Blowing your nose during cold will make it worse!

,

So says some researchers

Blowing your nose to alleviate stuffiness may be second nature, but some people argue it does no good, reversing the flow of mucus into the sinuses and slowing the drainage.

Counterintuitive, perhaps, but research shows it to be true.

To test the notion, Dr. J. Owen Hendley and other pediatric infectious disease researchers at the University of Virginia conducted CT scans and other measurements as subjects coughed, sneezed and blew their noses. In some cases, the subjects had an opaque dye dripped into their rear nasal cavities.

Coughing and sneezing generated little if any pressure in the nasal cavities. But nose blowing generated enormous pressure — “equivalent to a person’s diastolic blood pressure reading,” Dr. Hendley said — and propelled mucus into the sinuses every time. Dr. Hendley said it was unclear whether this was harmful, but added that during sickness it could shoot viruses or bacteria into the sinuses, and possibly cause further infection.

The proper method is to blow one nostril at a time and to take decongestants, said Dr. Anil Kumar Lalwani, chairman of the department of otolaryngology at the New York University Langone Medical Center. This prevents a buildup of excess pressure.

So how to do it right? Based on EHow's article

  1. Use paper facial tissues instead of cloth handkerchiefs. Germs thrive in dark, moist environments. Wadded-up hankies are a perfect breeding ground for them.
  2. Avoid blowing your nose too hard. Too much pressure will force infectious drainage into your ears and sinuses.
  3. Press one finger over one nostril.
  4. Blow gently through the open nostril.
  5. Repeat on the opposite side.
  6. Use tissues once, then throw them away.
  7. Wash your hands. Germs will be on your fingers after you've handled your nose and your tissue. Don't spread the germs to other people or back to yourself.

Yes people, deal it one at a time

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians, perhaps spoilt for choice with mouth-watering local delicacies every day, are obsessed with losing weight.

About 58% of them are on a mission to shed the kilos, a survey by The Nielsen Company (M) Sdn Bhd revealed.
What’s ironic is that only 4% of the 500 Malaysians interviewed claim that they exercise daily.

I lost 10kg since Christmas 08. Previous weight was aroun 93kg. Now I'm at 82kg and still obese. The trick? Change in food intake. Eat smaller portions but at least 5 times daily plus lots of water. That did the trick for me

Even my jeans and trousers are too big for me now.

p/s: Need to lost another 10kg
