Much Ado About Something--I'm Just Not Sure What It Is . . .

I remembered about newcomer's orientation at the last minute this morning--but it worked out o.k. Found out a few minor details, like it's illegal to spank a child in Norway for instance . . . hmm, luckily ours haven't seemed to need any such discipline in several years.

All driving infractions are taken very seriously here. DUI = .02 blood alchohol, which means one beer would be enough to put someone over the limit--this shouldn't be a problem for us, but is indicative of the very harsh Norwegian attitude to driving offenses.

My next big challenge will be getting the car registered in the Norwegian system and getting license plates issued. May need some (hopefully minor) alterations to comply with Norwegian standards (i.e., VIN # etching in the engine block, color of light bulbs, etc.)--hopefully nothing major. Fortunately there is a Toyota dealership that is very easy to get to.

Elizabeth and kids seem to be doing well on the move--taken from Skype phone-call contact, and the occasional blog entry by the kids . . . hopefully they are taking the stress of moving, yet again, in stride. By Rebecca's account, she will have moved 6 times by age 14--that should be: Dayton-Ft. Monroe; Ft. Monroe-Ft. Polk; Ft. Polk-Kuwait City; Kuwait City-Ft. Leavenworth; Ft. Leavenworth-Ft. Lewis; and from Ft. Lewis-Norway. We tend to forget the accumulated stress this can bring on, though I must say, the kids remain pretty flexible in this regard, and I am thankful for that.

I finally stopped by a Norwegian "hair-cuttery" to get a long overdue haircut. This place had been recommended as reasonable at 130 kroner for a haircut (about $22 or so), with tip, it came out to about $24 for a haircut--yikes. Some of the folks have their wives cut their hair, but Elizabeth sounds very dubious about this due to one unfortunate attempt long in our past. I know I could do Rebecca's, and likely Elizabeth's too--after all, how hard could it be to do a high-and-tight?

Well, nothing too significant for tomorrow other than a spot of work, perhaps a jog along a fjord, and spending obsene amounts of money for Norwegian diet coke. I can always go to Ikea . . .
