, , ,

There is much evidence against being a big dairy consumer and dealing with acne. I could quote dermatologists who claim there is no relation between diet and acne. Those of us who suffer from acne however have often discovered there is definitely a relationship between the diet and clear skin. There are many countries that are acne-free, countries without the big emphasis on junk food and pasteurized dairy products. This makes it difficult to consider dermatologists who refuse to consider the diet theory, knowing they will also not profit if focusing on the client's dietary intake. There are of course very ethical and bright dermatologists who have taken the high road, and considered other alternative measures rather than maintaining only what they have learned at school.

Avoiding dairy is a recommended course, but I would suggest one exception, and that is keeping yogurt in your daily diet. There is so much goodness in the better quality yogurts, with bacterial culture alive and well and fighting those many infections, promoting healthy intestinal tracts and more. You can learn to make your own, which is easy and with very little preparation. Of course, this recommendation may not work for you and you may find eliminating dairy completely is the best option.

Soy products can be replacements for dairy, but I would recommend going with organic soy replacements and not over-consuming the regular soy products you find at the grocery store, which are from soy raised with an abundance of chemicals none of us need when dealing with acne.

Try going without dairy for six months, which will help keep pores from gaining new plugs and help you gain some ground in this fight.

Through the teen years and into your early twenties, keep dairy intake minimal or completely eliminate when possible. You can gradually add it in if you wish as you become older, but try not to get into the habit of having Ben and Jerry's every day. Ice cream is a menace for your skin but fortunately there are many alternatives in the stores that you will help you win that battle. You will probably lose weight also.

To replace the calcium from dairy, dont fret too much over this, since there are many countries who have fabulous bones and are not force-fed dairy each day. You should have a healthy diet with calcium products, vitamin D both from supplements and sunshine, and dont forget that cola and other caffeine products can leach the calcium out of your body, so replace that calcium if you tend to overindulge some time in those products.

As calcium levels in our body are a concern when dairy is eliminated, realize that there are many other foods with sufficient calcium to make this task easy for us. Consider the following: one cup over plain low-fat yogurt has 415 mg, roasted almonds have 93 mg per 1/4 cup, white beans have 120 mg per 3/4 cup, chickpeas have 58 mg per 3/4 cup, instant oats, have 165 mg per package, calcium fortified juices vary but can have 165 mg for a half cup, while regular orange juice has 52 mg per half cup, broccoli has up to 180 mg per cup, tofu has 145 mg per 4 ounces, kale has 100 mg per half cup, and one medium egg has 55 mg. Salmon, though rich in calcium, should probably be avoided as it causes skin problems for those already suffering from acne. Remember that acne products applied topically are not the only concern. What we ingest is mirrored on our skin.

You may be an avid dairy consumer and have great skin now. Congratulations and enjoy your Ben and Jerrys for those of us who cannot yet.
