Spacelog 54 - Beyond infinity

, , ,

I woke up after sleeping out. It was noon and I slept for over a day. After eating some, I went for Noroom's office.
"Ah. You're awake. Did you get enough sleep?" Noroom asked.
"Yes. I feel great. How's the phoecon and drones working out?"
"We've been making drones since you finished the plans. But you forgot to ask Punom for a control program. I had Nimon add the one Punom wrote," said Noroom calmly.
"Oh. And the Phoecon?"
"You can put the Phoecon in the assembler now. We're leaving for the Lhukos system later today. We picked up broadcasting signals from the Libri race there a few years ago."
"How far away are they?"
"127 lightyears. It's been 133 years since they started broadcasting. From what we've seen they're a peace loving race, with only democratic governments. I believe they've started to explore space by now."
"I doubt they've discovered any faster than light travel methods. If so, they would have visited us by now."
"Exactly. That's why we're bringing plans for your hyperspace jump as a gift."
"Good idea. We'll need allies since there are hostile races in this galaxy."
"Yes indeed. We recieved some armor suits from the military, by the way. You should have a look at them. See if you can improve them."
"Will do."

I went to my office to get the phoecon ready. I had a look at the plans and increased the cabin size. "It'd get a bit crammed with Noroom inside," I thought for myself while chuckling. I stopped the drone production and commanded the phoecon to land in the assembler. A few minutes later, it was ready. It seems the armor suit plans were also in the database. The military armor suits were legendary for their amazing power and weapons. It seems the military engineering team tried making them fit for space by adding gravitators and insulation. But that was all. We'd run into the same problems we had with the phoecon during battle. I added the new absorbant coating, a disintegration field generator, the improved plasma battery and radiaton and gravity pulse weapons. With the new shields, the thick armor was no longer needed, so I removed it. Without its armor it would simply be a power suit. The armor suits were already made, so I could add the modifications to them directly via the assembler. Their compartments were attached to the lab assembler, so I could just activate it to start the modification. After a few minutes the suits were ready.

I entered Noroom's office with the news.
"The Phoecon upgrades are ready, and the suits," I said.
"Great! This means we're ready to leave. Are you ready?" asked Noroom.
"Yeah. I just need my backpack and gravipack."
"Tell Nimon and Punom to take the power suits with them."

Later on, we were standing in front of the assembler on Lumino.
"This is it," Quala said.
"Our adventure is just beginning. Libri will only be our first encounter," said Noroom.
I opened the assembler, and the upgraded Phoecon was standing there.
"All aboard, the fun is about to begin," I said.
I sat down in the co-pilot seat, and Gemoc took the pilot seat, Mecolo, Quala and Noroom, took the passenger seats.
"To infinity and beyond! Or something like that," said Mecolo.
"Yeah. Beyond infinity," said Gemoc as he plotted a course for Lhukos and activated the hyperspace jump.

Spacelog 53 - I'm so tired

, , ,

"I'm done with the upgrades and the drones." I was standing in Noroom's office, showing him the new plans.
"My goodness. You should get some sleep. You look exhausted," said Noroom with a worrysome look.
Truth was, I had been awake for days. I should have gotten some sleep but was distracted by my constant wrestling with the physics required for a disintegration field and a coating that absorbs all particles and radiation.
"Yeah, I should," I said while blinking, trying to not pass out in front of Noroom.
"I'll have Nimon run the assembler for you. You should go to your sleep chamber. And don't you dare do anything but sleep. I don't want you to end up in the hospital because of this," Noroom said in a stressful tone.
I barely managed to enter my sleep chamber before I passed out.

"Take a look at the finished plans, Quala. Could you start the assembler for Dr. Launch?"
Noroom was showing me the plans Drauzor gave him before passing out in his sleep chamber. He always puts his work before his health. Poor Drauzor.
"They're not ready yet. The drones are missing the control program. I'll ask Mecolo to write one," I answered to Noroom.
"Poor Dr. Launch. He must have been so focused on the physics, that he forgot that the drones wouldn't control themselves. You're sure you'll be able to add Mecolo's software to the plans?" asked Noroom.
"Yeah. I'm familiar with assembler plans. The components are ready. I just need to add Mecolo's program," I answered.

Mecolo was sitting in his office, studying the computers from the alien ship.
"This is amazing. They're using methods no Plimox ever thought of. This is extremely educating," Mecolo said enthusiastically to me.
"Careful or you'll end up like Drauzor," I said to Mecolo.
"Yeah. I saw him. I know how it is being so focused on a problem, you forget to sleep," Mecolo said in a worrysome tone.
"I kind of feel sorry for him, even though it's his own fault. But that's not why I came here. I need you to write the control program for the drones. Drauzor forgot to ask you before handing the plans to Cemu."
"Yeah. Sure. I'll modify my assist program for the Phoecon. You'll be able to insert it into the plans, right?" said Mecolo.
"That's easy. Thank you," I said to Mecolo with a smile.

I went by Drauzor's room and he had passed out inside his sleep chamber. He was sleeping on his stomack, and forgot to enable the hover function. I clicked the button on his chamber. I also remembered, Gemoc might need to test the new Phoecon systems in his flight simulator.

I entered Gemoc's office and as usual he was practicing maneuers and battle with the Phoecon in his simulator.
"Hey," i said loudly to Gemoc.
Gemoc deactivated his flight simulator.
"Quala?"
"Yeah. I'm here with Drauzor's new Phoecon plans. With plasma weapons, a gravity pulse and absorbant shields. You might want to try them out in the flight sim," I said.
"Oh yeah, he forgot to send them to me before passing out. For having the most advanced brain in any Plimox, he's a dumbshit for sure," Gemoc said while chuckling.
"Aw shut up. He's so dedicated he puts his work before him self. He doesn't deserve your backtalking," I said in an annoyed tone.
"Ok ok. Send me the new plans. I trust the resulting weapons must be awesome," Gemoc said calmly.
"Let me know," I said before sending the plans to Gemoc.

