An Old Friend Comes Out Of Retirement

Ironically, taken with my cell phone camera.

Last week was Sasha's first birthday party. And if there was one thing I
realized coming out of the party -- besides how beautiful Sasha is --
was the importance of having Shutter Priority on a camera. Sasha and
"the girls," her friends Annabelle and Lexie, seemed to move constantly.
Only one photo taken from the party actually emerged without some type
of motion blur. And ironically that was taken with my cell phone camera
at just the one moment that one of the dogs happened to sit perfectly
still for two actual seconds.

What I really need is a DSLR. But something like a Nikon D60 would cost
me about $650, and even a Canon G10 or Nikon P6000 would cost about
$500. A new camera does not make it into my list of priorities right
now. Even to take better pictures of Sasha. And a used camera would
still entail an outlay of cash that I can't make right now.

So yesterday I got into a closet and pulled out the big Lowepro camera
bag and got out my old Nikon F100. As far as using it for shots that I
will put on the blog it really just wouldn't work -- I don't always
have the $20 needed for developing and scans. But for Sasha it would
work fine. I think that setting the shutter to 1/400 second would stop
even the whirlwind Sasha. In most cases. And even if it took me a few
weeks to get the developing done they would still be there to record
our life together.

In other ways the F100 is not so good. It's still too heavy for me to
carry around for more than an hour, thereby ruling it out in the main
as a camera to take with me shuttling around town. But for just at home
or on very short jaunts, that I can manage.

I'm still going to stick with my Sony W120. It's a great camera for
most photographic situations. The Nikon will be a supplement. I might
very well have to sell the Nikon in a few months to get some extra cash
for the new laptop I need. But for now it is back in service.

And as fate would have it the F even had a brand new roll of color film
loaded when I pulled it out of the closet. It was like it was saying
"Use me!"

Another Trip to Idaho

,

Me and my neighbor Renee took another trip to Idaho
Saturday in her nice Ford Ranger truck, which is
almost 12 years old now but nonetheless runs great
and which is in beautiful condition.

Over in Idaho we can get cigarettes for less than
1/2 of what we can here in Spokane, simply because
of state taxes. Neither of us being that flush on
money the savings make a big difference. But our
pursuit of cheap cigarettes has in fact reinforced
a history together that has lasted 13 years.

Our trips together are basically sessions in which
we talk about the various issues in our lives. I
tell her the crap and the good things in my life and
she tells me the crap and good things in her own.

We always take the old highway over to Idaho, the
slow one, the one north of the fast interstate. We
pass by what is essentially a sequence of industrial
areas. Not too great to look at. But with the scenery
as it was Saturday, of distant mountains that kept
snow at the higher elevations, it was nonetheless
a nice drive.

We talked. We bought our cigarettes. We came back
to Spokane.

Once back in Spokane I did a number of drinks at
Sunset Junction and waited for a band that seemed
to never show up; or, once they did show up, never
seemed to start playing.

I went home and cooked up a roast beef and cheese and
onion sandwich. Not long afterward, I went to bed.

Still with some snow in the mountains.

Renee.

We got back to Spokane in time for this
absolutely awesome sunset.

The Sparrows did finally start playing.

The Mummy's Hand

,

Four years of diuretics melting the muscles off
my body. Reduced blood pumping to the extremities,
making my hands and feet and face look old beyond
their time. Natural attrition, including aging and
terrible looking teeth I don't have the money to
get fixed.

I have become a mummy. One who lives again.

still in their days. I am not among them."

Photos for Angeliki

,

I had to go downtown earlier today, so I figured
that while I was down there I would take a few
photos that I've been wanting to take for a long
time for Angeliki. As you know, Angeliki is Greek.
And if you don't know she will be sure to tell
you very quickly.

So A., here ya go.

Santorini's used to be a burger place for decades.
But a few years ago the burger place closed and
Santorini's Greek Restaurant soon moved in. I've
never eaten there.

This is Niko's, another Greek place located about
four blocks from Santorini's. It has been there
at least since I moved to Spokane in 1990. I've
never eaten there either -- it's a little on the
spendy side with nice tablecloths and napkins
sculptured in the "bird of paradise" pattern.

Now here's a place that I think all good ancient
Spartans could enjoy, though it's not Greek.

Angeliki, if you are ever in Spokane don't forget
to stop in and get yourself a "special sausage"
at Cap'N Juicy's!

On my way home from town it began to snow. It
wasn't much at all, just very tiny little flakes,
and very sparse. When the tiny flakes would hit
my nose, they would tickle. It was a great feeling.

A Few Shots Around Town

I know I just did a post like this a
short while ago. But I've been testing
our the new little Sony camera, so I
thought I would put up a few others.

Jennifer, aka "Fluffy."

Jennifer and me go way back.

Ryan is one of my two best friends.

A chair.

Not actually a friend, but I would sit
on it if I had to.

Moonrise, Spokane, Dusk.

I had always thought about all these moon
shots that I see. I saw this and I knew it
had to be my own version.
