St. Paddy's day has just been and gone, but there is another reason to celebrate, for today is St. Cuthbert's Day. St. Cuthbert is the patron saint of the Kingdom of Nothumbria. For those of you that don't know, Northumbria at it's peak stretched from Edinburgh in the North to the banks of the Humber in the south and wasn't annexed by England until 1237. Modern day Northumbria can be seen as the North East England, primarily Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Cleveland.

In modern days, St. Cuthbert's day is not celebrated as much as Paddy's day, which is a shame as he was one of the most popular and important saints in England. So break out your Lindisfarne mead, Alnwick rum and Brown Ale and have a toast, or two to St. Cuthbert and Northumbria. Don't forget to dress in your Shepherd's Tartan and sing along to the Northumbrian small pipes
