Super Mario Galaxy brings video game entertainment to new levels

, , , ...

Update: This post was featured in N + and N + posted their own review. Go to the bottom of this post for more information.

The 16th of November 2007, Super Mario Galaxy for Wii achieved a higher average rating from websites with video game reviews than The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Super Mairo Galaxy had 97.9%, against The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's 97.5%. And it was well deserved.

After playing Super Mario Galaxy for a while, I'm in total awe. Everything is just so awesome about it. The gameplay is the richest I've ever experienced. Ideas from every era of Super Mario are mixed with new ideas, some never seen before in a game. Among the news are small planets, which have interesting gravity effects. You can actually orbit around some planets with a long jump. Some other news are the way you're launched from launch stars to visit new areas and planets, and things you can ride, such as koopa shells and manta rays and rolling orbs. Among the powerups; the fire flower and the rainbow star (invincibillity) return. You can also fly in this game with the bee mushroom.

The visuals in this game are absolutely stunning and a feast for the eyes. The 3D models are enhanced with beautiful effects. It doesn't matter if the Wii doesn't pack the most graphics power. The visuals of Super Mario Galaxy makes it clear that it's one of the big boys in terms of game graphics on consoles today.

Listen to more of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack here.

The soundtrack is so fantastic it's hard to describe it. It's incredibly rich. You'll find both new melodies and melodies you love from previous games. They're beautifully arranged with their own orchestra, or some times exciting electronica. The soundtrack change with new areas or events, sparking stronger feelings. This is the first game I've played with music that make the game more entertaining.

Super Mario Galaxy is everything you know from previous Mario games and more. It's a long-lasting, entertaining experience. It's memorable and replayable. This game will be remembered as the highlight of gaming in this decade. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excite Truck and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption together with software like The Internet Channel made the Wii much more than worth it. With the addition of Super Mario Galaxy to the Wii game catalouge, I'd say not owning a Wii and one or more of these games is a shame. Because you're missing out on some the best entertainment you can experience today.

Steppo - Silent Hill 4: The Room - Room of Angel - Lullabass (Vocal Mix)

Steppo is a friend of mine from outside Opera Community. Apart from being a great friend, he also makes awesome music. Steppo both remixes and makes new music. The song you can hear by clicking the play button is just one of many good songs from him (check out the links in the bottom of this article). If you like Trance, you're going to love this song.

This song is a remix of a song in Silent Hill 4: The Room.
Here's a video featuring the original song with video clips from the Silent Hill movie.

And here are the lyrics to go with the video. Thanks to Animelyrics.com for making it available on the web.

Lullaby

Theme Song
Akira Yamaoka

Verse:1
You lie silent there before me
Your tears may be nothing to me
The wind howling out the window
The love you never gave I give to you
really don't desserve it
but now there's nothing you can do
So sleep in your only memory
How mere my dearest mother

Verse:2
Hears a lullaby to close your eyes
(goodbye)
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
(oh no)
Hears a lullaby to close your eyes

(goodbye) x4

Verse:3
So insignifigant, sleeping dorment deep inside of me
Are you hiding the way lost, under the sewers
Maybe flying high in the clouds
Perhaps your happy without me
So many seeds have been stolen for you, and who could sprout up so visidly if I had died, I would have never felt sad at all
You will not hear me say I'm sorry
Where is the light, wonder if it's weeping somewhere

Verse:4
Hear's a lullaby to close your eyes
(goodbye)
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
(oh no)
Hear's a lullaby to close your eyes
(goodbye)

Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
(goodbye) Repeat x2

It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry
(oh no)
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
(Goodbye)x3

Verse:2 Repeat x2

K-FED: Dancing with Fire

This is the best flash game I've played in a while. It's a first person fighting game made by the very skilled founder of Newgrounds, Tom Fulp. Artwork by Jeff Bandelin. Stamper also helped making this game. It's a point-and-click game where you move your mouse in a direction and click to do different moves.

The PSP crushes the DS. Oh really?

, , , ...

I believe you all have noticed the fight between Nintendo DS and PSP. Most speculations implied that the PSP would crush DS. So if you still believe this, take a look at this:

Sony didn't share the PSP sales with the public. But according to these numbers both the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP are very close in the market share. While I may only speculate about this at the moment, I believe that Nintendo DS is the leader.

So why did people choose Nintendo DS? Is half of the world stupid? No.

