Several years ago my wife and I bought a tract of land to build our home on. My background in construction made me realize that by buying land and building a home, we could save tens of thousands of dollars. Many of my contacts in the construction business offered me their services at steep discounts. I did most of the framing on the home and had the rest of the stuff I couldn’t handle I subcontracted out. My wife and I have been very happy with how our home turned out. We purchased the six acres of land and built our home for a fraction of the price that homes were selling for in the area. By buying the land and building the house ourselves we were able to put away a nice chunk of money. The other day I got to thinking about something. Our area has really been growing with land development in the past few years. I noticed that an adjacent lot to ours was listed as for sale. I never met the owner but I saw some contact information. I told my wife that it would be a perfect opportunity to invest if we wanted to buy land again. Not only would it serve as a great investment to add to our portfolio, but it would also allow us to control who would be developing the plot eventually. Right now we are considering purchasing the plot but need to find a real estate agent to purchase the land.
