first thing Monday afternoon.

Tomorrow my department at work is taking a long lunch and going to see a movie afterwards -- I'm glad except that I have a lot to get done tomorrow at work, and trying to get it all done in the morning sounds impossible. So it might mean that I have to stay late on a Friday to get it done, which if you ask me, isn't worth getting to see a movie at lunch time with the department.
That's not interesting, but it is what's happening. Perhaps that is the basis for my Japanese phrase of the day. I wonder if popcorn is also popular in Japanese theaters.
If I'm fortunate, no walrus will interfere with anyone's movie experience.

Okiro - おきる: to happen.

Zenbu - 全部 / ぜんぶ: All of it, Entirely, Completely
Takusan - たくさん: Large (quantity)
Okkii - おっきい: Big (size) (この建物はおっきですね。)
Ookii - おおきい: Big (size) (この建物はおおきいですね。) - ありがとうGreen Aya!
Sukoshi - 少し / すこし: Small (quantity)
Chotto - ちょっと: Just a little (ちょっとまって下さい。)
Chiisai - 小さい / ちいさい: Small (size)
Using some of the words I've learned in the last few days, I am finally able to say, '私の顔は小さい青。' '私の顔は小さくて青い。' - ありがとうjbrou! or 'My face is small and green/blue (Japanese does not always clearly differentiate between the colors green and blue).'
I think at this point I should mention that this blog is in no way intended to help anyone besides me learn Japanese. Lord have mercy on your soul if you try to learn much of anything at all from these awful phrases I string together.
But! If you know Japanese and you can correct something I've said badly, please do correct me in a comment, because that's almost the entire reason I started this blog to begin with (the hope of being corrected and learning more).

Wasureru - 忘れる / わすれる : to forget.
Wasureta - 忘れた / わすれた : to have forgotten.
Wasurenai - 忘れない / わすれない : to not forget. (貴方のお約束お忘れな。)
Wasuremono - 忘れもの / わすれもの : something you have forgotten.
Oyakusoku - お約束 / おやくそく : promise / reservation.

I remembered hearing this word for the first time in an untranslated copy of Kiki's Delivery Service that I wore out on VHS (it's a favorite movie). Remember when Ms. Osono runs to catch the lady with the baby who forgot the pacifier?
Only before I knew any Japanese at all, I tried to translate the scene for myself just based on what was happening on screen, and for a long time I thought she was yelling, "Ms. Oak! Ms. Oak! The pacifier!"
So after fifteen years it turns out she was yelling "Lady! Lady! Something you forgot!" (奥さん is 'lady' - that's okusan).
Come to think of it if your last name was Oak, it would be kind of strange for Japanese people. Maybe not. Maybe it wouldn't matter at all.

Takoyaki - たこ焼き / たこやき: fried octopus balls, my favorite Japanese snack food, a local specialty in Osaka. The perfect snack on the recently passed 'Marine Day'. Literally translated, the characters mean 'Octopus Buring'. I thought you'd enjoy that. (たこ焼きはおいしかったでした。- The takoyaki was yummy.)
Mondai - 問題 / もんだい: problem.
Fukuzatsu - 複雑 / ふくざつ: complicated. (この問題は複雑です。- This problem is complicated.)
Tanoshikatta (past form of Tanoshii) - 楽しかった / たのしかった: was pleasent. (楽しかったね。- It was pleasent, wasn't it?)
Sono Kao! - その顔！ / そのかお！: That face! (その顔！大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)ですか？ - That face! Is everything alright?)
Kakigori - かき氷 / かきごり: Literally 'scratching ice', Japanese shaved ice. A summer treat.
