How to change your blog banner

, , , ...

It's quite simple to change your blog banner with most of the blog themes available. Sleek Shady Beta is no exception.

The default banners are 960 pixels horizontally and 170 pixels vertically. You should scale and crop the image you want to use as a banner to that size. You can make a smaller banner too if you want to. In my case, I made a transparent GIF image of Dr. Launch, drawn by Freek Zijlmans and used really simple CSS to put it in front of the default banner. The advantage of my method is that you can change your theme as much as you want and your banner will still look like it should.

So how do you change your banner image? By editing the custom stylesheet for your account. The custom stylesheet editor can be found by following these instructions:

  • Go to your account
  • Click Design in the ACCOUNT NAVIGATION sidebar
  • Click the custom stylesheet link from the line below the Select a design text

You're now looking at the custom stylesheet editor. You're supposed to add CSS code to it to make modifications to your blog design. So how do you add a banner image of the size 960 x 170 to your design? By adding the following code to your custom stylesheet:

#top2 {
background:url(http://yourwebsite.com/yourdirectory/yourbanner.png);
}

Change the address in the code to the address to your banner image. This only works properly if your background image is 960 x 170.

But if you'd like to do something a bit more advanced, like I did with my banner image, you can do so too:

#top2 {
background-image:url(http://yourwebsite.com/yourdirectory/yourimage.gif);
background-position:bottom right;
background-repeat:no-repeat;
}

Change the address seen in the code to the address of your transparent GIF image. It will appear in the bottom right part of your banner. And it's not repeated. If you'd like to change the place the banner appears, you can change the background-position value. There are some other positions you can use for the background image. Here's a list of the basic ones:

  • top left
  • top center
  • top right
  • center left
  • center center
  • center right
  • bottom left
  • bottom center
  • bottom right

Change bottom right in my example to the preferred position from the list. You can also position the background image in a specific location. You can read more here.

How to contact me

, , , ...

During my time online I've seen people contact me in the strangest ways. Sometimes resulting in me getting mad at them or ignoring them. So to help sort out confusion I'm going to explain how to contact me. You'll have to respect that I'm not allways by my computer to respond. If I don't respond then try again later.
When you contact me, please introduce yourself and tell me as much as possible about how you found me and why you want to contact me. If you dont have much reason for contacting me but just want to chat, then say so. If you go on jumping right in front of me and scream "Hiiiiiiiiiii!!!!1!!" I might get mad at you.

Blog comments
Use this method if you have feedback to any of the posts in my blog. Comment in the post and no other posts. If you have feedback to my blog in general, comment this post. You don't even have to introduce yourself for this.

Private Messages
Use this method of contact if you want to contact me regarding anything related to Opera Community. You may also use this as a general way of contacting me. You need to sign up at Opera Community to send me a private message. Go to my about and click 'Send a message'. I may not be able to respond right away so then you may prefer another way of contact. Read on...

IRC
Make sure you have a IRC client (f.ex.: Opera) installed on your system and go to the channel #drlaunch at OperaNet and talk in the channel. If you're going to send me a private message you'll better have a really good reason or I might get mad at you. If you have anything (really) private then say in the channel that you need to talk in private, then send me a private message. Remember to tell me that you found me in #drlaunch. Don't get surprised if I don't respond since I'm not always at my computer.

Email
If you simply just want to contact me in person, send an email to drlaunch$gmail¤com (antispam: change '$'into '@' and '¤' into '.' ). I may not be able to respond right away so you may want to chat with me using an instant messenger. Remember to tell me as much as possible about how you found me and why you're contacting me. To make things easier for me, ask me to add you in an email. I'll list my instant messaging programs in order of which I prefer...

Google Talk
If you want to IM me I'd prefer if you used Google Talk. I even suggest that you install this program instead of using one of your current instant messengers. Google Talk supports IM standards and can be connected to using some other IM programs. Sign up yourself or ask me to invite you to Gmail so we can chat with Google Talk. Please give me as much information as possible about how you found me and why you're contacting me. My ID is: ' drlaunch$gmail¤com ' (antispam: change '$'into '@' and '¤' into '.' )

Skype
The good sister of MSN Messenger. Skype has a better call function and the XP version supports video calls. Skype is also a fully functional IM program. Before making calls to me I suggest that you send me a message in text form. Introduce yourself and say how you found me and why you're contacting me. My ID is ' Doctor_Launch '.

MSN Messenger
I've seen the light so I've left MSN. Even though it's the most used IM program I suggest that you use Google Talk instead.

Other ways of contact may become a little too private for me. If you plan to call me on the phone or send a letter through postal mail, please ask me in private to send you this information.

And remember to always introduce yourself and say how you found me and why you're contacting me.

Link exchange and SEO

, , , ...

This is a post for those who want to join my link exchange and place their link in my links section in exchange for placing a link to this site on one of their sites. It also has information about SEO.