I walked to Noroom's office.
"I gave the plans to Mecolo and Gemoc," I said to Cemu.
"Great. When Punom's ready with the control program, I need you to start the assembler," said Cemu.
"Will do. We're going to start traveling Andromeda with the Phoecon when Drauzor's awake, right?" I asked Cemu.
"Yeah. I believe the Phoecon should be ready to take what ever the galaxy throws at it now. I also have some new armor suits for you and Punom. Want to try it on?"
"Sure. They're space suits with armor, right?"
"Hahaha. That'd be a understatement. The military fitted two of Dr. Launch' gravitators into their powered armor suits. You'll be able to fight alongside Dr. Launch if needed. Come along and I'll show you."

We entered a room near the test cave. Three armor suits were standing in separate compartments behind glass.
"What about Gemoc?"
"The Phoecon is his armor suit. He'll be providing air support during battle. The one on the left is yours. Try it on."
I stepped up to the glass. My login interface covered the glass.
"Access granted," read the interface.
The glass moved back and the suit was raised out and opened. I stepped into it and the holographic interface appeared. I closed the suit and it fit snugly. I walked off the platform. The suit supported my movements nicely.
"I want to take it for a test," I said to Cemu.
"Sure. Just walk into the test cave."
Cemu opened the cave door and I walked through.
"Try the built in gravipack. Jump and try hovering. It should respond apropriately"
I jumped as hard as I could and the suit responded with increased power. I thought about hovering and the suit hovered slowly in the air. This was easy. I tried ascending and the suit rised slowly, while being pulled by gravity. I raised my right arm and fired. A series of projectiles fired from my hand and exploded when they met the cave wall. I flew around some more before Mecolo entered the control room. It seemed like he was done with the drone control program. I landed and put the suit in the compartment.

"I'm done with the control program for the drones," said Mecolo.
"Wow. You're fast. I was having so much fun playing with the new armor suit," I said enthusiastically to Mecolo.
"Heh. But it's my turn now."
Mecolo sent the code.
"Cemu. How many drones do you want?"
"Make new ones continuously until Dr. Launch wakes up. When he wakes up, we're going to add the new systems to the phoecon."
"Are you sure? The nanobots in the assembler will take major amounts of soil from Lumino."
"Ah. Well. There's a few caves around Qeba-9 with assembly materials. Connect the Lumino portal to one of them."

I went to my office. I contacted the global wormhole management and they aprroved a wormhole connection between Lumino and a material cave. I added Mecolo's progam to the assembly plans, and sent the plans to the assembler. I bet we'll have hundreds of drones before Drauzor wakes up.

Spacelog 52 - I'm an eight legged monster with tentacles

, , ,

I used the time before the debriefing to gather my thoughts and come up with a few new ideas. I was in my own world of thoughs.
"Hey mr. philosopher! Are you coming for the debriefing!? Quala asked loudly.
I was startled and looked around with a confused look. Quala chuckled.
"Uh. You scared me. Oh, It's time."
We met up with Gemoc then Mecolo and everyone walked to the meeting room.
"Bah! I'm fed up with all these secrets Noroom is keeping. I bet he'll have something up his sleeve after the meeting as well," said Gemoc.
"Oh shush. You knew he had to keep Drauzors augmentations secret or else he hadn't been allowed to work on facility," said Quala.
We entered the meeting room and Noroom was working with his notes.

* * *

"Welcome. I gathered you here to discuss the Phoecon test mission, the hostile ship, the alien and Dr. Launch' augmentations. The mission was a test flight mission where Dr. Launch would observe mr. Nencho test the Phoecon defense systems and test the new warp capabillity. Afterwards a unmanned hyperspace test was to be done. But it turned out that the Phoecon was put to a more hands-on test. Let's discuss the mission from the start. Dr. Launch and Gemoc. What happened when you were about to start the mission?" Noroom was looking at me and Gemoc and I took the word.

* * *

"We were standing outside the assembler on Lumino. I was about to instruct Gemoc to enter the Phoecon. The first test was going to be weapons and shields." I looked at Gemoc and he continued:
"Before Drauzor could say anything, we were fired at with a particle beam, and barely managed to enter the Phoecon before we were fired at again."
Noroom continued:
"We should have foreseen this. I knew there had been activity around Qeba-9 but assumed it was friendly. So much for being gullible. But. We can avoid it happening again.
The military has some drones with more powerful weapons and defense systems. We can probably adapt them to defend Qeba-9.
What happened after you entered the Phoecon?" Noroom asked while looking at me and Gemoc. I answered:
"After countless hours of simulator training, Gemoc knew exactly what to do in the event of a battle. I enabled the force field as soon as we entered the Phoecon and Gemoc did an evasive maneuver. Gemoc was fast, but the hostile ship was faster at aiming. Our Plasma battery was drained too fast, as the force field used more energy to repulse the hostile fire."
Gemoc continued: "I decided to run a special maneuver I call electron. In this maneuver I circle randomly around the enemy while I fire away. But sadly I didn't foresee the enemy's ability to expand its force field. So the Phoecon was hit."
Gemoc looked at me, and I continued:
"We had to retreat, because our defense and weapons were too weak. I instructed Gemoc to head for the atmosphere. But our energy was drained too fast."

