Super Mario Galaxy brings video game entertainment to new levels

, , , ...

Update: This post was featured in N + and N + posted their own review. Go to the bottom of this post for more information.

The 16th of November 2007, Super Mario Galaxy for Wii achieved a higher average rating from websites with video game reviews than The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Super Mairo Galaxy had 97.9%, against The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's 97.5%. And it was well deserved.

After playing Super Mario Galaxy for a while, I'm in total awe. Everything is just so awesome about it. The gameplay is the richest I've ever experienced. Ideas from every era of Super Mario are mixed with new ideas, some never seen before in a game. Among the news are small planets, which have interesting gravity effects. You can actually orbit around some planets with a long jump. Some other news are the way you're launched from launch stars to visit new areas and planets, and things you can ride, such as koopa shells and manta rays and rolling orbs. Among the powerups; the fire flower and the rainbow star (invincibillity) return. You can also fly in this game with the bee mushroom.

The visuals in this game are absolutely stunning and a feast for the eyes. The 3D models are enhanced with beautiful effects. It doesn't matter if the Wii doesn't pack the most graphics power. The visuals of Super Mario Galaxy makes it clear that it's one of the big boys in terms of game graphics on consoles today.

Listen to more of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack here.

The soundtrack is so fantastic it's hard to describe it. It's incredibly rich. You'll find both new melodies and melodies you love from previous games. They're beautifully arranged with their own orchestra, or some times exciting electronica. The soundtrack change with new areas or events, sparking stronger feelings. This is the first game I've played with music that make the game more entertaining.

Super Mario Galaxy is everything you know from previous Mario games and more. It's a long-lasting, entertaining experience. It's memorable and replayable. This game will be remembered as the highlight of gaming in this decade. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excite Truck and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption together with software like The Internet Channel made the Wii much more than worth it. With the addition of Super Mario Galaxy to the Wii game catalouge, I'd say not owning a Wii and one or more of these games is a shame. Because you're missing out on some the best entertainment you can experience today.

Poll time!

, , , ...

I've been running polls in my blog sidebar for a while. And the last time I asked, "What's your favorite posession?"

I recieved 26 answers. Here are the results:

Mobile phone (31%)

Personal computer (31%)

Games console (4%)

Portable media player (4%)

Garment or accessory (4%)

Vehicle (4%)

Pet (12%)

Computer peripheral (0%)

This shows that you, my readers are of the kind that like technology, just like me. Although some of you really like your pets and tools too! You're all really cool! :D

This time I have a new poll. I would like to know what you think of my blog title and slogan. My title is "The Launch Site" and my slogan is "Launch into cyberspace with me". I've recieved some fairly unexpected comments about it. And now more of you get the chance to say what you mean. The poll can be found further down the page in the sidebar. It's a multiple choice poll, so get your clicky finger out! If there's not enough options, you could make a comment here. I really hope you all want to make a comment about your choices!

How to change your blog banner

, , , ...

It's quite simple to change your blog banner with most of the blog themes available. Sleek Shady Beta is no exception.

The default banners are 920 pixels horizontally and 170 pixels vertically. You should scale and crop the image you want to use as a banner to that size. You can make a smaller banner too if you want to. In my case, I made a transparent GIF image of Dr. Launch, drawn by Freek Zijlmans and used really simple CSS to put it in front of the default banner. The advantage of my method is that you can change your theme as much as you want and your banner will still look like it should.

So how do you change your banner image? By editing the custom stylesheet for your account. The custom stylesheet editor can be found by following these instructions:

  • Go to your account
  • Click Design in the ACCOUNT NAVIGATION sidebar
  • Click the custom stylesheet link from the line below the Select a design text

You're now looking at the custom stylesheet editor. You're supposed to add CSS code to it to make modifications to your blog design. So how do you add a banner image of the size 920 x 170 to your design? By adding the following code to your custom stylesheet:

#top2 {
background:url(http://yourwebsite.com/yourdirectory/yourbanner.png);
}

Change the address in the code to the address to your banner image. This only works properly if your background image is 920 x 170.

But if you'd like to do something a bit more advanced, like I did with my banner image, you can do so too:

#top2 {
background-image:url(http://yourwebsite.com/yourdirectory/yourimage.gif);
background-position:bottom right;
background-repeat:no-repeat;
}

Change the address seen in the code to the address of your transparent GIF image. It will appear in the bottom right part of your banner. And it's not repeated. If you'd like to change the place the banner appears, you can change the background-position value. There are some other positions you can use for the background image. Here's a list of the basic ones:

  • top left
  • top center
  • top right
  • center left
  • center center
  • center right
  • bottom left
  • bottom center
  • bottom right

Change bottom right in my example to the preferred position from the list. You can also position the background image in a specific location. You can read more here.

My new blog design

, , , ...

I've installed a new blog design, Sleek Shady Alpha build 72. It's a unfinished theme based on the default blog design The Darkside by Fred. This is what I've been working on the last few days. And I'm going to release new versions soon.

I made my own banner with my cartoon character Dr. Launch drawn by Freek Zijlmans. You can change the banner by adding a background image with #top2.

Like my previous design, White is Fun, this theme has the CC GNU GPL, an open-source license. I added this license because I want people to make modifications to it for the good of all users of the Sleek Shady theme.

There are no instructions and no quick installation code because I'll rather see advanced My Opera Community users install the alpha version of Sleek Shady. If you don't know how to install it, you're not an advanced My Opera Community user. But don't worry, proper instructions are coming when I release the final version.

