How Google Latitude helped me find my phone

, , , ...

I drive a scooter. I have driven a scooter since I was 16, and drive as fast as I can, all the time. As a result I have lost keys, memory sticks and now, my cell phone. A bloody expensive, Samsung Omnia HD, which cost me approximately €739.82.

I was done at work late in the evening, and went home. So I twisted the throttle and jumped over bumps in the road and all. Over a path, and through a parking lot. When I got home, I discovered that I had lost my cell phone. I had no idea where my cell was located.

So I took the wheels hold and drove back to work. It was dark and I used the light on my scooter to look for my cell phone on the road. I locked myself in to the work building and searched for my phone, without any luck. So I called my mother by the phone at work and asked her to call my cell phone while I drove home. I couldn't find it.

But all hope was not lost. I knew my phone had GPS. But not only that. Google Maps was running on my phone with Latitude. A service where you can show your friends where you are. It is useful for friends, but I never imagined it would be useful for me. Because I can actually tell where my phone is located via Google Latitude on the Internet. I turned on my computer and found out that my phone was located near the path I drove on. So I asked my mother to call the phone and jumped on my bike.

I parked in the parking lot and walked up the trail while searching with a flashlight. As I stood in the middle of the trail, I stopped. I could hear my ringtone in the distance. I continued forward, and could hear my ringtone more clearly. When I came to the crosswalk on the main road I saw it. Lying by the roadside. I answered my mother's call and said I found it. Back home I saw that my phone had some scratches. Oh well. Better than losing the €739.82 I bought it for.

Google Maps runs on almost all phones, and Google Latitude works even if you do not have GPS on your phone. You can use it to see where your friends are on Google's Latitude, or check where your phone is in the world, like I did.

Member of the Week! Woohoo!

Woohoo! After almost four years and lots of devotion, and thanks to everything I've shared with all of you, I've been crowned Member of the Week for the first time. But this would never have happened if I wasn't inspired by my friends and all the kind members of the community.

This one's for you!

Done with my first service for the Norwegian Army

, , , ...

After almost twelve months, I'm done with my first time service in the Norwegian army. This means I'll go back from being a soldier to being a civilian this Friday. I'm leaving behind a year full of hard challenges, hard work, but more importantly good experiences, good memories and good friends. I'm leaving the Norwegian signal battalion with more than when I entered, both mentally, physically and in hand luggage? :left:

During this year I've received praise for being someone who gives everything, achieves a lot, takes responsibility and goes where others don't. This is despite seriously bad odds when I entered in January this year. My abilities have brought me glory and fame, and among my most special achievements are the Approved Signalist medal and being the creator of the Signal Battalion's new slogan; "Without us, you'll just stand there". This is of course true. This battallion connects the Norwegian military together, and if I can't deliver together with my fellow soldiers, each department's headquarters are going to be full of people standing there, looking emptily into the air.

So this week, I'm no longer only the army's but will belong to my friends and family as a civilian. I'm leaving the army with a bit of sadness because I have to leave my new friends, and leave a fantastically rewarding lifestyle, but mostly, I'm leaving with happyness. I'll be able to spend more time on friends, and family, and maybe produce more content for you, whom are reading this. But look out, I might enter the army again sooner or later for more education. I'm finishing this article with one of the best pictures I've taken during my service in the fantastically beautiful but awefully cold northern Norway.

My blog is back! But no links section :(

, , , ...

Those server monkeys have been up to no good for several days. Due to a bug in the feed reader in the links section, my blog has been down. It's finally back thanks to something simple I didn't think about. :hat:

In place of my blog and different sections, people saw a 500 server error. This is due to the fact that I added two feeds from spurl.net. Spurl is a bookmarking service. But development has been abandoned and importing of bookmarks doesn't work. So if you have a large bookmark selection, don't bother signing up.

I added the feeds so I could let people could see which sites I visit the most, which sites I bookmark and my recently visited sites. You can still see those sites in my published bookmarks.