I'm happy to promote other websites on this site, but since I'm not in this for the money, I'm a bit picky about the links I accept. I accept links that my readers might find interesting. Largely links related to this blog. For example, a link to a site about fishing, might not be accepted, while a link to a site about gadgets might be accepted.

At the time I'm writing this post, my front page has a page rank of 6. Most My Opera Community blogs have a Page Rank that aproximately as high as mine. This blog is related to technology, the Internet, computers, gaming, web 2.0, the Opera web browser, design, blogging, mobile phones, web design, Google, My Opera Community and photography. I'd prefer linking to a site like that. I'd also prefer links back to me to be on a site related to the things mentioned above.

If you don't have any links related to my blog, don't worry. You can find related blogs in the same community as me here. Or the most visited blogs (they should have a high page rank) here. I have a high page rank because I'm a part of a larger community of bloggers and forum users. Members of this community often link to each other and most blogs here are very search engine friendly. As a result, our page rank is high. Those that have more internal links pointing to them or have a lot of visitors naturally have a higher page rank.

Link exchange

If you're interested in exchanging links with me, please leave a comment below or send a mail to my nickname@gmail.com. My nickname is DrLaunch.

Link FAQ
Q: Why should I link to you?
A: If you enjoyed my site and want others to see it, add a link to me on your page. Or consider joining the link exchange otherwise.

Q: I'm an Opera Community Member. Should I do something different?
A: Yes. I suggest that you spotlight me by clicking Spotlight blog link in the top bar
here. Or you could spotlight the posts you like. You could also, if you want to, add my link to your 'Links' page.

Q: What happens when I link to you in my website, blog or space?
A: By linking to me you don't only send more visitors here and make my site more known on the web. You increase it's pagerank on Google and similar search engines. Let's say someone searches for Thrustmaster 2 in 1 gamepad. If my pagerank is high enough I'll show up on the first page. If the searcher is planning to buy this gamepad the searcher might want to see my review of this gamepad.
This will give me more influence and more visitors.

Q: Where will my link appear?
A: On the "Links" page and in the sidebar on the front page. Your description will only appear on the "Links" page unless it's short and sweet.

Q: What kind of websites do you accept.
A: Non-commercial and free-of-charge websites that aren't selling anything get higher priority. Although, if the site is interesting or sell something my visitors could be interested in, I'll consider it as well.

About my nickname change

, , , ...

So maybe you've noticed my change of nickname, maybe not. This new nickname is pretty new so I don't blame you. You see, I used to be eyeque.

When I first started using the name eyeque I thought it was that super-awesome idea. I was playing with peoples minds, making them think about IQ when they heard my name. After I started using the name eyeque, I discovered my true call. Creation. I made a nice logo and it kind of organically mutated into this wallpaper:

The logo used almost a year to become that wallpaper. At first is was a simple black, gray and white eye in that shape. And then I tried various effects like inverting it and changing the colors to blue.

After a while, I found out about some design companies using the same name, and some japanese assholes did too. Two of them actually. I also discovered the real pronunciation of eyeque. That was "ike". I also felt that it was kind of wannabe. A nickname of a angsty teen looking for acceptance. So I grew more and more uncomfortable with my nickname and finally, I decided it was time to change.

I used to make up random nicknames on my spare time when I was younger. I think I counted a total of 112 pretty unique nicknames I made. So I had many aliases I could use if I wanted. I believe that the name Doctor Launch originated from that time. It's probably an even older nickname than eyeque. I've lost the list but I still remember some of them: Plimox, hebba, Steel'c, Zatox, Moon-key, Ace-up and a lot more names. If you want to, you can use any of them. As long as you stay away from Doctor Launch. And you don't try to impersonate me.

Back on topic. I needed a really unique nickname. The name Doctor Launch came to mind. I couldn't find anyone that used that name. That nickname gives me the opportunity to be more myself. Doctor Launch, the mad alien prof. Yeah. I like it. And I might be able to create a good Doctor Launch wallpaper too.

So now that I've switched, you must think that I give up everything eyeque? No! You're horribly wrong. The eyeque.prv.no art with my old logo on is still my property. Even the tucon art, L-cell art, L-tronic art, eyeque electronics art is property of me. It's all my property unless I've stated something else or the other creator have stated something else. Don't think you can come here and snatch my stuff. And Doctor Launch and the black orb with the mean, red eyes, no mouth and wrinkels between the eyes is property of me. Don't worry though. If you're one of the many eyeques or tucons, you can still make art as long as you make it clear that you are yourself and not me.

Wow. The above paragraph must make me sound crazy. Well somehow that's a bit true. I am more or less mad. Now that I'm more comfortable with my nickname, I'll probably be around as Doctor Launch a bit longer.

Edit:
I feel that the Doctor Launch nickname describes me much better than the eyeque one could. Both in terms of creation, and in terms of personality. Even the Doctor Launch graphics fits to me. I hope that those who know me as eyeque will become just as comfortable as me with my new nickname.
