There's a bunch of cute guys, of course: Fred has been demoted to guardian angel and gets a job at Jane's firm so he can keep tabs on his runaway soul. Both hit all the necessary double-takes and are-you-crazy moments with just the right dramatic frothiness and keep things tethered, if loosely, to the recognizable world.
However, the plot isn't necessarily that original. For one thing, it is quite similar to the movies of "Legally Blonde", with the story being about the once dumb blonde turning into a lawyer and ends up doing a good job, and learns new things about life.
Minus the part where the protagonist dies and enters the new body, it just feels like the same. At least for now.
Another thing, is no doubt the noticeable division between two types of women, with "unattractive but smart and caring" and "Attractive but vain and self centered" - or to stretch it out into another category, the blonde is dumb but the brunette is intelligent. Do we honestly have to use hair colour again to imply how a person really is? I'm not entirely fond of this blend.
Especially if one desires to notice also that all the men in this show are both equally handsome AND smart. Why is this sort of division only apply to women? And very specific? That being said however, I will admit once more that the show is quite pleasant. It is the first pilot after all, so hopefully it will develop some more and broaden the horizons, and certain characters get more character development.
Not only does he have the depth perception Ken’s currently navigating the world without, but also, constantly working between New York and Detroit won’t be a problem since Pete’s personal life is in shambles and any respite from his mother would likely be considered welcome.
As so much of the episode was a reminder of Don Draper’s true nature, the reveal that Bob Benson is also a “self-made” man who achieved his position, more or less, by fraudulent means synchs up quite well (although Bob only absconded with a pencil sharpener and Christmas card list).
And though the series has been on the air for six years now, it seems as if you need to continuously remind yourself that this show is, for all intents and purposes, a vampiric soap opera, as season 1 was the only time the series could have been considered a streamlined drama.

But with longtime series scribe Brian Buckner taking over as showrunner for season 5, and Raelle Tucker, who penned the terrific season 1 finale, taking on the first episode of the season, there’s a real reason to be intrigued and excited about what the premiere, as well as the season, has in store for its characters.
Such encouraging and hopeful feelings are quickly squashed, though, as Drop Dead Diva finally reveals itself for what it is: a self-working machine, where writers and directors are really only there to continue progressing what’s already been established.
Typically, what’s already been established would be series formatting, character personalities, visual styles, etc. But in the case of Drop Dead Diva, what’s already been established is its proverbial cornucopia of characters stories, with an open-ended seasonal storyline to boot.

The press material for Lifetime's new comedy "Drop Dead Diva" contains a lot of accolades from "women's groups" in which terms like "role model" and "grab your girlfriends" appear with alarming frequency -- as if the publicity department were bracing critics for a show that should be viewed through a political or genre framework instead of simply as, you know, a television show anyone might enjoy. (The term "role model" especially tolls in a critic's ear with as much anticipatory delight as Poe's funeral iron bells.)
Deb, played by Brooke D'Orsay, meanwhile, is a tight-bodied empty-headed model-actress (guess which one is blond; go ahead, guess) on her way to audition for a job Vanna White made famous.
With a setup like this, it would be very easy to fall into a veritable showcase of sexism -- How dumb was Deb? How fat is Jane? -- but Berman produces a deft juggling trick of heart and humor, balancing Deb's shallowness with some solid common sense and Jane's inadequate self-esteem with kindness and legal brilliance.
Almost impossibly, Elliott manages to embody both personalities in a way that, far from some tedious "Inside the Actor's Studio" lesson in character assimilation, is just delightful to watch. She is aided in this wacky scenario by a serviceable if predictable diagnosis of semi-amnesia and, more important, by Margaret Cho as Jane's trusty assistant, Teri, and April Bowlby as Deb's equally shallow but still loyal best friend, Stacy.
