Pat Maginess: Private-Eye

Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

Spokane Falls

,

Just a couple of snapshots taken of Spokane
Falls downtown during Richard's recent visit.

I hadn't been down there in years. And on
previous visits had never taken any pictures
for some reason.

The Falls, taken roughly North.

Spokane River exiting out, West.

I'd love to have falls in my town! All we have is a narrow river. And a bay, and a beach of course.

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 20:04

I don't imagine there are too many cities that have a falls in their downtown area. Niagra, maybe. :D

Allan 16. July 2009, 20:10

Come to think of it, we do have several falls here - every night just outside of certain bars...

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 20:19

Ah, the Urban Landscape.

Stardancer 16. July 2009, 20:41

Two rivers converge about two miles north of where I live. One of the rivers is a great stream for tube floating--no falls, but a couple of areas of very mild and very shallow rapids. (Can't really call them "whitewater"--too mild and too shallow.) Both rivers are great for canoeing, fishin', and general all-around water recreation.

Lots of fun.

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 20:50

And skinny dipping? p:

My parking lot has a couple of large ponds. I don't know whether there's fish in them.

PainterWoman 16. July 2009, 20:58

I sure wish there was some body of water a little closer to me than an hour and a half drive. Oh, there's a few man made ponds here and there meandering around some ritzy developments but that's not the same and they are usually gated communities so you can't even get in. As hot as it gets here, I'd think there'd be a mosquito problem around them anyway.

Stardancer 16. July 2009, 21:06

I would imagine there is a lot of skinny dippin', Edward. I'd do it myself if it was as rural as it was 35 years ago, when I....

Nevermind.

:D

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 21:31

@ Pam.

Well I hate to say it, but that is why they call it a "desert". p:

@ Star.

I would never mind at all.

PainterWoman 16. July 2009, 21:40

I think I'm in the wrong place.

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 22:00

Naaah...

:D

Darko 16. July 2009, 22:09

What a coincidence! I started Google Earth today and went to spy over Spokane  There is something called Canadian Island (or something like that) near Spokane river falls, right? And to my surprise, Spokane is not a small city, at all :left:

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 22:24

Yeah, Canadian Island. It basically just feels like an extension of Riverfront Park when you are on the ground floor.

It feels like a small town. Except for Spokane Valley, which is actually its own city now. And ever though it is called "valley" it is pretty flat, and goes on for miles and miles in a very desolate type way -- stores, malls, restaurants, more stores, warehouses, factories. I hate the Valley.

Darko 16. July 2009, 22:35

You hate it because it is boring? We have a part of Belgrade that was built in 60s, at least a part of it. We call it New Belgrade and it actually served as "bedroom" of Belgrade - due to fact that most of inhabitants worked on the other side of a river. But, today, business has moved there and more buildings has been built in a last few years. Not a place I would like to live :left:

Edward Piercy 16. July 2009, 22:57

Are those the buildings built in the 60s?

They kinda look like buildings built in places like Chicago in the 60s that were called "the projects." Except yours look more stylish.

Linda 17. July 2009, 00:06

Beautiful photos Edward. I love waterfalls.

Dare, that area you show looks very industrial. And that row of buildings in the middle and top of the photo----are those apartments? They look very strange, the way they are graduated in height.

Angeliki 17. July 2009, 04:26

a great post Eddie! I am so glad your did feel the "breeze of the falls upon you!" the pictures are fantastic! I am glad you took colored pictures this time around!

PS
it feels like all of you went back to Kindergarden!

oy! the Avatar kid invasion!

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 04:41

Thanks, they were okay considering I couldn't set shutter speed. Or use a polarizer. Or...

The Avatar Kid Invasion. I like it!

Join us or be conquered! p:

Angeliki 17. July 2009, 04:48

p: I might,
not sure yet ...

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 04:53

We need a good Greek kid who can wield a sarissa. Or mabey a sharp pencil. p:

Angeliki 17. July 2009, 04:56

hahaha I was ash blond
and a little devilish face,
you all still look very much alike
to your baby pictures...
especially Allan!

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 05:07

Strange but Allan even seems to have the moustache as a kid. p:

He's gonna kill me.

Put your kid photo up! We could really get this going!

(BTW I'm not going to keep the kid avatar forever.)

Darko 17. July 2009, 06:00

No, this is a bit newer part. Red ones are built during 70s, distand stairs-look ones are from 80s and lower left white ones are from late 90s. These are all appartments and this is what I dislike with that part of town - it has no soul.
Linda, most of the appartments built after World War Two, in Eastern Europe, looks the same - if you find photos of East Berlin, newer (between 1950 and 1990) parts of Moscow, Budapest, Bucharest, Prague,..... they all look similar. Like these ones in New Belgrade :yuck:

Linda 17. July 2009, 06:04

That's why I love old homes built before the 50s. They have so much more character than the cracker boxes they build now. Ugh! And apartment complexes seem to be taking over the world.

Darko 17. July 2009, 06:07

Yes, there are too many of us :left:

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 06:22

I don't mind apartment buildings, but I will agree that most of the new ones have no soul (as you put it). And that goes for a lot of the condos and single family homes as well. Cheaply constructed is one thing. But why that means they have to be architecturally boring or vacuous or even hideous I don't know. The bauhaus designers seemed to set a path in terms of functionalism. But a log cabin is functional too, and yet most have a nice feel to them.

Allan 17. July 2009, 06:23

About the avatar kid invasion...

Did I start that? I am so sorry.

Darko 17. July 2009, 06:27

Don`t be :D We are all someone`s kids

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 06:28

I guess that would make you our Fearless Leader, Allan.

Allan 17. July 2009, 06:33

Your mighty leader in shorts and sandals...

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 06:42

Fine with me.

Darko 17. July 2009, 06:43

Richard 17. July 2009, 16:16

Thanks for taking us down there, Edward. They were good to see - especially those basalt (we think) rocks. Lovely bridge too.

Edward Piercy 17. July 2009, 17:45

Richard, I'm not sure but I think "basalt-I-think" is an actual geological term. Or at least it was for us archaeologists. p:

Richard 19. July 2009, 03:16

Richard 23. July 2009, 00:52