So how did I fix it? I figured out that the error occured because the links module is loaded on almost all my site sections. But I didn't think there was something I could do with it. Well. I solved the problem by doing something as simple as deactivating my links in my account sidebar section.

So the links module is only loaded in my links section which leads to a 500 server error. But I would still like to see the bug fixed, so I can share my favorite sites with my faithful readers.

Expect some new blog posts about my recent discoveries on the web soon. Oh and it was me that spanked that monkey monkey for misbehaving. :D

A pleasant surprise from Opera

, , , ...

The package I was expecting from Opera Software arrived yesterday. But I didn't post about it before today. In it there was a gray Sidorova Opera t-shirt. Now I'll get a chance to promote Opera while looking cool (cardboard billboards aren't exactly fashionable :D ).
I also got an Opera Powered™ wrist strap, which I'll attach to my Opera Mini powered cellphone, an Opera Software pen, which will make my hand writing fast as Opera. And I got an I  Opera pin which will find its home on my jacket, and last but not least, a card written by EspenAO saying:

Hi Knut!
Here's a free t-shirt as promised
Thank's for supporting Opera and My Opera!
Best,
Espen A.

I wonder if Espen was a dentist or doctor in his previous life. :left:
I'm joking. Thanks for everything, including the card. Now I'm Opera Powered and I can show the world that I'm proud of it with style :D .

IMAGE1: View of Gudbrandsdalen near the peak of Hafjell.

I went on a trip to Hafjell Ski Resort with my work yesterday. Key card and Snowblade rental was totally free!

I had a great day. And I took a lot of photos and recorded a few videos. Download the video I put together here:

What a great day that was. My muscles still ache. Oww. :worried:

My favorite programs

, , , ...

I love software. And of course I have lots of it installed. So I thought I'd tell you about my favorite software. And these are programs you don't have to pay a dime for.

The programs

Opera
I suppose Opera Community members know Opera. But my other readers might not. Allow me to clarify this. Opera is a web browser from the Norwegian company Opera Software ASA. Opera have been free and without ads since version 8.5 thanks to a search field from Google. Opera and Google share the revenue from searches done with this search field. When I'm writing this, Opera is in version 9.1.

Opera aims to be an Internet Suite with lots of functions while still being fast. Opera is faster, safer and arguably the best browser. Among the newer features are fraud protection, BitTorrent downloading, custom search engine, and content blocker, preferences for individual sites, Widgets and vast amounts of other features. But you should really make your own choice when it comes to your browser. You might want to try Firefox too.Download...

Picasa2
Picasa was acquired by Google in 2004 and released for free. Picasa can be used to organize and edit your photos and images. You can also import photos from cameras and memory cards.

Once installed, you can set Picasa to scan your computer for photos and videos and they'll show up in Picasa. Then you'll be able to search for your photos and videos and view or edit them in a matter of seconds.

Picasa is powerful yet simple. The main features are organization, editing, sharing, printing, backing up photos, and creation of fun stuff with your photos. All made simple and lightning fast. Picasa really is picture simplicity.

Picasa is available free for users of Windows and GNU/Linux. Google are interested in providing a Mac version but there's none available at this moment. Download...

CitrixWire
Whaaat? Is that a typo? No it's not. Basically CitrixWire is a barely changed version of LimeWire Pro with a green skin for free. I suspect that it's a hacked version of LimeWire. There's also an open version of LimeWire called FrostWire.

So what is Lime/Frost/CitrixWire? It's a Gnutella file sharing program for multiple platforms. It's easy and fast to search for and download all kinds of multimedia and share your files with this program. And unlike a lot of other file sharing programs, this one doesn't install any additional software on your system without your consent. Download...

µTorrent
µTorrent is also a file sharing program. But unlike CitrixWire, this one is for downloading using BitTorrent. Unlike gnutella, you use your web browser to download torrent files and open them in a BitTorrent program. Then this program downloads the file and shares it with others at the same time.

