Pat Maginess: Private-Eye

Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

Asparagus On Mars

A while back I proposed an idea to send an old, beat-up Edsel to Mars --
simply because we could. Well there's been some interesting news lately
that I think works into that, or could work into that.

Scientists now think that with the soil composition and moisture content
on Mars that it would be a perfect place to grow asparagus.

Well that is wonderful news. I've been thinking now that it might be
possible to not only get that Edsel up there, but we might also be able
to send seeds and task the little rovers currently on station on the
surface to grow asparagus.

Of course, it doesn't make too much sense to grow asparagus on Mars if
there's nobody around to eat it. So I guess we're just gonna have to put
men on Mars after all.

Or maybe rabbits.

Rabbits would probably be cheaper -- less payload.

So that would make it

A) an old Edsel; followed by
B) asparagus; then
C) rabbits.

Sort of my own strange idea of terra-forming.

And in case you are wondering, here's the way that would work. The
little rovers would plant the asparagus. Then, after a period of time,
they would harvest the asparagus and take it to the outer airlock door
of the big Rabbit Module. They would place the vegetable in the air
lock, then hit a button to close the airlock door. That would cause a
light to go off inside of the inner airlock door. Attracted by the
light, the well-trained rabbits would go up to it and hit a button with
their nose which would open the door. Then they would eat the asparagus.

We'd probably have to send rabbit food pellets with the rabbits, just to
keep them fed until the whole asparagus industry took off.

All of this is just the beginning. The long term goal would be to transform
the Martian climate. That way, the rabbits won't have to wear little space
suits.

Let's light this candle!

This is truly an original and revoltutionary idea. I say we send it to NASA,ask for a Billion Bucks for R&D, get the money and then scrub the mission.

@ Angeliki.

Allan Shepard, the astronaut, was stuck up in his space capsule for so long prior to the Mercury I launch that he finally radioed down to the command center, "Why don't you guys fix whatever you need to fix down there and let's light this candle!"

It's a pretty famous line...probably the first famous line from our exploration of space.

It means the equivalent now of "Let's do it!" or "Let's get this done!"

Okay, my dear, that's your English colloquialism lesson for the next six months, I promise.

Shuman, I like the million bucks aspect. But if push came to shove...I think I'd have to actuallly send the rabbits. It's just too tempting!

I just meant that you don't need very much coaching! At least not on that!

I actually remember the Mercury I launch. I was very young, but I remember it. I watched every minute of it.

exactly !!

Incidently, I was just thinking that we might have to find some way to keep down the rabbit population inside the Rabbit Module. I mean, you know how rabbits are.

So I figured we'd just send nothing but lesbian rabbits.

Who's gonna teach the rabbits how to drive?

By CultureSurfer, # 28. June 2008, 18:03:30

@ Naomi.

I thought that the rabbits would just hop around? I mean, that's what they do, right?

Or, they could hitch a ride on the rovers. Maybe that's a possibility! Best to just get the whole mass-transit thing going on Mars from the get-go.

Very good issue, though, Naomi. Thanks for bringing it up!

And, speaking of lesbian rabbits...

lesbian rabbits ??

what a great idea!!

Not related but I couldn't help myself

In my Greek House area, there is Evros River(Evros Delata too ).
, Beautiful nature and all, we have a couple of boats going fishing and an occasional swim, but
the mosquitoes are out of control.
To avoid harming the bees in the area (Melissa will love this),
no spaying is taking place,
So, a group of Greek scientist worked hard to have only male mosquitoes
survive ,
before you knew all female mosquitos from Turkey came over!

I hope no allien rabbits enjoy the lesbian rabbits too!

Well, if they do, Angeliki, I want the video of it! Because that really would be one for the history books.

I suppose there's a possiblity that the alien rabbits could also be lesbians? Dunno.

Alien lesbian rabbits!
ha! that could be a whole new post!
I was looking for pictures of rabbits I ended up with giant rabbits

I guess I have to use my imagination here!

I am hungry and I am alone , so a Greek salad with tuna will do !
see you later alligator

Asparagus is a mighty weird plant. One of my neighbors is growing it and I swear it walks and talks. Especially freaky when it goes to seed - I can easily believe it's a Martian invader.