* * *

Noroom looked disappointed.
"I asked my contacts in the military for energy based weapons and defense systems, since the Phoecon was to be operated entirely with electricity. But it seems like the energy demands were too large. Should we use a separate amunition storage?" said Noroom while looking at me.
"No. The problem is the limited plasma battery, the slow recharge speed and the limited firepower. But I have a solution. The current version of the force field is repulsive. It stops the energy of weapons from hitting the hull.
The phoecon solar surface currently only absorbs light, but I can make it absorb everything from gamma rays to radio waves. Having a shield that repulse these energies is a waste.
My idea is to make a force field that disintegrates atoms, so the Phoecon surface can absorb the remaining particles.
These particles can be used to store energy, and power a particle weapon.
I also have an idea for a weapon capable of penetrating a force field. The gravity pulse."
Noroom looked pleased with the suggestions:
"Seems like we're better off by developing defense systems for the Phoecon ourselves. We'll need weapons and a defense system based on your ideas.
Perhaps drones based on these technologies would be better suited for space. Could you create the weapons and drones, Dr. Launch?" Asked Noroom.
"Once I've created and added the new systems to the Phoecon, I can use the plans in drones as well. I'm in."

* * *

"When you were attacked by the hostile ship, you tried fighting, then retreating. But you didn't make it to Qeba-9?" Noroom continued.
"I commanded a retreat to Qeba-9 where the hostile ship couldn't follow. But before I reached the atmosphere, our energy was running dangerously low from the repeated attacks on our force field.
So I saw no other solution than to take us out into hyperspace, a space outside space, even though I didn't know if we would be disintegrated. Luckily we stayed intact," i said.
Gemoc continued:
"Hyperspace didn't have any special influence on the Phoecon or ourselves. But all the shifting shapes made me disoriented, so I had to navigate using the holomap," said Gemoc, and I continued:
"Since I now knew the nature of hyperspace, I knew the gravity fields from the gravitators would leak to conventional space. We went to Sacolon to recharge our Plasma battery before going back to rip the hostile pilot to pieces by intersecting with the ship and using a boost from the gravity wave engine. Gemoc did as I told him and he injured the hostile pilot, allowing us to take the ship to hangar 1 on Lumino."

* * *

"And that's where I, mr. Punom and miss Nimon saw the hostile ship for the first time. Nimon suggested to hack through the hostile ship's defenses." Noroom had a habit of calling Plimoxes by their title and last name from the special forces.
"I figured out that the only way in was through the communication system. I knew Mecolo could figure out the alien computer systems," said Quala.
"The hostile ships communication system was connected to the internal computers but sandboxed. It had a strong layer of security before the internal computers. I found a vulnerability they hadn't thought of, but I had to use brute force to exploit it. Afterwards it was easy to deactivate the defenses," said Mecolo, while Gemoc rolled his eyes because of the geeky language. Mecolo humored Gemoc.
Noroom looked disapprovingly at Gemoc, before he continued:
"We have yet to identify the alien from the ship. But as I though the alien was unconcious and maybe dead from the antigravity burst, I entered the hostile ship and dragged it out. It woke up and tried attacking, So I tried to keep it down. But it was too strong and threw me into the cieling. Illegally but luckily, Dr. Launch had hidden some weapons in the spacelab. And since Dr. Launch was a weapon I kept in the spacelab, he was able to fight the alien."
Noroom checked his notes.
"So Dr. Launch. Thanks to your weapons, special muscle fibres and your NIC you were able to defeat the alien. But frankly, I can't remember how you defeated the alien."
"When my NIC fired, everyone, including the alien paniced. My reaction time must have increased tenfold, because everyone looked like they were moving slowly. I was able to rush towards the alien, stab it, give the forcefield sword a strong boost and etch its insides to dust. All in an instant," i said enthusiastically.

* * *

"I've decided that the spacelab team will be traveling through the Andromeda galaxy and meet new races. As we've seen, not all of these races are going to be friendly. So we need to be able to avoid contact, defend ourselves, and run from the enemy. One part of this is the equipment you're going to use," Noroom was looking at each one in the team as he was talking, "but more importantly, Dr. Launch needs to be able to control his augmentations. Let's start with the augmentations you already know, and you might have yourselves as well."
"Like me, he has a space exoskeleton, is able to survive without air and has improved vision," said Gemoc.
"I have improved muscle fibres my self, but Drauzor's able to store static energy and release it all at once in his," said Quala.
"My cognitive abilities have been enhanced so I'm able to handle math and relations in programming better. Drauzor is extraordinary in physics, science and engineering," said Mecolo
"I have a much higher tolerance of gravity. Other than that, I have no idea about any of my other augmentations," i said.
"You're able to heal your wounds faster. Your NIC can be triggered by imagining that your death is imminent. This might sound like a joke, but you're able to generate a repulsive force field which can be used to stop weapons and launch enemies into the air. Your abilities will evolve gradually when used, through the means of genetic mutation."
"What? I'm going to develop tentacles or become a eight legged monster?" i asked in disbelief. Noroom smiled.
"Yes!" Noroom exclaimed with a grin.
"Aaah!" I got so horrified, I screamed.
Everyone laughed.
"Ha ha ha. I'm joking. Your mutations are controlled by your subconcious sense of self. Any change in appearance is higly unlikely. Because we subconciously think we're more handsome than in reality, your appearance will not become worse. In fact, I'm so envious. Look at this old saggy body," said Noroom while showing his plump torso.
"Your appearance will stay as good as it's now."
"Wow. Thank goodness," I said.
"Well. This concludes the debriefing. After the improvements to the Phoecon are ready and the drones are in orbit around Qeba-9, we're heading for other solar systems in the Phoecon," said Noroom.

