I Fell from the Moon

Don't worry ma'am. I'm from cyberspace.

My Omnia HD arrived

, , ,

My Omnia HD arrived by mail today. So far so good. But its taking some time getting used to, since the touch version of Symbian S60 is not as user friendly as other touch alternatives out there. Expect some more coverage when I've tried the phone a bit more.

Have Fun!! Hope to hear how the device is...and perhaps how it would compare to Xperia X1

"Symbian S60 is not as user friendly as other touch alternatives out there" - um, clarify what ones, please

While some may say the capacitance ones like iphone are sensitive, nice... the resistive ones like my 5800 seem perfectly ok....

The problem with the capacitive ones is that you cannot use *anything* (pen cap, pencil, etc) on the display - please do tell if you can do so...

EG, if you want to see the whole webpage, and click the *tiny* link, is this possible?? using the stylus on 5800 is no problem for this... (and ignore those who have not upgraded it to the latest, that solves all the problems they moan about!!)

Capacitive touchscreen has both ups and downs so far for me. I'm already considering trading for a couple of 5800s once this period is up.

S60 5th edition is just a stop gap so it's no surprise that it doesn't live up to the promise laid out by other Touch UIs. Still, the OS is mostly solid enough to compensate for that.

Any widget developers in the house want to create an app launcher widget for me?

drlaunch 24. July 2009, 22:40

s60 5th feels like they taken s60 3rd edition, shuffled a few menu items around, and adapted it for a touch screen. Of course it's not going to be as user friendly as Android or iPhone.

At least I'm not missing resistive screens while using it because the screen is more than large enough. Hand writing recognition feels odd on the phone, but it doesn't matter because of the software keyboards on the phone. And the capacitive screen makes using the phone a bit more snappy.

It's a tough little beasty too. Threw mine across the room yesterday and it didn't even get scratched.

The 'problem' with the 5800 is that the gallery seems to be an afterthought, just to catch iphone mania.... ???

If like me you upgraded from the 6680, where all your pics are carefully sorted into folders, so that the pics you show to your mum of your hols are kept safely separate from you NSFW drunken pics and movies....

NOT SO on 5800... :frown: :frown: not only that, but **every** pic and vid is displayed... meaning that the pic you use for wallpaper on the phone memory, is displayed right next to the one on the memory card you copied it from!!!

yes, I know there is a 'sort by'' option.. but I cannot see any way to 'fix' this view... there is a 'file viewer, yes, but you then have to press 'back' and select the next file, unlike 6680, where just 'right arrow' did the job...
Strangely enough, if you open the viewer from the file manager, you *cannot* just 'slide left and right' as you do in the gallery... ??

I am seriously thinking of the samsung s60v5 phones, they have added much more phone memory, much better gallery, etc, etc... the omnia HD is £500 off contract, and O2 <yuck> have only just got it, so it will be a while until it is affordable.. do you think the cheaper pixon is good enough??

Trying to find a program for V5 is not easy - and the few I find are either badly labeled so dont work, or really badly made... and that even includes nokia, sadly enough....

The 5800 is a very nice phone yes, if you dont care that much for pics & vids, but just want internet, wifi, PDA, load up your albums & coverart....

illiad 25. July 2009, 16:21

@ drlaunch : do you have a stylus that works with the capacitive screen? (I have only tried one or two in a shop, did not work with my pencap.. )

Also, I was wondering how various 'screen covers' would hinder the touch on capacitive?? (not the thin stick on type, the quite thick one that Krussel uses on it's cases..)

As I said, the 5800 screen seems perfectly good to me - though I guess I am not that fast a typist, unless it goes bad after months of use??? what do you think?

drlaunch 25. July 2009, 17:41

The file management and viewing options on s60 5th aren't exactly good. But I've found it easiest to switch to folder sorting in the media browser each time.

There are carrying cases with screen covers that work fine with the iPhone's capacive screen. And the screen cover in the Omnia HD box works well with the capacitive screen. So if you can find a case that fits the Omnia HD it should work fine with the capacitive screen. That is if you can find one.

The gallery used in the numbered S60 Nokia phones is the standard S60 gallery. The N-series however has a different one where everything is shown. It's been like that since before the iPhone was even heard of, and that's the gallery that found it's way into the 5800. The Beta Labs have alternate gallery applications in, all of which will eventually be worked into the basic gallery software for Symbian.

Furie 25. July 2009, 22:02

Doc, look up an application called Xplore for a decent file management alternative with plenty of power.
