Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

The Spokane U.S. Figure Skating Nationals

I got a notice from Tickets West this morning informing me that tickets to the 2010 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships to be held here next year in Spokane were to go on sale at 10:00 am.

Ticket prices (per person, $USD) are as follows:

MEN'S & PAIRS WEEKEND PACKAGE    $275

LADIES & DANCE WEEKEND PACKAGE  $375

BOTH WEEKENDS PACKAGE  $525

EVENT TICKET PACKAGE  $595

So if you would like to take your family to the U.S. Nationals, just refinance your house or sell a kidney and contact Tickets West.

(And to think I thought I paid a lot spending $60 for my Valentina Lisitsa ticket!)

This is just too expensive :eyes: Do we get a dinner with a lady skater for that amount?

edwardpiercy 17. September 2009, 20:48

That's a nicer way of putting it than what was going through my head, Darko.

Stardancer 17. September 2009, 21:45

$595 to sit in the audience?!?

Are they nuts?!?

Stardancer 17. September 2009, 21:46

Tractor pulls only cost about $20.

edwardpiercy 17. September 2009, 21:54

So what's the Monster Truck event running these days? I would guess that "upscale" stuff like that would run higher than the tractor pulls. p:

Stardancer 17. September 2009, 22:12

I don't know, Edward. I haven't been to either of these in almost 30 years. Once you've seen one....

edwardpiercy 17. September 2009, 22:30

I know a guy who hires kids to sell ear plugs at the Monster Truck things up at the arena. Even at only $2.00 a pop he makes some decent money, gives the kids 50 percent. I take it that even the people who have been to them before generally have forgotten their plugs or have lost them between events.

He also owns a parking lot next to the arena. He let's people pull in there and park, thinking they've lucked out. And then he goes around and sticks tickets on their windshields for $30. I guess that since the ticket is somewhat official looking that about half the tickets that he gives out are actually paid. Seems a tad on the unethical side to me. But he's the guy with all the bucks.

Stardancer 17. September 2009, 22:34

It is unethical. I wouldn't pay it, at least not without checking with local authorities first. If you're gonna charge somebody to park, charge them up front. He'd make a lot more money charging $5 a vehicle up front, I would think, than sneaking around. Word would get around that the guy is a shark.

:irked:

edwardpiercy 17. September 2009, 22:38

I'd settle for the earplug profits myself. Maybe I could get my own bunch of kids to sell them. It could be like in Gangs of New York. p:

Stardancer 17. September 2009, 22:43

You'd be a Godfather, Edward!

"I'm gonna make 'im an offer he can't refuse."

edwardpiercy 17. September 2009, 22:49

Water balloons only. That's as far as I'm willing to go for frigging earplug profits.

edwardpiercy 18. September 2009, 02:25

Bring a sleeping bag. Cause I sleep on the couch and you are too tall for the loveseat.

L2D2 18. September 2009, 03:07

I would guess that weekend package includes a hotel or motel room as well as attendance at shows. Surely?

ellinidata 18. September 2009, 03:14

 I am scared to sleep on the floor! I am sleeping with Mrs Piercy, and that my final offer !

* who is the guest here? * Homer: Doh!

edwardpiercy 18. September 2009, 04:32

As you know, I recently moved to the third biggest city in Denmark. A few weeks after, I got mail from the city hall containing a nice letter of welcome and all kinds of info about the city including an updated map and a variety of free thickets to all sorts events, exebitions, museums and stuff. It's a tradition in Denmark. Some cities you'd even get a signed letter of welcome from the mayor's office. Anyways, one of those thickets was to the local ZOO, and I was puzzled, because it said that I had a free pass on a specific date in february. I got curious (I am, after all, an ex-journalist) so I cheked it out on the interweb. As it is the ZOO is open for everybody, free at charge on this specific date, so my special free thicket is not particularly special, is it? Does that qualify as a scam?

edwardpiercy 19. September 2009, 06:53

 maybe you could just consider it a friendly reminder of a future event??

Wow, it will never happen here :eyes:

When I moved to Longview, Texas years ago, I had what they called the Welcome Wagon come to my house. They gave me a bundle of all kinds of neat freebies, some free meal coupons at various restaurants, free movie coupon, and discounts to a lot of retail shops. They quit doing that, though, after the city started growing so fast. It was a nice gesture, though, and it also included places to see and things to do in the city and area.