Dr. Launch spacelog 52 - What's inside the hostile ship?

, , ,

Quala, Mecolo and Noroom came to the moon hangar to look at the hostile ship we brought in.
"I never knew we had hostiles around our own planet. Good thing you found a way to defeat them, Dr. Launch," said Noroom.
"They were clearly superior in firepower. But they mustn't had any concept about hyperspace. Thanks to that, we could defeat them. But their shields are still active, making it impossible to enter the ship to look for survivors right now. That's why I summoned you, Quala and Mecolo," I said.
Quala, with her amazing insight in engineering walked around the ship, looking at it from every angle, then said:
"I can't shut down the forcefield from the outside. But I have a tranceiver device back on Qeba-9 able to connect with all kinds of signals. Mecolo should be able to hack into the computers of the ship with the device."
"This sounds exciting. I can't wait to begin!" said Mecolo.
"I'll go get it," said Quala.

Quala went back through the portal. And a few minutes later she came back with the device and...
"My backpack?" I asked Quala.
"I have a hunch you're going to need it," said Quala.
Earlier on I made a backpack with contents allowing me to do my work without my lab. The backpack contains communications equipment, nanobots, a product plan prosessor, and a some weapons I kept secret. A pair of gravigloves, amplifying my arm movement energy, and a forcefield sword. A telescopic stick that generates a forcefield around itself to damage enemies. I kept the backpack locked up so no one would know about the contents, because we're not allowed to keep weapons in the space program facilities.

Quala enabled the tranciever device. And started scanning for signals.
"I'm reading a microwave beacon signal. It's the only signal I'm picking up from the craft, so it must be their communications frequency. It's in the start of the microwave spectrum."
Quala gave the device to mecolo, whom started reading the signal.
"This is interesting. When I reply with the same beacon I get a longer signal back. I think it's a protocol descriptor. I think I'll be in in no-time."

Mecolo was concentrating, using his internal computers for all their worth to hack into the ship computer systems. And as he predicted. The forcefield deactivated. And the hatch opened. Noroom walked up.
"Stay clear."
Noroom was a rather big plimox and well trained. Before he became the leader of the space program he was a captain in the government elite forces.
Noroom dragged a heavy, thick creature out. It was a biped with claws, a tail and hard scales covering its body. Its head had large sharp fangs. But it seemed like it was missing a arm.
"I have no idea how to check for life signs..."
But before Noroom could finish the creature started roaring and tried standing up. Noroom threw himself over the creature, trying to keep it down. The creature punched Noroom with its claw. Noroom started punching back with all his might.

This was a good time to find my weapons. I unlocked the backpack and took the gloves and the forcefield sword out. I threw away my lab gloves and equipped the gravigloves. I extracted the forcefield sword, and a thick shiny haze covered it.
"I hoped I'd never have use for these."
The creature threw Noroom into the hangar cieling. And he fell down with a smash.
"Cough! Dr. Launch. You can charge up your movements before unleashing them. Before doing the movement, build up static energy in your muscles. The longer you build up, the more movement is unleashed. Use this to do quick jumps and heavy punches, or hard slices with your... Uhm. Sword."
Noroom seemed a bit irritated that I'd broken the space program facility rules, but but I guess he couldn't say anything because I was a weapon myself.

The creature started stomping towards me. It stopped and puked a ball of some liquid at me. I stepped aside and saw the liquid etch into the hangar floor. I jumped towards the nearest wall, and as Noroom said, I started building up static energy in my feet. I unleashed it when I hit the wall. And jumped towards the creature at an amazing speed. I sliced over its scales and etched a mark with the sword. The creature roared in pain and I used the chance to charge up my arm for a punch. I unleashed my arm and the graviglove amplified the punch so the creature flew into the hangar wall with a smash. Then I Jumped to the wall behind me and towards the creature. But as I was about to hit the creature. It smacked me quickly to the ground with its claws. I was quick to jump away before the creature tried stomping me to pieces. I jumped to the cieling and hung on to the light rack. I threw my sword at the creature and pierced its torso scales. I jumped to the side and used the electromagnet in my gloves to rip the sword out of the creature from the side. The creature roared in pain and fell to the ground. It started leaking a purple liquid.

I jumped towards the cieling, charged my next jump as much as I could, and jumped towards the creature's back. I stomped on the back scales and they cracked. The creature roared, stood up and threw me of its back in the process. I turned around in the air, touched the wall and landed gently on the floor in front of the creature. I jumped towards the creature, charging my arm, this time predicting its movements. As it fenced at me with its remaining arm. Sliced its arm in the process, etching a ugly mark in its arm scales. But then it pinned my foot to the ground with its own foot. It was going to destroy me. I was going to die in battle with this creature. I would either be dissolved while I'm alive by its acid spit or ripped to pieces by it remaining arm. This was the end.

Everything turned black...

No. It turned inverted. It was the hallucination from my nerve impulse controller augmentation. I looked around. Noroom and my team was running in panic for the wormhole, and the creature started running for its spaceship. But everyone moved slowly. While I felt like I could move at normal speed. I ran towards the creature in an instant. Pierced its scales with my sword, and expanded the sword forcefield. A gaping hole was teared in its torso. It fell to the ground and stopped moving.

The creature seemed dead. Everything turned back to normal. And Noroom, Gemoc, Quala and Mecolo was tampering with the airlock to the portal chamber, seemingly still in panic. I walked towards them slowly and said.
"It's over now. I defeated the creature and the danger is over."
Everyone looked around in a confused manner. And they saw the creature dead on the hangar floor.
"It was the nerve impulse controller. It's over now."

