Pat Maginess: Private-Eye

Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

On "Heroism"

We was just sittin’ around the barber shop yesterday talkin’ about Carl
Jung's view of the collective unconscious when somebody, I think it was
Wilbur, brought up the subject of heroism. "It seems to me, that it's
kinda like in the fairy tales" Ben said. "You never gain but that you
lose something. And sometimes you just flat out lose something." So we
all got to that for a while —- except for Jack, who had as usual fallen
asleep in the chair for his afternoon nap —- and we decided that Ben did
make a pretty good point all things considered. That's when old Pete,
who was kinda having a tough go of it mentally since the big fire at the
wig factory a few weeks prior, started mumb'lin to himself. "All them wigs"
he said, takin' a swig of his Coca-Cola and lookin' kinda despondent.
"All them pretty wigs." So we all changed the subject, just to make old
Pete maybe feel a little better, and he did after a while. At which point
it was gettin' pretty close to supper hour, so we went home.

I think that the reason why I like these smallstories so much is, that I can somehow identify with them. Either I know myself in one of the characters, or I know a friend or a relative.

Plus that I find them downright funny. I always fell for the absurd - particularly when the absurd seemed to have got a point. That´s an absurdity in itself.

Do keep ´em coming!

I was thinking that eventually I have to do one more...

...because then I'd have...

...a Barbershop Quartet!

To the tune "Shine on harverst moon." I think that's the standard one here in America for that type of thing.