I chose Nintendo DS and I know I'm not stupid. While Nintendo DS is cheaper than Sony PSP I have several other reasons to choose Nintendo DS. It's more fun to sum them all up.
Nintendo DS is nothing less than brilliant. While not having the most powerful graphics it makes up for that with the nice price tag. The two screens where the bottom one works as a touch screen may trigger many amazing game concepts. And it can play your Gameboy Advance games as well. The GBA slot also works as a kind of expansion bay. You can get almost anything for it.
Lately I've seen a lot of signs of the DS growing up. It may go from being the "little brother" of PSP to become something much greater. A digital TV tuner card has been announced for the DS. The browser that we all love so much, Opera, is coming for the DS. Screw the PSP browser P: . We may see several other expansions for the DS in a not so distant future that may allow the DS to become incredibly much more powerful than the PSP in terms of functionality. However, these expansions will probably not be built in to the DS. You have to buy them separately on cards and cartridges. This may be a plus though since you can purchase the expansions you want and you don’t get the functions you don’t want.
Nintendo DS makes me look forward to Nintendo (codenamed) Revolution. And I can't wait to see how these two work together.

So then you might think I'm making fun of those who chose PSP, then? Nope. I'm making fun of those who say that the PSP will crush the DS. I'm not saying that you should stay away from PSP.

So why PSP? PSP is a very powerful multimedia device. It's more beautiful than the DS. PSP features better graphics than the DS, built-in multimedia playback and a built-in browser. (The upcoming Opera for DS will be better than the PSP browser). You can get movies on UMD discs so you can enjoy them wherever you want. The PSP is for the hardcore gamer and the technology freak. And for those who wants something flashy to show off to their friends. The PSP is the more expensive of these two.

If you’re still a firm believer that PSP will crush the DS, there’s something horribly wrong with you. It’s all a matter of what you’re looking for. Instead of buying PSP because people say it’s the most awesome, you should think about it instead. PSP or DS? Find out which is better for you. Don’t be stupid.

I chose the DS for my own reasons. I’ve provided some links for you, now go educate yourself and choose your favourite:

Thrustmaster Dual Trigger Gamepad 2in1 Gamepad, for PC & Playstaion 2

, , , ...

I bought this gamepad after deciding that I need some gaming equipment. Now I didn't want to empty my wallet completely, and I wanted a gamepad that's good enough. So after browsing komplett.no I chose this gamepad. This one is very cheap. It's so cheap that I couldn't believe it. It costs 149 Norwegian Kroners. Or 22.42 US dollars acording to Google.

Overview:
PC and PS2 compatible.
Allmost the same buttons as on a PS2 controller.
XBox like trigger buttons for driving games and first person shooters.
Very good analog sticks.
Button remapping.
Turbo function.

I went to pick up the package a few days later and opened the package. I did allready have some NES, SNES, GBA and N64 games ready on my PC (tsk, tsk). I'm not going to rate any emulators, but I wish that atleast nemu were a bit more compatible with the controller, or vice versa. I'm not good on configuring nemu but nemu should have been better on utillitizing all the axises and the POV hat/D-pad.

The controller had a good amount of buttons. The layout is very close to that on a DualShock PlayStation 2 controller. And it can be used both for the PC and the PlayStation 1 and 2. I give the controller plus for those two extra trigger buttons. To bad they serve the same function as the right analog sticks UP/DOWN axis.

The controller is allmost as comfortable as the DualShock but it has a hard edge where I put my ring finger. Depending on how I use the controller, I have to shift my grip to get the control I want. Some people might get cramps faster than they do with the standard PS2 controller. But if you get a cramp, it's because you play to much.

I love the resposiveness of this controller. The analog sticks are comfortably loose. They give you as much controll over your games as many other controllers. The thumb controlled buttons on your right hand are close to perfection. The triggers on this controller are as comfortably loose as the analog sticks. But the D-pad/POV hat is a bit worse in some cases and some people have problems moving it diagonally. The shoulder buttons are not as comfortable as on the DualShock. The lower shoulder buttons are too small. And I repeat that you have to hold it in a certain way to avoid cramping.

Now I haven't explored all the functions yet but still I feel like this is an awesome controller. You can remap buttons (maybe this will make nemu easier to use for me). And there's a turbo function. It has a lot of buttons. I don't miss anything on this controller. Cheers to thrustmaster for making such a good controller. I wish it was a bit more comfortable though.

[Edited in:]
I got the chance to play SSX On Tour on PlayStation 2 with this controller lately. Somehow it feels a little slower than the original controller. But it's allmost as good as the PS2 controller if you get used to it.