Everyone of them looked a bit ashamed of themselves. Then Noroom said:
"You broke the facility rules by having weapons on site. But I'm glad you did or else we'd all be dead now."
"I knew it. I figured out it had to be weapons you were keeping in your backpack. And I'm glad I got it for you." Quala was the only one of us who thought of the potential danger in the situation.
Gemoc continued: "So you're a weapon yourself as well. I can't wait to travel to distant solar systems with you. But Noroom. You broke the facility rules yourself, by keeping Drauzor, a living weapon on site."
"Yeah. I'm sorry. But we couldn't find a better scientist if we tried. Dr. Launch' augmentations are unique. We'll have a debriefing meeting at noon today. Only us five. And this time I'll tell you more. Go get yourselves checked at the medical center. I'll get the security team to take this... thing back to Qeba-9."

Dr. Launch spacelog 51 - Hyperspace

, , ,

The assembly of the Phoecon on Luminio is complete. Gemoc and I went to the moon base to test it. Gemoc as a test pilot of course. This is Gemoc's first time in space. I had to go during the first launch of the phoecon myself, because of my knowledge of wormhole portals. Like me, Gemoc has a space exoskeleton, can gather energy from light and has improved vision and reflexes, making him a perfect pilot for the Phoecon.

We stood outside the assembler on Lumino. A assembler basically uses nano technology to assemble almost perfect products of any kind. This time it was the finished Phoecon in the assembler. I opened the assembler and there it was. The finished phoecon. But as I was about to say Gemoc could enter via radio, suddenly, something flashed behind me and the ground shook. It was a unknown hostile ship. It had just fired a particle weapon on us and missed. Gemoc, which had lots of training in the flight simulator yelled over the radio that I had to open the phoecon hatch. I alredy did before he could finish his sentence. We entered the phoecon as quickly as we could, and Gemoc took the pilot seat, and activated the shield. Gemoc knew exactly what to do, as he took off and piloted away from the ship. Foom! The hostile ship hit our shields with a missile. Energy down to 88%. I could see the ship status from the nanodisplay in my eyes. The Phoecon systems integrated well with my internal nanomachines. I could see the energy rebuilding as Gemoc was trying to evade the particle weapons and the missiles of the hostile ship. Foofoofoof! Three pulses of the particle weapon hit the ship. Energy down to 74%. Gemoc suddenly turned the ship around. Now we were facing the hostile ship.

"What the heck are you doing?" I yelled to Gemoc.
"Relax. I know what I'm doing. I need to concentrate while doing this" Gemoc became entirely focused and throttled as fast as the Phoecon could towards the hostile ship, stopping straight in front of it. I was amazed by his reflexes. I could never have achieved that. Then he started circling around the ship quickly, changing directions extremely fast, and firing our laser at the ship. The hostile ship had shields as well and Gemoc fired away from all directions. As I watched our energy lower steadily as he tried destroying the shields of the hostile ship, the ship suddenly expanded its shields quickly, throwing us off course before contracting its shield again. Energy down to 40%.

"We're not going to defeat it. Head for Qeba-9!" I instructed Gemoc.

Gemoc moved the ship towards the atmosphere as fast as he could, as the hostile ship continued firing its particle weapons at us. 30%. We were running dangerously low on energy. 20%. We weren't going to make it. Our only choice left was hyperspace. We could be disintegrated as we pass into hyperspace, or we could stay intact. 10%. Without telling Gemoc i activated the hyperspace jump. Suddenly everything seemed to turn inside out. It was like looking at everything from the inside, seeing strange 3D crossections of the space-time continum. I could somehow see space bending and twisting, and wormholes stretching out between eachother. It was the wormholes between each city on Qeba-9. I could also see the inside of the hostile ship and how it was patrolling the area, looking for us. But my vision of everything seemed to gradually switch between various angles. It was horrible to look at so I looked away. At least the interior of the Phoecon was in plain old 3D, and Gemoc was alive as well, but looked as horrified as me.

"What is this?" he asked.
"It's hyperspace," I said. "It's where all the wormholes on Qeba-9 go through. We're seeing everything from a direction that doesn't exist in our ordinary space.
"I can't fly through this. Everything is shifting shape and I'm completely disoriented."
"No. I never meant for us to fly using the conventional ship controls here. We're going to navigate using the gravity of celestial objects. Gravity is the only force of our space that acts out here as well."

I deactivated the transparency of the cockpit window, and enabled a hologram map of the solar system.

"The ship autopilot reads the gravity from the Phoecon sensors and navigates accordingly. We're going to destroy the hostile ship by going to Sacolon to recharge, then use the gravity wave engine to destroy the hostile ship's crew from hyperspace. The course plotter works exactly like in 3D space. Try plotting a course for our sun, Gemoc."

Gemoc looked at the hologram. We were orbiting Qeba-9 at the moment. He touched the model of Sacolon and the coordinates and direction showed up. He touched the coordinates and our ship flew to Sacolon in an instant. I brought the ship back from hyperspace. And everything turned normal. We were orbiting Sacolon and our energy charged up in quickly. I brought the ship back to hyperspace and Gemoc plotted the course back to Lumino. I stretched the hologram out so we could look closer at the area around Lumino. The hostile ship was now hovering over the moon base.

"I bet they're trying to destroy the moon base. We need to stop them," Gemoc said.
"Make us intersect with the ship cockpit. When we're ready, charge up the engine for a boost. The sudden antigravity should disintegrate the crew," I said.

Gemoc reached for the control device.

"Don't!" I said. "Touch it and we won't know where we'll end up in hyperspace. Use the holomap instead."
"Sorry. I forgot."

