I Fell from the Moon

Don't worry ma'am. I'm from cyberspace.

College

, , ,

Here's a little heads up on the latest events in my life.

My college application was accepted and I'm starting at a University College this July. After three years, I'm confident I'll get my bachelor degree as an IT engineer. I can't wait.

And I just got my drivers license, after spending lots of money on driving lessons, and lots of hard work.

I'll see how my schedule works out when I start college, and hopefully I'll be able to give you guys some regular posts.

Just curious - why was learning to drive such hard work?

Congrats on your driver's license! party

What college btw? OUC?

Yes it was. I had no one to practice driving with. And Norwegian traffic education is quite comprehensive. I had to pay for everything, which was quite expensive considering how I had to take extra driving lessons, and learn everything my self. It took one and a half year for me. And I had to squeeze everything in between my busy schedule on a job which didn't leave me with much energy for other things.

My college is HiG, as I live in the inland in Norway.

Robert Jacobsenrobertj Friday, June 18, 2010 10:37:06 AM

I heard many good words about HiG, and several people moving from Oslo and the areas to study there. How many years are you going to study there? smile

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Friday, June 18, 2010 12:35:12 PM

Three years, under the Y-vei plan.

Robert Jacobsenrobertj Friday, June 18, 2010 6:24:02 PM

Not acquainted with it, but it sounds awesome. Especially when you try to pronounce it in English; [why vai]. bigsmile

I'm sure you'll do great. Thought of any focus for the degree, or is it pre-selected?

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Friday, June 18, 2010 7:23:36 PM

I'm not sure actually, as I have no concept of how studying at a university college is. I'll know after I start.

Robert Jacobsenrobertj Friday, June 18, 2010 8:00:38 PM

At OUC, there are some mandatory courses (I’ve had 12 this far), then the last year we’re getting some courses we can choose between, in addition to some mandatory stuff. It’s not really a focus per say, but it’s some kind of specialization. Then we have the bachelor project, which can take different directions (project management, coding task, analytical stuff, research, etc).

But each university college has its own different way of handling this, I suppose. smile

Actually, that sounds a lot like GUC/HiG's programme.

Robert Jacobsenrobertj Saturday, June 19, 2010 7:35:32 AM

HiO/OUC’s English pages sucks, so I’ll link to this in Norwegian. This is my study programme: http://www.hio.no/Studietilbud/Bachelorstudier/Bachelorstudium-i-informasjonsteknologi

It's got very much in common with the computer science bachelor degree you can take there, but there are more programming and computer topics and less maths, physics and chemistry.

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Saturday, June 19, 2010 11:56:17 AM

Yeah. I'll be needing the extra maths at least, since I have no background in general sciences.

Let's see, it's July already. So, are you up to your eyeballs in homework already? scared

Now the tougher task than getting your Driver's License.
Getting a car to go with that license.
Especially since, isn't Norway supposed to be super expensive for getting anything vs. the rest of Europe?

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Saturday, July 17, 2010 8:12:58 AM

You're right about the homework. Even my weekends are full.

But you're not right about the cars. Used cars can be aquired from $478 and up, and a common monthly wage for a low paying job is $1 915. You won't even have to save up money to buy a used car. Although such a car would probably break down after a few months though.

Suntana Saturday, July 17, 2010 2:37:05 PM

Yeah, I think you should stay away from any $478 cars. scared
It IS likely to be a Money Pit as soon as you get it.
It'll turn into a problem of the month or even problem of the week nightmare.

I remember back many years when my old 74 Chevy Van was on its last legs.
I was such a frequent customer at this particular Firestone Shop that even the Mechanics joked like, "Uh Oh! What is it this time?" Or, "Man, you should be given a Frequent Customer Discount Card." scared There at the end before I retired it, it WAS literally in the Shop just about every month.

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Saturday, July 17, 2010 3:50:24 PM

Yeah. But if you're good with a wrench a spare-part car will save you a lot of money. Just don't expect the body plate color to match.

Suntana Saturday, July 17, 2010 4:40:23 PM

Having Mr. Goodwrench prowess is always a plus. Obviously I don't happen to have that. doh My Dad was a superb Mechanic in his Pre-Computer / Pre-Fuel Injection / Pre-Techafied engine days. But, I just never acquired that prowess.

So, you're saying YOU have Mr. Goodwrench prowess? You'll certainly save on labor.
As for the usage of used parts? I guess it'll depend on the part and its condition.

But, sure, go for it, DrLaunch. Whatever works for you.

I already got that one in my subscriptions. But thanks anyway. smile

I didn't know who got it and who didn't, so I went around posting it and messaging people as well with it. LOL

If you want the photo, its in the photo album at the top of the post.
