Ông sinh ngày 17.03.1919 tại Montgomery, Alabama, Hoa Kỳ. Ông được học nhạc và chơi đàn từ rất sớm. Năm lên 9 tuổi, Cole đã chơi đàn organ cho nhà thờ, tài năng âm nhạc của Cole ngày càng phát triển. Năm 1937 cùng với Oscar Moore và Wesley Prince, Cole thành lập ban nhạc ba người đầu tiên của mình (The Trio), trong đó, Cole vừa là ca sĩ chính vừa là nhạc công piano. Ban nhạc nổi tiếng với phong cách hoà âm phối khí êm dịu, không dùng trống, chỉ có tiếng hát của Cole hoà quyện cùng tiếng guitar và tiếng piano. Năm 1944, ban nhạc thành công vang dội với “Straighten Up and Fly Right”. Năm 1946, Cole tiếp tục thành công với thể loại nhạc thánh ca:”The Chrismas song”. Năm 1948 công chúng chứng kiến thành công vang dội nhất của Cole với Album “Nature Boy”: hơn một triệu bản được bán ra chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn. Với chất giọng đặc biệt và phong cách biểu diễn điêu luyện, Cole được đánh giá là một trong những ngôi sao sáng của dòng nhạc jazz những năm 40, 50, 60 của thế kỷ 20. Cole mất vì bệnh ung thư phổi ngày 15.02.1965 tại Santa Monica, California, Hoa Kỳ, giữa lúc tài năng và thành công đang nở rộ.
Cole bắt đầu đam mê nhạc jazz khi vào trường trung học Wendell Phillips. Phía nam Chicago những năm 30 là trung tâm nhạc jazz của cộng đồng người Mỹ gốc Phi. Cole và anh trai Eddie thường xuyên đi nghe jazz và nuôi dưỡng hy vọng trở thành nhạc công dòng nhạc này. Cole có thể đứng nghe hàng giờ ở lối vào sân khấu. Thậm chí, ông còn thuộc lòng từng giai điệu trong "Fatha" của nghệ sĩ piano Earl.
Niềm đam mê
16 tuổi, Cole chơi piano cho Solid Swingers, nhóm ngũ tấu do người anh Eddie thành lập. Tới năm 1936, ông cùng các thành viên khác trong nhóm tiến hành thu âm một vài đĩa nhạc cho công ty Sepia Series. Những nhạc phẩm này phần lớn hướng tới thính giả da đen nên hầu như không được số đông công chúng chú ý. Tuy nhiên, Sepia Series đã cổ vũ rất lớn cho nhóm, Cole vì thế cũng không mai một ước mong gặt hái thành công trong lĩnh vực âm nhạc.
Năm 1937, Cole và Eddie gia nhập show diễn Shuffle Along. Sau tuần thứ sáu ở Chicago, những người tham gia biểu diễn lại tiếp tục hành trình trên đường. Thời gian này, Cole thành hôn với Nadine Robinson. Khi công ty Shuffle Along đột nhiên bị "sa lầy" tại Long Beach -California, Cole và Robinson quyết định lưu lại West Coast. Để có tiền thuê nhà, Cole chấp nhận làm mọi công việc có thể. Tiếng đàn của Cole đã bắt đầu thu hút được nhiều người hâm mộ. Ông trở thành người biểu diễn thường xuyên tại Century Club, một địa điểm ưa thích của giới nhạc công jazz ở Los Angeles. "Tất cả nhạc công đều rất chú ý đến anh ấy. Chúng tôi tới đây nghe nhạc của anh vì nhạc của anh ấy rất độc đáo, không giống ai. Thật có một không hai!", một người đã từng gặp Cole tại Century Club kể lại.
"King Cole"
Cuối năm 1937 đầu năm 1938, Cole nhận đề nghị tham gia một nhóm nhạc nhỏ chơi tại hộp đêm Sewanee Inn. Khi đó, Cole vẫn giữ nguyên tên thật của mình. Ông chủ Sewanee Inn hay gọi Cole là "King Cole" và yêu cầu ông thường xuyên mang chiếc mũ miện bằng giấy vàng trong các buổi biểu diễn. Về sau, "mũ miện vàng" không còn nhưng tên "King Cole" trở thành quen thuộc. Nhóm nhạc được biết tới với cái tên King Cole Trio do Nat King Cole dẫn đầu.
Cuối những năm 30, những "ban nhạc lớn" bắt đầu chiếm ưu thế. Sự tồn tại của một bộ ba (đặc biệt là thiếu tay trống) trở nên khá "kỳ lạ". Tuy nhiên, King Cole Trio vẫn phát triển mạnh ở địa phương và có mặt hầu hết trong những hộp đêm ở Los Angeles. Sau này, khi đã trở thành một trong những danh ca nổi tiếng nhất thế giới, ông vẫn giữ nguyên quan điểm này. Tờ Bưu điện sáng Thứ bảy năm 1954 ghi lại lời tự bạch của ông: "Giọng của tôi chẳng có gì hay ho cả. Nó khàn và có vẻ giống như hơi thở hơn là tiếng hát".
