Slightly ajar

I'm compressed

, ,

Some news hot off the press. Google now GZIP compresses their web pages, even when you identify as Opera. The effect of this is that Google's pages now will load faster in Opera. This is especially noticeable on text heavy pages, as content such as images are usually compressed to some degree already.

Previously Google was sending text/html to Opera, while sending GZIP'ed content to the other browsers, such as IE and Firefox. This gave the impression that Opera was slower. A big thank you goes out to Google and Hallvord for fixing this issue and allowing Opera an equal footing.

Thank god! I had started to believe this would never happen.
Thanks a lot to all for this

 - though it is pretty amazing the google code monkeys took so long to fix something so obviously stupid...

Oh, remember that there are still other major sites that make the same dumb mistake:

I have a compression discrimination tester available here:

We are doing out best to contact the major sites about this issue. Your list and tester look very useful. Hopefully this is the first step in convincing sites to give us compressed content.