Gemoc touched the ship on the holomap. The coordinates appeared. He adjusted the angle and position to intersect with the ship cockpit and touched the coordinates. The holomap spelled out a warning:

"The selected coordinates will result in impact with object. Proceed?"

I looked at Gemoc and said: "It's OK. Since we're in hyperspace we won't touch the ship."

Gemoc activated the course and the Phoecon intersected with the hostile ship. He charged the engine and plotted a course to Lumino. Then he activated the boost and brought us to orbit around Lumino. The hostile ship stopped moving around on the map.

"I think it's safe now," I said and brought the ship back to conventional space. I activated cockpit translucency and as the map predicted, the hostile ship had stopped moving around and was orbiting Lumino idly.

"You can use the control device now, Gemoc. Take us above the hostile ship and I'll grab on to it using our landing gear claws. We're going to land it in the hangar on the moon base."

Gemoc moved above the hostile ship and I stretched out the claws and grabbed it. Gemoc moved the Phoecon firmly and I dropped the hostile ship off in the hangar. Gemoc landed the Phoecon. The hangar was shut off and filled with air.

We went out of the Phoecon and stood in front of the hostile ship.

"There might be survivors inside. But we need to get into the ship. Let's get Quala and Mecolo to take a look at it," I said.

Dr. Launch spacelog 50 - A new Phoecon

, , ,

Noroom came to my office and said that they made a assembler on Lumino. The next Phoecon will be assembled and tested on Lumino. Gemoc will be the test pilot. But our hyperspace tests will be unmanned since we don't know if the Phoecon can travel through hyperspace unharmed. We wouldn't want the only other existing Plimox with a space-exoskeleton to die in hyperspace.

The plans for the new gravity wave engine are completed. With the addition of the gravity field warper. It amplifies and extends the gravity field made by the gravitator resulting in space being stretched behind and curled up in front of the craft. The curled up space still covers the same distance in space, but is shorter in hyperspace. To counter this problem I made a revolutionary new invention known as the hyperwormhole generator. It makes a wormhole around the curled up space through hyperspace and ends up on the other side of the curled space. This invention is revolutionary because two wormhole portals are needed in conventional wormholes in order to bend space thogether between them. This new wormhole generator bends only one location in space and acts through hyperspace to open the wormhole. But the reason we just can't make the wormhole itself without warping space is, that it's only able to act through very short distances in hyperspace. But it's still perfect for warps.

I'm also including a weapons and shield system. A military engineer came by earlier to give me some plans for energy weapons and a force field shielding system. I've incorporated those into the assembling plans. They use electricity to operate making them ideal in synergy with the Phoecon's ability to self-recharge.

I've also made a gravipack. It uses a optimized version of the gravity wave engine. The user might experience dizzyness and discomfort because of the gravity fields acting upon the body. But it's basically harmless unless operated at too high speeds. So it's limited to the users own gravity tolerance. But in order to make the gravipack functional in environments with high gravity I had to cut shields and weapons from the design, relying solely on three main components, the solar panels, the energy storage and the gravity wave engine without the field warper.

I'm basically done with the designs now. I'm going to send them to the moon assembler ASAP. When it's done, Gemoc will start test flights near Lumino. We'll test hyperspace jump after the other tests, in case the Phoecon is destroyed during the tests.

Dr. Launch spacelog 49 - Debriefing

, , ,

It was time to go to the debriefing meeting. Basically the space program leader Noroom were to hold a brainstorming meeting between my team and the mission control. We discussed the events during launch, after launch, and during the establishment of the moon base. I explained how the Phoecon got caught by gusts but broke free thanks to the autopilot, how navigation in space and landing on Lumino went, how I almost drifted into orbit during my moonwalk and how the establishment of the moon base went including the nanobots using the Phoecon as building materials.

Later we discussed solutions to the issues during the mission. It was decided not to do anything about the launching process from Qeba-9 since we'd be launching spacecraft from the spaceport being built on Lumino at the moment. It was however decided to make a jetpack for moon and spacewalks in order to avoid drifting out in space. A new model of the Phoecon was to be built in a new moon lab as well. The new Phoecon was to have body-stasis for long journeys in space, warping to overcome the speed of light, energy weapons and shields in case of hostile spacecrafts. I also presented my idea for a hyperspace jump engine. It took some explaining but my suggestion was recieved well.

When the meeting neared its end I thought what happened in the break room wasn't going to be mentioned. But then Noroom asked everyone but me, Mecolo, Gemoc and Quala to leave the room.

"Do you know what you're here for?" asked Noroom, looking at me like he expected me to answer. I looked at the others and it didn't seem like they knew. But as I was about to say something, Quala suddenly said:
"It's about what happened in the break room before launch." Noroom looked stunned. Quala was a quite the insightful Plimox. That's probably why she's a technician here, even being able to repair new equipment made by me.

Noroom finally came over the initial shock and continued: "How you figured that out is a mystery to me, because you should have experienced memory loss from that event. When our biolab created Dr. Launch fifteen years ago we didn't create him especially for the space program, although he proved to have excellent cognitive abilities making him perfect for it."
This came as a shock to me. I knew I had special augmentations, but not that I was made in a lab.
In disbelief I asked Noroom: "So you're saying I was some kind of lab experiment?" Noroom looked a bit surprised over my reaction. "That's a very harsh way to put it. You're just as much a Plimox as these three", he said while making a gesture with his hand in the direction of Quala, Mecolo and Gemoc. "I'd rather say that your augmentations were given lots of care by the finest biological laboratory on Qeba-9. We did however try to put as many augmentations in your genes as possible".
I felt more comfortable about it now. Basically I had gone trough the same process as other augmented Plimoxes, with a fertilized egg cell getting gene modifications before it was put back to grow naturally.

