Opera on top of Africa

, ,

For something none web related, a group of Opera employees (and three others) are attempting to conqueror the highest summit in Africa. I'll be in the party, along with Fred, Frode, Thomas, Mathieu, Tami, Helen Jørgen and Bjorn. We'll trek up Kilimanjaro (Opera Mini in hand) before heading out on Safari and then spend the remaining days relaxing in Zanzibar. Check out our progress on the Kilimanjaro '07 blog.

One of the things that is fascinating about Africa from a Opera perspective is that many people don't have computers, so their main, and often only way of accessing the web is via their mobile phones. These are often not expensive smart phones either, so Opera Mini is an ideal tool to connect and help educate large parts of Africa. Imagine sites like Wikipedia being available to students that don't have access to paper based encyclopaedias or class room PCs. Indeed, some of the countries where Opera Mini is used the most are in Africa. South Africa being one example. Products like Opera Mini could bring a whole new revolution and opportunities to people in the developing world.

Alright! Best of luck to u guys. This is wht we call affirmative action! But isn't web access on mobile phones limited in Africa? or am I wrong abt tht statistic...hopefully Negroponte's cheap laptops will also make the push for better education there.
Again, Best of luck in ur endeavours.

Well more like Kilimanjaro and Zandibar was, but we've been very busy over the last week with a number of developments. Look for updates soon
