CASSANDRA’S DREAM – 3 Movie Clips and the Trailer

Opening on January 18th is the new Woody Allen movie “Cassandra’s Dream.” And just like his last two films – “Match Point” and “Scoop” – the movie is set in London.

For all of you that might be wondering when is Woody coming back to America, the next movie after this takes place in Barcelona, and the rumor is that his next film will be back in the place he’s called home for many decades – New York City.

Getting back to “Cassandra’s Dream,” since I haven’t had a chance to see it yet…I’ll let the official synopsis do the talking. I’m crossing my fingers that this is more “Match Point” and less “Scoop.”

“Cassandra’s Dream” is a powerful and thrilling story about two brothers (Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell) who are desperate to better their troubled lives. One is a chronic gambler in debt over his head, and the other is a young man in love with a beautiful actress (newcomer Hayley Atwell) he has recently met. Their lives gradually become entangled into a sinister situation with intense and unfortunate results. Written and directed by Academy Award winner Woody Allen, the film also stars Tom Wilkinson and Sally Hawkins. The score is by Philip Glass and the cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond.

Long way back

On the back of their latest awfully big adventure, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman tell Simon Mills that the best thing about Africa was the people - but they also managed to knock the self-esteem of the Hollywood pin-up

For their mammoth Long Way Down adventure, best friends Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode their motorbikes from John O'Groats in Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa, travelling through 18 countries on two continents and covering over 15,000 miles. Both riders insist that they didn't have a major argument at any time during the trip.

You travelled all through Africa. Did one country particularly stand out for you?

Ewan Borders are just lines on a map and even when you cross them there usually isn't much marked difference in terrain and climate. But there were some surprises. One day we were riding across Sudan, which was tough going — very hot and lots of sand. Then, when we crossed into Ethiopia, it suddenly turned, green, wet and cold.

Charley The traffic in Ethiopia was quite a shock, too. Up until then we hadn't seen much in the way of vehicles, but suddenly there were trucks and sheep and cows and goats and people everywhere.

Ewan Oddly enough, you really notice men's bodies out there. They are incredible. Because they don't eat any shit and they walk everywhere, as I believe we were designed to do, their bodies are surprisingly ripped. Looking at them can really be quite bad for your self-esteem.

Charley And when you come back to Europe, you really notice the difference in people's sizes.

Did you fall in love with Africa?

Charley Both Ewan and I found it quite difficult to leave. Each country had its moments but most of all we loved being with the people in the busier places. For instance, Namibia was vast and stunning, but we missed the bustle, the human traffic of East Africa Kenya and Rwanda.

Ewan The further south we travelled, we found that black Africans became less accessible somehow. In places like Rwanda, Kenya and Ethiopia, they had been everywhere, but in the south they were cleaning tables at restaurants, which seemed odd. We both preferred being in the middle, in the backwoods. So, after we finished the trip in Cape Town, we met up with our families and went straight back to Kenya.

Did you come across any danger?

Charley People warned us off lots of countries. Someone would say, for instance, "Stay away from Sudan. It's full of thieves." And we'd say, "Have you been there then?" "Er, no."

Did you have any rows along the way?

Ewan It would have been extraordinary to have travelled such a long way and not fallen out at some stage, but there really wasn't any big bust up...

Charley No more than you'd have with your wife.

Ewan, your wife came along for some of the ride. How did that work out?

Ewan My wife actually learned to ride a bike to join the trip. She rode with us through Malawi and Zambia, and it was lovely to share some of the journey with her. It's easy to come home and tell stories of the people you've met and events that have happened, but what's difficult to convey is the actual nature of the journey and how it feels. She experienced all that and absolutely loved it. She said it made her feel 20 years old again, like a proper traveller.

So will family holidays ever be the same again in the McGregor household?

Ewan I guess we've become used to staying in hotels when we go on holiday with the kids, but I think this trip has changed us. We'll now go and do more adventurous, outdoor stuff with the kids.

You slept under canvas most nights. Are you happy campers?

Charley We discovered that often it was better to sleep in a nice familiar tent than to go off and look for a hotel. You need to think Gucci when you are camping — make things as luxurious as you can.

·The final episode of Long Way Down will screen this Sunday on BBC2 at 9pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Othello

Shakespeare has been big box office in the West End recently with Sir Ian McKellen currently selling out theatres as King Lear and up until last week, when it closed, it was impossible to find tickets to see Patrick Stewart as Macbeth in a production now transferring to Broadway.

Now the latest massive draw is Michael Grandage's Othello at the Donmar starring Ewan McGregor as Iago.

McGregor's presence on the cast list would be A-list enough but by adding Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kelly Reilly to the billing, Grandage has sold out the 251-seat auditorium for the entire run and pairs of tickets are selling for £1,000 on eBay, although 10 seats are available each day for those willing to queue from the crack of dawn.