So I had to ask: "So that halicunation thingy I had in the break room was one of the augmentations, right?" "Yes. It's called the NIC or nerve impulse controller. It makes brain impulses go crazy. Specifically in the vision and fear centres. It works on all lifeforms with brains that use electronic impulses. They start hallucinating inverted colors and become extremely scared. So what happened before your NIC got activated, Dr. Launch?"
Noroom seemed to want something he knew confirmed.
"Well. I was waiting for the launch and got really nervous. Then suddenly black turned white and white turned black. Everything had the wrong colors. I thought I had become so scared that I halucinated. And then I saw Mecolo, Gemoc and Quala trip over stuff in the room, while running for the door. Mecolo even hit the wall before finding his way to the door."
The others looked quite puzzled. It was almost like they didn't remember. Norom clearified: "Basically, subjects with NIC will trigger it when they're very scared. They'll start to halucinate and emit a special electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field will induce fear and a inverted colors halucination. Another effect of the NIC is memory loss during its effect. The NIC going off is one of the problems we predicted could happened if we let Dr. Launch work with other engineers", Noroom said while playing with his neckwhisker. "But we figured it was worth it because of the possible benefits to Qeba-9".

"So basically, you need us to keep quiet about this", Gemoc said in a monotonous tone suggesting he knew the routine that was coming. Gemoc really hated that he had to agree to the lab security clearance for some reason. Noroom was quick to answer: "If society found out we could have some of them demanding this augmentation for their children. And when there's demand there's service. And it's really not something we want random plimoxes to be able to do." Noroom had to have long discussions with Gemoc when he was hired to make him agree to the lab security clearance. "Basically, your current security clearance allow you to handle information used in the space engineering projects you've been working on. However, information about Dr. Launch' special augmentations require top level security clearance."
Noroom transmitted the agreements and each of us played them back. Gemoc was clearly not happy but he finally submitted the agreement back as well.
"This is so you can keep working with Dr. Launch. And I might have some new work for you later that require this clearance. This concludes this meeting. You can go back to work. I'm looking forward to our work in the future."

Gemox went to to train in the flight simulator, Mecolo to work on the Phoecon computer systems, and Quala went to do maintenance on the lab after our work before the last launch. I went to work on the new plans for the Phoecon.

Dr. Launch spacelog 48 - Moon base

, , ,

I'm alive! Sorry for keeping you in suspense all this time. The launch went well. The catapult was quite a rush and it worked elegantly. I steered clear of the worst surface winds but the Phoecon was caught by turbulence for over a minute. It was a bit scary but the autopilot managed to pull the ship loose. As I reached the upper levels of the atmosphere the winds declined and the yellow-brown atmosphere turned into black with stars and galactic gases in the background. It was way more beautiful than I had ever imagined. And below me, the violent yellow-brown Qeba-9 with its winds. As gravity released its grip on my body i could feel its strain disappear and I felt free. This was the element I was made for.

And above me, my mission, Lumino, covered in the soft glow of our star, Sacolon. In microgravity, the gravity wave engines worked without anything preventing them so the Phoecon could achieve immense speeds out here. As a matter of fact, I had to limit the throttle or else I wouldn't be able to stop above Lumino. Even so, it took only a few seconds to reach Lumino. I flew over the surface a little, before landing in the area planned for the moon base. I went out of the ship. And walked around the moon a bit. Even without any space suit, I felt fine. The vaccum felt wierd, and the cold too. But my exoskeleton was entirely tight, and insulating so I experienced no problems with it. However, I almost went into orbit as I was going back to the Phoecon to get the wormhole generator. I walked a little too quickly and lost contact with the ground. Luckily I hit the Phoecon which stopped me and I landed below it.

I got the wormhole generator out of the Phoecon and attached it to the surface. I messaged back to the control center on the ground that the generator was attached and ready. And they started the generator via radio waves. Four metallic arms stretched out and grabbed eachother at the top, so they formed two circles. They started rotating quickly and I could see space stretch in the middle of the now rotating circles. As the space between the arms stretched even more, I could see the portal cave on the other side and a puff of dust coming out as the vacuum of space pulled the air out of the cave. The cave itself was air tight and the only way in or out was through an airlock. This was to make sure the atmosphere on Qeba-9 wouldn't be sucked out on Lumino and drift out in space. As I walked around the portal I could see the portal cave on the other side from different angles. The wormhole itself was a perfect orb. The wormhole grew bigger until it finally surrounded the portal arms. The wormhole was open.

I could see the airlock on the other side open. And a grey mist come out of it. It was the nanobots meant to build the moon base. They came through the wormhole and spread around the area. As the nanobots spread, the mist became thiner until it became invisible. But the moon surface around me started sinking as the nanobots picked up materials from it. Even the Phoecon started disappearing. The bots were programmed to use parts of the Phoecon and the moon to make the moon base. They were however programmed to not touch any organic materials, such as me. With the Phoecon gone, the plan was to use the portal back. I could see a dome starting to take shape around me. Complete with an airlock. As the dome was completed it was filled with air from Qeba-9 and started heating up. Then the control center messaged that I could pass through the portal. While the wormhole had spinning arms inside it, I wasn't going to touch them since the surface of the wormhole was around them. As I passed through the wormhole, the moon base dome was replaced by the portal cave walls. And I could see the dome through the wormhole behind me.