µTorrent aims to be a full-featured BitTorrent client while still being small and fast. The code is fast and portable. Basically it's platform independent. Using it in Wine for Linux should be no problem. In my opinion, it's the best BitTorrent client in existence. µTorrent was acquired by BitTorrent Inc. in 2006. BitTorrent Inc hopes to bring µTorrent to embedded systems like TV-s and cell phones too.Download...

MyPhoneExplorer
This program for Sony Ericsson phones come from an independent developer. The core features are actually coded by only one person. I'm amazed that one person can make such an advanced program.

Yeah yeah, but what is it? I'll tell you. You can use a lot of your phone's features with MyPhoneExplorer. It's a desktop interface for the phone's built-in organizer. And it's easier to use than Outlook. It's a contact manager for your phone, call manager, sms program, file explorer and you can monitor your phone status with it. You can also search an Internet phone book for numbers and names. The program is translated to lots of languages thanks to the efforts of many people from all around the world. Download...

How to contact me

, , , ...

During my time online I've seen people contact me in the strangest ways. Sometimes resulting in me getting mad at them or ignoring them. So to help sort out confusion I'm going to explain how to contact me. You'll have to respect that I'm not allways by my computer to respond. If I don't respond then try again later.
When you contact me, please introduce yourself and tell me as much as possible about how you found me and why you want to contact me. If you dont have much reason for contacting me but just want to chat, then say so. If you go on jumping right in front of me and scream "Hiiiiiiiiiii!!!!1!!" I might get mad at you.

Blog comments
Use this method if you have feedback to any of the posts in my blog. Comment in the post and no other posts. If you have feedback to my blog in general, comment this post. You don't even have to introduce yourself for this.

Private Messages
Use this method of contact if you want to contact me regarding anything related to Opera Community. You may also use this as a general way of contacting me. You need to sign up at Opera Community to send me a private message. Go to my about and click 'Send a message'. I may not be able to respond right away so then you may prefer another way of contact. Read on...

IRC
Make sure you have a IRC client (f.ex.: Opera) installed on your system and go to the channel #drlaunch at OperaNet and talk in the channel. If you're going to send me a private message you'll better have a really good reason or I might get mad at you. If you have anything (really) private then say in the channel that you need to talk in private, then send me a private message. Remember to tell me that you found me in #drlaunch. Don't get surprised if I don't respond since I'm not always at my computer.

Email
If you simply just want to contact me in person, send an email to drlaunch$gmail¤com (antispam: change '$'into '@' and '¤' into '.' ). I may not be able to respond right away so you may want to chat with me using an instant messenger. Remember to tell me as much as possible about how you found me and why you're contacting me. To make things easier for me, ask me to add you in an email. I'll list my instant messaging programs in order of which I prefer...

Google Talk
If you want to IM me I'd prefer if you used Google Talk. I even suggest that you install this program instead of using one of your current instant messengers. Google Talk supports IM standards and can be connected to using some other IM programs. Sign up yourself or ask me to invite you to Gmail so we can chat with Google Talk. Please give me as much information as possible about how you found me and why you're contacting me. My ID is: ' drlaunch$gmail¤com ' (antispam: change '$'into '@' and '¤' into '.' )

Skype
The good sister of MSN Messenger. Skype has a better call function and the XP version supports video calls. Skype is also a fully functional IM program. Before making calls to me I suggest that you send me a message in text form. Introduce yourself and say how you found me and why you're contacting me. My ID is ' Doctor_Launch '.

MSN Messenger
I've seen the light so I've left MSN. Even though it's the most used IM program I suggest that you use Google Talk instead.

Other ways of contact may become a little too private for me. If you plan to call me on the phone or send a letter through postal mail, please ask me in private to send you this information.

And remember to always introduce yourself and say how you found me and why you're contacting me.
