The Peace Chain
Tuesday, 21. July 2009, 20:09:58
This is a post in response to Claude`s initiative of creating a chain of peace. I`m adding a new link to the chain and hope you readers will like the idea and join it. Here`s a link to Claude`s blog: http://my.opera.com/holdowicz-claude/blog/ Claude invited me to the The Peace Chain.
I am pleased with inviting, I want to join The Peace Chain. Poles want the peace very much. In my country even not a long time ago it was restlessly. In Poland in 1981 r. authorities implemented the martial law, during which many people stayed killed or closed in prisons. The martial law lasted three years. It was a time of the great violence in my country. I remember tanks in the streets of my city. It is terrible feeling, you just cannot know what will happen. The ordinary men fought with the socialist system, and authorities sent tanks against them.
13 December 1981 r. in the morning Poles unexpectedly saw the army in the streets.
Such events took place in Poland 1981 - 1983
The ordinary men fought for the freedom then, but great participation in this fight had also a song. Claude wrote that even the song could do a lot .. for The Peace. I want to tell about one of songs which supported us very much in those difficult times. Songs of the band U2 often refers to current events in world. Song under the title "New Year's Day" is devoted to the situation in Poland during the martial law. Words of the song aren't telling directly about events in Poland. Bono didn't relate events, but he handed his emotions over. It is a song about love, however inspired with situation of the ordinary men standing in the face of difficult times. Bono confessed that: "subconsciously I had to think about detaining Lech Wałęsa, about the fact that his wife wasn't allowed to see him. When we recorded this song they announced, that martial law in Poland, will be canceled in the new year. Remarkable.”
Now the song often resounds at concerts. Poles remember the song was written specially for them after implementing the martial law, therefore at the concert in Chorzów in 2005 r. during a concert tour Vertigo, fans prepared unusual surprise. Internauts wrote to each other, and therefore at the concert 80 000 people at the stadium created the huge Polish flag. When the first tacts of the song sounded, suddenly all fans beneath the stage raised red flags and scarves, and white flags on podiums of the stadium. In this way the entire stadium in a flash looked as large white- red flag. This made huge impression on the band. Bono took the jacket off, he put the jacket on again, but the lining fabric was visible now. The jacket had red lining fabric!, and in this way Bono became the part of our flag.
In the band’s biography "U2 by U2" we will find his statement: "visiting Poland was the most wonderful moment of the entire tour, when I stood on the stage and I turned to the audience, entire stadium of 80 000 people, was white and red. From the impression I didn’t knew if to sing or not. It was an unusual emotional moment for everyone who could see it ".
The song can do really much for the peace and then everyone remember it for a long time. These are the wonderful memories.
The music and other activity of U2 is contributing to the Peace in world and therefore Bono, received the award in Paris "Man of Peace 2008". Winners of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded a prize, including Lech Wałęsa and the ex-president Frederik RSA de Klerk. Remarkable.