They closed the portal and the wormhole inside snapped together and disappeared. The arms stopped spinning. The airlock opened and I went through. And got met by my ecstatic team and the control center crew. We had completed the mission and Qeba-9's space age had started. I got checked by a medic and had no injuries and no negative effects from being in the vacuum of space. I finally had some spare time before the debriefing meeting a few hours later. I used it to relax and get my thoughts together. During my rest I even came up with an idea. A hyperspace jump engine. Hyperspace is kind of a four dimensional space surrounding our three dimensions. Wormholes are one phenomenon that acts out in hyperspace as well. It bends space in hyperspace to make the illusion that the other side of the wormhole is closer than it really is. My idea is a engine that sort of jumps out in hyperspace. Since the physical laws of space don't apply in hyperspace, you can travel faster than the speed of light there. Still the gravity wave engine will work fine because gravity can escape space and act out in hyperspace just the same.

Well. I'll rest some more now, then I'm going for the debriefing meeting. I bet I'll have to answer a few questions about what happened in the break room before launch. When I'm done with that I'll start working on the hyperspace jump engine.

Dr. Launch spacelog 47 - Launch nerves

, , ,

We presented our results for the global space program management, and they approved launch and opening of a wormhole portal on Lumino. A permanent moon base will also be established, built by nanobots which will build the base instantly after the portal is opened. There are also plans to build a spaceport later on. The Qeba-9 trade organisation are really anxious to start intergalactic trade since it will stimulate our economy plenty. Sadly, this might mean the end of my time as the top player of Qeba-9's space engineering. But I'm still going to be Qeba-9's first space traveler. I've been selected to pilot the Phoecon because of the special properties of my body.

As I've said earlier I'm an augmented plimox. Gene augmentation is quite common here on Qeba-9, and not only my brain was augmented. My body has a special flexible exoskeleton that preserves inside pressure in the vacuum of space. My limbs are thin in order to keep my body weight down. Still I'm able to stay upright on Qeba-9 due to a improved type of muscle fibre in my body. Unlike regular plimox, my eye size is four times larger than usual. This will make flight in space much easier to me. I can also extract energy to survive from light alone.

The launch cave has been made ready. We're going to launch the Phoecon with a huge catapult. This is in order to pass the surface gusts which can catch the Phoecon and smash it into the ground. Higher in the atmosphere, being caught by a gust isn't too severe since the autopilot will make sure the craft keeps elevating. While I'm capable of building a catapult able to launch the Phoecon into orbit, it would smash me inside the Phoecon during launch. I'm able to whitstand fifteen times the gravity of Qeba-9 without being hurt. So the catapult was built with this in mind. We mounted the Phoecon in the catapult and mounted the wormhole generator inside, which was specially built to be lightweight and shock resistant.

I'm ready for launch now and I'm sitting here in this break room, recording this log, waiting for launch. The launch could go seriously wrong in every way. The catapult could fail and smash me before I leave the cave, the gusts of the surface could catch the craft and leave me stranded on the surface to starve to death. The engines could fail and I could suffer the same fate. That's just a fraction of the ways this could go wrong. I was so nervous the room colors turned inverted earlier. I thought it was a hallucination until everyone else in the room freaked out and ran off. I have no idea why it happened, but it must be related to the special properties of my brain.

Well. There's my signal. I have to go now. If this is my last log, it means things went horribly wrong during launch. Goodbye until the next time, if there's going to be one.

Dr. Launch spacelog 46 - Lab tests

, , ,

Since the last time I've completed the new plans for the gravity wave engine. The Phoecon uses three of them actually, in order to balance the almost circular, half-moon shaped hull. These three engines generate gravity waves, or actually ripples in space-time. These will propel the hull away from the direction they're facing. My new plans made the power output more efficient, and fine-tuned the gravitator. My expectations for the new engine was 120% efficiency.

We made three new engines in our atomic assembler and fit them into their engine compartments in the hull. Our test lab was built besides a large enough cave for test flights. This was the first time we had any chance of a proper test flight inside the cave. Previous versions of the engine didn't even lift the hull at all. Gemoc, our test pilot would be the first one to actually fly a craft on Qeba-9. Sadly, we didn't take into account that balancing the ship would be like balancing on top of a ball. Gemoc elevated the craft gently, but as he tried to move the craft, it went out of balance and crash landed. Luckily the shock absorbant cabin kept Gemoc safe.

Seems like the ship could handle the impact quite well. After all, it's designed to absorb any damage its launch from Qeba-9 could expose it to. But we need a flight assist program, so the pilot can focus on actually flying the ship. I handed the task of writing the ship flight assist program to Mecolo, our main system programmer. The result was a program that handled the balancing of the ship, while the pilot could just move the control device to control the flight.

Despite his earlier ordeal, Gemoc was determined to fly the ship properly. A little nevous he put the ship into hover, then drifted around a bit. He tried flying around in the cave and was quite pleased with the upgrades. He tried landing as well. The landing gear are two rather thin feet, almost like a biped lifeform, concealed inside the hull during flight. During landing they come out and absorb shock and balance the hull. It works well. Our lab tests were successful.

The team kept nagging that they wanted to try flying the Phoecon. I told them that we're obligated to folow the construction schedule. Well. I snuck into the test cave and snagged myself a try. The Phoecon was a dream to fly. All I had to do was to move a wireless controller around with my hand and the ship responded the same way. Mecolo's program was great. It would be cynical of me to deny the team a go.

Our lab tests were successfull. And we also got to see how well the hull could resist damage. And the team really gave the craft a beating with their careless flying. Our lab tests exceeded my predictions for the new engine with 124% efficiency. Now we're going to ready the launch cave, and all we'll need now is the green light from the global space program management. I can't wait.
