Open the Web branding

, ,

One of the things I've been meaning to do for a long time is to update the Open the Web web page, which is now hopelessly out of date (and also includes that big logo and American English). We've been too busy recently helping to fix other people's sites to work on our own.

The developer relations team at Opera (which currently consists of OtW, Dev Opera and Opera Labs) are sponsoring the upcoming Web Directions North conference in Vancouver. This gave us the perfect opportunity to get our creative juices flowing, as we needed to produce a program advert and some conference bag swag. The advert had to be delivered to Dave Shea today, and I won't give away the design just yet, but I think Truls (Lead Web Designer at Opera) did a fantastic job.

As a small detail of the ad design, we revived a logo concept that Micci worked on when we were doing concepts for the Open the Web web site. The original design concept was to do a site that had an activism feeling to it, that prompted you to take action. I thought the logo worked really well. Truls took this logo from the mock-up, rotated it and added text. The final result was similar to the image below, with the exception that the text was placed differently.

I'm thinking about using this as the official Open the Web logo when we either update the current page or build a Open the Web site. The text would be updated to OTW or Open the Web of course. Maybe I could even get my own Chief Web Opener version made with the star icon included (perhaps on the wrist or finger) from the Slightly Ajar logo. It is going to be exciting working on the branding of our three sites, to give them a somewhat stronger and consistent brand, but also to each have their own personality. With the development of our developer tools, the continuing advancement of standards in Opera Kestrel, and an active conference schedule '08 is looking to be an exciting year in our team.

Don't forget, if you wish to go to Web Directions North, there is a $100 CAD discount if you sign up with our discount code.

Attend Web Directions North on the cheap

, ,

If you are in the Vancouver area, and are thinking about attending the premier web design conference in Canada - Web Directions North, then we've got some good news for you. I had a fantastic time there last year, and so Opera has decided to push the boat out and sponsor this year's event. This means we get to offer you all a $100 CND discount (Isn't that still worth more than $100 USD?). All you have to do is visit this address and enter the magic code WDNOp, and Bobs your uncle, Marys your aunt. You can even heckle in the back during the Air Vs Silverlight talk (Only kidding please don't do that. We know the Open Web wins in that battle wink)

Mr Chris Mills will be attending the event, along with myself. Please come speak to us if you have any questions about Opera or any problems with compatibility. If you have Opera Mini on your phone, we may even buy you a beer.