Ejiofor is Othello, the Moorish general who shocks Venetian society when he marries Desdemona, played by Reilly. Shortly after their marriage, Othello is ordered to Cyprus to fight the Ottoman invasion.

Driven by his hatred and envy of Othello, Iago, a junior officer, sets out to destroy him by convincing him that Desdemona is having an affair with Othello's second in command, Cassio, played by Tom Hiddleston.

But is it the delights of Shakespeare's verse or the prospect of seeing favourite film and TV stars in the flesh that is proving irresistible to audiences? The panel discuss whether they were seduced by the production's star appeal.

Othello continues at the Donmar Warehouse in London until 23 February 2008

Hot ticket: Othello,

Dominic Cavendish looks forward to a starry Shakespeare in Covent Garden

Not since Nicole Kidman disrobed in David Hare's The Blue Room almost a decade ago has there been such a commotion in Covent Garden.

Ewan McGregor (left), Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kelly Reilly star in Othello
Tickets for the Donmar's new production of Othello flew out of the box office the moment bookings opened and have since been reportedly changing hands online for up to £1,200.

The principal reason for that stampede is Ewan McGregor (above left), playing Iago to Chiwetel Ejiofor's (above centre) Moor.

All eyes will be on the screen star to see whether, with relatively little stage experience, he can handle a Shakespearean lead. Ejiofor and Kelly Reilly (above right), as Desdemona, are also near-newcomers to the classical canon, but it's still hard to see how, with the inventive Michael Grandage at the helm, things could go anything other than very very right.

The good news for people with legs of steel is that 10 day-tickets (max a pair per person) will be released every morning at 10.30 with up to 20 standing spaces also available. Regard it as a dress-rehearsal for the January sales.

LONG WAY DOWN CHARITY PARTY

EWAN McGREGOR & CHARLEY BOORMAN HOST THE LONG WAY DOWN UNICEF CHARITY PARTY

After spending three months travelling the Long Way Down through Europe and Africa, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman concluded their 15,000 mile adventure in Cape Town, South Africa in August this year. Tonight, Thursday 8th November, Long Way Down hosted the party of the year in an effort to raise money for lead charity partner UNICEF, as well as CHAS (Children's Hospice Association of Scotland) and Rider's For Health, whom they also supported on their journey.

Held at Evolution in Battersea Park and generously sponsored by Belstaff, Nissan, Nokia and TOTAL, the star-studded event was a night to remember, and an opportunity to raise valuable funds for UNICEF's projects in Africa. Hosted by Ewan and Charley, guests including Elle Macpherson, Jay Kay, Damon Hill, Sharleen Spiteri and James Nesbitt sat down to a meal before participating in an auction which helped the total money raised on the evening top £300,000. Highlights from the auction included a replica of the BMW bike that Ewan and Charley rode on their trip which fetched £50,000 and a Long Way Down limited edition Nissan Navara that sold for £42,000. At the end of the evening guests were able to enjoy exclusive live sets from both The Magic Numbers and Beth Orton.

Ewan and Charley, continuously supported by producers/directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian, visited 3 sites over the course of their journey in an effort to raise awareness for Long Way Down's charity partners, in particular UNICEF's projects in Africa.

Ewan, Charley and the Long Way Down team are committed to raising as much money as possible for children affected by HIV, poverty and conflict in Africa and hope that tonight's fundraising event will go a long way towards achieving that goal.

Everyone at Long Way Down wishes to thank everyone who came and contributed to a great evening.

We would also like to thank our wonderful sponsors Nokia, Total, Nissan and Belstaff who supported the event and ensured that all proceeds go directly to charity.

Thank you all for your continued support
The team at Long Way Down.

Ewan Makes Special Appearance At Smythson | Vogue

EWAN McGregor and Charley Boorman made a special appearance at the Smythson store on Bond Street this week to celebrate the launch of their new book, Long Way Down. Arriving on their motorcycles, they were met by Smythson CEO Paddy Byng and a host of guests, including Helena Bonham-Carter, Tim Burton and Jamie Dornan, who sipped Veuve Clicquot and Belvedere cocktails. The book celebrates McGregor and Boorman's journey from John O’Groats to South Africa by motorcycle, the journey of which is now part of a documentary on BBC2. Guests also took part in a raffle to raise money for UNICEF, prizes including one of the company's Nancy bags and a limited-edition Smythson, handmade, leather bound set of Long Way Down, signed by both McGregor and Boorman. Less limited-edition but equally coveted are Smythson's Fashion Diaries: last year, for the tenth anniversary of the Fashion Diary, Smythson asked the likes of Alexander McQueen and Giambattista Valli to design an exclusive diary.
