When it comes to teaching them to drive, most parents simply don’t think much about the course they are going to select; they assume that the courses being offered in school or through private programs must be good. The truth is, these courses, the traditional or classroom courses as we will call them in this article, are not good choices for your teens; they are one of the worst choices you can make as a parent. As more and more teens take these traditional courses, the grim reality continues to shine.
A recent study performed in Texas compared the accident rates of all the traditional drivers ed students with those of students using a parent taught drivers education course. The collision rates were based on the first two years of driving after obtaining their licenses. The results were astounding.
In the case of the students using the traditional driving programs, they had a collision rate of 11.4%. That means that almost 2 out of every 10 students using a traditional driving program were going to get into a collision within their first two years of driving.
So now you might be wondering what the collision rates were for the students using the parent taught parent taught drivers ed courses. They were less than 1.4%. That means that almost 2 out of every 100 students ever got into a collision within their first two years of driving. That’s quite a difference isn’t it? Well it’s about 8 times the difference; it’s huge.
So what accounts for such a huge difference in results? It’s definitely not the teachers, and it’s definitely not the students. It is simply the curriculum being taught. When it comes to the traditional driving courses they have really only one goal in mind when they are training their students; help them pass a driving test. These courses are simply not designed with safe driving in mind, they are not teaching these teens how to be safer on the roads, they are teaching them the absolute bare bones basics of driving.
When it comes to these courses, there is a reason they are designed with such lack of fundamental safety knowledge; they simply don’t have the time. They are designed around a strict timeline that allows teaching for the laws that need to be followed and the basic operations of the vehicle; they are not designed to teach these students how to actually operate these cars. The difference with the parent taught drivers ed programs is that they are designed to teach both the students and the parents how to become better drivers and how to stay safe behind the wheel of a car; they are also allowed to take their time and learn on their own schedules. The parents and students are allowed to master each section of driving and instruction before they are forced to move on.
When it comes to parent taught drivers ed courses in Texas, they have a much different approach than their traditional counterparts. The programs are designed to instruct both the parents and the teens on the skills they will need to operate their cars in a safe and controlled manner; they will master the art of driving.