Năm 1942, khi Mỹ tham gia Thế chiến II, tay bass của nhóm Wesley Prince nhập ngũ. Johnny Miller là người thay thế, Cole được miễn quân dịch. Bộ ba tiếp tục trụ tại Los Angeles' 331 Club trong vòng 48 tuần lễ. Một năm sau, nhóm ký kết hợp đồng với Capitol Records. Đĩa "Straighten Up and Fly Right" do Cole vừa làm nhạc công, vừa là ca sĩ đã rất thành công trong năm 1944. Ca khúc trong thu âm mới dành cho cả người nghe da đen và da trắng, và không hề có ranh giới giữa jazz và pop. Cole viết "Straighten Up and Fly Right," lấy cảm hứng từ những bài giảng đạo của cha theo âm hưởng trữ tình.
Tiến xa hơn từ jazz
King Cole Trio khẳng định vị trí của mình trong lĩnh vực âm nhạc với "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" và "For Sentimental Reasons". Nhóm còn biểu diễn trong một số bộ phim như The Stork Club, Breakfast in Hollywood và See My Lawyer. "Không thể tưởng nổi sự sung sướng của tôi khi bộ ba chúng tôi được công chúng chấp nhận, chúng tôi đã chứng minh rằng mình đi đúng hướng", Cole tâm sự. "Maria biết tài năng của Nat sẽ bị hạn chế với vị trí là nhạc công piano jazz. Anh ấy không thể ngồi một chỗ để hát và gặt hái thành công. Anh ấy cần đứng lên cất cao lời ca của mình", Duke Niles - một người hâm mộ Cole kể lại. Một số khác cho rằng, Cole yêu thích nhiều thể loại âm nhạc chứ không muốn bó hẹp trong phạm vi của nhạc jazz, Ellington chỉ như người hỗ trợ giúp ông đạt được mục đích. Cole kết hôn với Ellington sau khi chia tay Nadine Robinson...
Ca sĩ sáng giá
Tiếp nối sau "The Christmas Song," Cole chính thức hát với ban nhạc đệm phía sau. "Nature Boy" đã rất được ưa chuộng vào năm 1948. Năm 1950, "Mona Lisa" chễm trệ vị trí số một trong nhiều bảng xếp hạng ở mấy tuần lễ liên tiếp. Dần dần, người ta đã quen với hình ảnh "Cole đứng hát" hơn là "Cole ngồi chơi piano". King Cole Trio cuối cùng giải tán vào năm năm sau. Cole không hề phụ lòng mong đợi của người hâm mộ và cả "bạn đời" Ellington với chuỗi ca khúc "Unforgettable," "Too Young," "Answer Me, My Love," và "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" đầu những năm 50.
Màu da đã mang lại nhiều phiền toái cho Cole. Show truyền hình của ông với NBC - TV bị hoãn không được phát. Những người hàng xóm ở Hancock Park (Los Angeles) thì cố gắng liên hợp với nhau, ngăn cản gia đình Cole chuyển tới đây. Năm 1956, Cole bị một nhóm người da trắng tấn công trong lúc đang biểu diễn tại Birmingham - Alabama. Đôi khi, ông còn bị chính người da đen lên án vì không tham gia những cuộc "gây hấn" chống lại sự phân biệt đối xử...
Cuối những năm 50, rock & roll lên ngôi, sự đua tài giữa những ca sĩ trẻ da đen như Johnny Mathis, Harry Belafonte đã ít nhiều ảnh hưởng tới tên tuổi của Cole. Ông cộng tác và xuất hiện trong nhiều bộ phim, đồng thời tổ chức tour lưu diễn mang tên "Sights and Sounds" cùng nhóm ca sĩ - vũ công trẻ Merry Young Souls. Đầu năm 1960, Cole trở lại danh sách topten với "Ramblin' Rose," và "Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer". Những lời chỉ trích các ca khúc này "sáo rỗng cốt để dễ nhớ dễ thuộc" đã không làm lung lay vị trí của chúng trong bảng xếp hạng.
Cole luôn luôn không thể thiếu điếu thuốc trên tay. Sau cuộc phẫu thuật cắt khối u trong dạ dày năm 1953, bác sĩ khuyên ông bỏ thuốc lá nhưng Cole không nghe theo. Mải mê theo đuổi những show diễn và thu âm đĩa hát, Cole phớt lờ những dấu hiệu bất ổn về sức khoẻ. Cuối năm 1964, ông nhận được "lời chẩn đoán sét đánh" của bác sĩ với bệnh ung thư phổi. Ngày 15/2/1965, ông qua đời tại bệnh viên St. John - Santa Monica - California.
Năm 1991, tên tuổi của Cole đã trỗi dậy trong người hâm mộ khi con gái ông là Natalie thực hiện thu âm "Unforgettable" phối giọng với cha mình. Ca khúc này lập tức chiếm ngôi quán quân trong bảng xếp hạng. Cùng năm đó, Complete Capitol Recordings of the Nat King Cole Trio phát hành và nhận được sự chào đón cuồng nhiệt của các fan nhạc jazz. "Ông không hề bị những xu hướng chủ đạo đương thời tác động, ông sử dụng jazz để làm mới và làm phong phú thêm ca khúc, để rồi tạo nên sức sống vĩnh cửu cho chúng", tờ The Time bình luận về "vị vua đội vương miện bằng giấy vàng" như thế.
