Pat Maginess: Private-Eye

Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

Flying: Canine Class

,

A little libation for the flight.
Just poor it in the dog bowl please.

Does your dog need a vacation? Well it seems you can send them First
Class now via Pet Airways. They will pamper your pet, and even have
flight attendants (I assume the attendants are human) and the pets get
to stretch their legs a bit and run around in the cabin. How they get
them all back in their dog carriers or prevent them from fighting each
other I don't know. And I would imagine that at least occasionally a
few of the pooches join the mile high club.

Hmmm. I wonder how much money can I scrape up to send my dog Sasha
somewhere?

I'm surprised they don't allow you a seat on the same flight.

Phoenix won't fly pets during the summertime because where they put them isn't air conditioned. I never knew that. If I gotta take my dogs somewhere, I'll drive.

edwardpiercy 17. July 2009, 21:16

Yeah, I agree, I would have thought they would have made it for humans and their pets. Just take out every other seat or something and have that space for the dog.

In any case, Sasha is afraid to go out the front door of my apartment, let alone on a plane.

PainterWoman 17. July 2009, 21:25

Even if she's on a leash with you? Do cars going by scare her?

gdare 17. July 2009, 22:08

Do you think dog really care about flying from NY to LA? I think Sasha would like more to go for a walk with you, even to drive in a car with you, instead of flying from NY to LA

edwardpiercy 17. July 2009, 22:31

@ Darko, Pam.

Well to answer both comments at once Sasha just won't go out. I have to drag her all the way. And then coming back she knows she is going home and pulls me the whole way to the door faster than I really can walk.

I'm going to talk with the vet about the problem when I take her in next month.

* feels like taking Sasha away to safety for a few days... *

a great find Eddie

edwardpiercy 18. July 2009, 00:14

Kisses from Sasha (even if she won't go out).

You could send your cat to Greece! She could lay on the beach and send you postcards! p:

ellinidata 18. July 2009, 00:21

my two cats are very different,
one is a trator , purrrrrring to every body,
and the female is a scardy cat, plus if I don't caress her in the morning she cries all day long!
a typical female if you ask me!

I pay big money to a cat sitting place avery time I travel to Greece, I will never have them take the long trip, it will be too risky,
OK
I admit I spoil them ....so what? if I don;t who will???

Stardancer 18. July 2009, 02:33

Hmmph. Sounds to me like just one more way for somebody to take away the money of people who have more money than they have sense.

:D

edwardpiercy 18. July 2009, 02:50

And that's bad...how?

p: p:

Stardancer 18. July 2009, 03:03

I heard this on the news myself. Seems this couple were very unhappy with the treatment their own dogs received when they had to take them on a flight somewhere, and the conditions were bad, as stated. Baggage hold, cold in winter, hot in summer, and not tended very well.

So, being enterprising people, they did their homework and discovered that there was a market for this doggy airplane thing. They are tended just as they would be if boarded somewhere at home, probably better. And they are treated like any other plane passenger.

Seems smart to me. People who really love their animals and have the money can ship their animals and have peace of mind about it. Probably costs a bomb, but people who ship their animals by plane, usually, by definition, have the money to spend on such.

edwardpiercy 18. July 2009, 03:37

Thanks for the supplement, Linda. You know there's hardly any way to take your dog with you. Trains and busses don't do it anymore. And I would think the use of cruise ships rather impracticable.

L2D2 18. July 2009, 03:42

Hmmm. $250 from New York to Los Angeles. That is not as much as I would have thought. Maybe I could catch the Pet Airways! Cheaper.

edwardpiercy 18. July 2009, 03:49

Some restaurants will alow you to bring your pet. It's usually the ones with private dining rooms.

L2D2 18. July 2009, 03:55

More places are allowing pets, but still not generally accepted. Health Food laws prevent admission to any food preparation establishments; helper animals are excepted in some of these places now.

edwardpiercy 18. July 2009, 04:02

My dog is trying to eat my pillow as we speak.

L2D2 18. July 2009, 08:17

Last dog I had ate my couch. Literally.
I had to buy a slip cover.

L2D2 18. July 2009, 08:18

I rescued him. He suffered from acute separation anxiety when I would leave him alone.

there is a solution to why she doesn't want to go outside -- there might have been a trama or fear when she was little ....

maybe you could put up a barrier of protection around your front door, leave the door open to allow her to go outside by herself. place your chair outside and sit and wait for her to follow your lead. reward her and leash her to go for a walk. upon return, stop at the entrance and sit for a rest. reward and return to the home. might take a bit, but it might work.

i had to spend many days (weeks) training tawny to not leave the yard when we went out front. her hunting instincts prevented me from being heard. i leashed her with minimal effort but returned frequently when she would not obey. we've been able to go out front and stay in the yard for quite awhile now. i do manage to pick times when there are little distractions, but i'm only being considerate of her and my limitations.

you are a very devoted canine owner ed. there is a solution to this issue. good luck.

edwardpiercy 21. July 2009, 02:33

Thank you very much. I'll try that door method. That sounds promising.

I've taken her toys out with us before and that didn't really work. Maybe if I tried cheese....

1bluebox 21. July 2009, 02:38

food works well for many animals. the open door with her making the decision to leave is what is the reward. the closed door with you making the decision to enter is also the final reward. your little friend has a very big spirit (my neighbor has two -- they are more spirited than my big boxer). the devotion of the hound is invaluable. you are a lucky human to be owned by such.

edwardpiercy 21. July 2009, 02:52

Thank you. :D