Get Sleek Shady Alpha build 74 here. And add the blog to your watched blogs or subscribe to the RSS feed to get notified about new versions.

Wear red for the Myanmar opposition this Friday

, , , ...

OK. This is a break from the usual tech related posts in this blog for an important message. Recently, there's been a protest against the military regime in Myanmar (also known as Burma), led by buddist monks. It started out as a peaceful protest, but the reply from the regime has been violence and murder. The Myanmar regime have also tried to silence the media. To do so they've cut the country's Internet connection, phone lines and stopped radio broadcasts. Hotels have been raided to find journalists and several of them have been killed. Despite this, journalists stay in Myanmar to tell the world about this event. The word finds its way out of Myanmar despite the regime's efforts.

Let the protesters of Myanmar know you support them today. Wear something red this Friday, and spread the word!

To help, you can also Digg this story, tell your Facebook friends that you're attending one of these events or these events, blog about this event... In general, do anything that shows your support for the people of Myanmar.

Are you a social bookmarking addict?

, , , ...

Or maybe you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about. Social bookmarking is the action of sharing links to websites to others through a web service. Examples include Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us.

So am I a social bookmarking addict? Maybe. It might say something about me that I use more than one service. As my main service, I use spurl.net. Spurl.net is the most complete online bookmarking service I've seen. It completely replaces any locally running bookmarking system. With instant bookmark search, categories and tags. But there's a catch. Importing your bookmarks might not work. And it's currently in a limited feature set. It seems like it's abandoned by the creators. Because of that I'm using Simpy as a backup bookmarking system if Spurl ever dies.

While Spurl definitely does have some social bookmarking features for sharing, I find friend based systems to be more enjoyable when sharing links. Therefore I'm using Digg and StumbleUpon. Digg.com is a site for sharing links to technology news, and related things that geeks like me enjoy, such as videos. But since Digg.com is mostly technology related, I'm using more mainstream social bookmarking services such as StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon was originally a social bookmarking community based around a Firefox extension. But later they added a Internet Explorer add-on and several people are working on various tools for other browsers such as Opera. There are already bookmarklets available, widgets (including one from a team I've been working with). There are even some Opera add-ons that I don't trust.

Facebook is another alternative if you want to share links with your friends. Facebook is a very popular online community where you can find your friends and socialize with them. Facebook allows you to share links to videos and sites with your friends.

Well. With all these services, it might be hard to keep track of all the ways you can bookmark sites. But people have been trying to do something with the problem. One of these sites are AddThis.com. Sadly, they've done overkill by using extensions instead of more simple browser modifications. But fear not. I bring you the AddThis social bookmarking button for Opera. Just drag it to your toolbar of choice to start sharing links with your friends.

Add This!

For those of you that are using another browser, you can't add this button to any of your toolbars. But that doesn't mean you can't use AddThis. Their JavaScript based site buttons aren't only useful on sites. They work as bookmarklets too. Simply visit AddThis.com and drag The button that says Bookmark to your bookmarks toolbar.

Good luck and have fun playing with social bookmarking!

Office Open XML rejected as a ISO document standard. Why?

, , , ...

Office Open XML (OOXML) is a document format much like the Word document format. Microsoft has developed it together with some companies to allow it to work better with new technologies used in companies today. Office Open XML is an ECMA standard and it's proposed as an ISO-standard. But it got rejected. Why would ISO reject an open XML standard?

ISO consists of several countries and the standards unit in each country can vote for proposed ISO-standards. Most these countries voted no after evaluating OOXML. There are severeal reasons for this. And I have some opinions against OOXML my self too. Most of the countries that voted yes to OOXML have so because of corruption, cheating, because they don't mind Microsoft's market share, or similar. Most of the yes votes were most likely done because of pressure from Microsoft. Microsoft have simply attempted to force OOXML to become an ISO-standard. They've done so because a lot of their monopoly is at stake. They might lose to the free OpenOffice.org suite in the government sector in several countries. Because a lot of governments don't want to depend on a single software vendor like Microsoft.

We already have a ISO-standard for the exact same thing. It's called ODF or Open Document Format. It's the document format used mainly by almost every competitor to Microsoft. Most of the public sector in most countries have a obligation to use ISO-sertified formats like ODF. A lot of them might switch office suite too unless Microsoft's OOXML becomes ISO-certified. Microsoft's monopoly is at stake, so of cource they're trying to force it to become ISO-certified. But why do people vote no? Obviously, the way Microsoft is forcing it to get ISO-certified explains this to a small degree. Because it wouldn't get certified once the standardisation units in each country find out what's going on. The official OOXML specification isn't very good. In fact it's really bad. It's 6000 pages of almost unusable specification, repeatings, references to older formats and broken XML. Yes. XML is a strict standard and the OOXML specification contains several examples of broken XML. It's a document designed to confuse everyone. ODF is shorter with just a few hundred pages, but it's much better specified. ODF is interoperable almost like HTML, while OOXML is not. OOXML also depends on a lot of Microsoft's patents, so a software vendor might be infringing Microsoft's patents by implementing it. The XML part of the name is just a gimmick added to make people think it's an open standard. The only company capable of implementing it properly must be the creator themselves, Microsoft.

So in short, Microsoft is trying to force a bad standard through the ISO-certification, while we already have ODF, before anyone understands what they're up to in order to retain more of its monopoly. So, unless you work for Microsoft, or really want them to have their viritual monopoly, you should be against OOXML. There are simply better reasons to be against it than to be for it.

OOXML - not open - not XML - not standard
