Pat Maginess: Private-Eye

Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

Saturday Morning

I got up this morning not feeling all

that great so I grabbed a good cup of

coffee and just sat on the loveseat for

a while. As I was sitting there it

occurred to me that it didn't really

make much difference whether I was

feeling good or not -- after all it's not as

if I had to go to work or repaint the

house.

Which reminded me suddenly of my

days as a kid. Saturday morning was

my favorite day of the week: No school

as on the weekdays, no church like on

Sunday, and best of all cartoons on till

noon. And then it would be lunch time.

Would my mom make grilled cheese

and tomato soup? I sure hoped so. And

some pickle slices with it too perhaps.

I guess it's not so much different for

me now. Except that now it's college

football instead of cartoons. And I think

I'll have a grilled cheese too -- if I can

talk my mom into making it for me. p:

:D Grilled chees and tomato soup was a favorite. Or, a bologna sandwich with potato chips was even better, along with a glass of lemonade.

Just like the kind of Saturday I remember.

edwardpiercy 19. September 2009, 19:36

Ummm. Bolgona sandwich.

Were you mustard, or mayonaisse?

PainterWoman 19. September 2009, 19:49

Neither. I was a finicky eater when I was a kid and didn't like anything but butter on sandwiches.

edwardpiercy 19. September 2009, 19:52

I've never heard of that.

ricewood 19. September 2009, 20:47

You were one lucky child. We had no cartoons on TV - except for half an hour Saturday afternoons from 4 to 4:30

edwardpiercy 19. September 2009, 20:53

Really? So how did you spend your Saturdays? Simply curious.

gdare 19. September 2009, 20:56

You know I can`t remember how my saturdays were when I was a kid. It probably depended on a season, but it was definitely without school

L2D2 19. September 2009, 21:43

No TV when I was a kid, not till 1954, and I don't remember what I did on Saturdays. Went to town with Mama and Daddy for weekly grocery shopping I guess. And after we moved to town (Paris, Tx) I and sister would walk to town to see the Saturday matinee double feature---9cents each.

edwardpiercy 19. September 2009, 22:05

I think the Saturday matinees were an institition almost across so many years. But you know today if I walk down to Riverpark Square on a Saturday it's packed with young people going to the AMC theaters. So I guess it's still there.

Of course these days it costs about $20 per kid if you throw in popcorn and a Coke.

L2D2 19. September 2009, 22:11

I know. I remember I was horrified when the tickets went from 9 cents to a quarter.

Stardancer 19. September 2009, 22:23

I don't remember much about Saturdays when I was a kid. But when my son was little, he'd wake me up earlyearlyearly on Saturday mornings, and we'd grab blankets and pillows and pile up on the couch and watch cartoons. Then it was breakfast, and out the door to see what trouble we could get into. Sometimes it was shopping-cart-races at WalMart or the grocery store (until they'd throw us out, giggling all the way to the car). Sometimes it was chasing lizards and frogs at the pond in the park, accidentally-on-purpose falling in until soaked head-to-toe. Sometimes it was off to Nana and Papa's, so he and Papa could get in trouble together for a change.

Saturdays were always the week's "Fun Day."

I miss them.

ellinidata 19. September 2009, 23:13

our days are as good as we make them to be,
and I hope yours are always good days...

not all of us paint a house,
despite of our aches and pains ,
we are on this earth for a reason and we should make the best of it.

I do not recall a specific day of the week that I loved when a child.
Maybe because my happy days started as an adult after marrying Michael.

We used to leave NYC the night of Friday drive 130 miles to Pennsylvania house,
spend there a whole Saturday/Sunday and coming back on Monday morning directly to our office.

Cooking, gardening, sewing, visiting the local antique stores was mostly what we did... I would have given a year of my life just to live one more weekend the same way again... But, as I said,
we make our days good or bad.And we make others around us feel it too  In my case my kids, and they deserve only good days

thanks for sharing your childhood memories with us Eddie.

so,
did you get the Cheese sandwich ??

*hugs to Mrs Piercy*

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 02:03

@ Linda

Everything has gone up. But it seems that some things have gone up more than others. I suppose that some of us could rake some consolation in the fact that it's possible to buy a huge flat-screen TV with surround sound and watch a video that we rent for only $2. Popcorn not included.

@ Star

Awww. Sweet! So, you got 86'd from Wal-Mart? p:

@ Angeliki

First, thanks for the link!

"Would trade a year"

I wish you could trade a century for another 20. I wish we all could.

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 02:07

PS Yes my mom did make me a grilled cheese. Although I made my own tomato soup. :D

L2D2 20. September 2009, 02:22

Which was SO difficult to do Mr. Piercy! :D

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 02:32

I had to open a can! My poor fingers hurt!

p:

Stardancer 20. September 2009, 02:53

Yep, I got thrown out of WalMart and a couple of grocery stores. Several times.

They don't appreciate shopping-cart-races down their main aisles on Saturday afternoon.

p:

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 03:05

We just stole the damn things. It was easier that way. p: It went against my Catholic ethics quite a bit, but I just couldn't pass on the opportunity for me and my friends to make a super cool go-cart.

@Linda
You lived in Paris, Texas? Have you seen a move made by Wim Wenders "Paris Texas"?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087884/

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 06:47

I just saw "Happy, Texas" last night. Seriously.

gdare 20. September 2009, 06:58

There is a town called Happy in Texas?

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 07:06

No, I think it was made up.

gdare 20. September 2009, 07:35

ellinidata 20. September 2009, 13:50

I love to visit Texas one day for pleasure, I have been to Houston and Dallas but both times on business.. not much time for fun!!

ellinidata 20. September 2009, 13:50

forcing you to see the blooming flowers??? :D

wickedlizard 20. September 2009, 18:11

Saturdays with cartoons all morning.. yeah. :D

But I now get cartoons all week and all night if I want to. :left:

We have Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and god knows what else. :eyes:

L2D2 20. September 2009, 18:19

There probably is a Happy, Texas. I had some strange place names in one of my first posts. I will see if I can find it and put a link here. I have been through Bug Tussle, Tx. many times.

I think I did see the movie a long time ago, but not remembering anything about it.

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 18:34

@ Isabel

Oh yeah, kids (or adults) can watch cartoons all the time anymore. I don't know whether that's good or bad!

@ Linda

It's about these two escaped convicts who somehow end up in this little town (Happy) and end up coaching a preen beauty contest for the local girls. It not as good as a Cohen movie, but is almost woerth watching just to see William H. Macy as this gay sheriff.

L2D2 20. September 2009, 21:10

Yes, I remember it now, Edward, and I have seen it. Couldn't find that post with Texas names. May have been in a comment somewhere.

edwardpiercy 20. September 2009, 23:48

Heaven's d'mergatroid!

 you know I had forgotten entirely about that phrase. And now that I'm older I wonder how the hell they came up with it. (Is it French? p: )

Thanks, Isabel!

edwardpiercy 21. September 2009, 00:11

PS @ Isabel

Well I did some research and found this

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/heavens-to-murgatroyd.html

Kinda disappointing really. I was sure it was French!

Lolita? Uh oh. p:

L2D2 21. September 2009, 02:20

A little bit of history of Gun Barrel City, Edward.

It was incorporated in the late 1960s so it could legally sell beer and wine. The city takes its name from a former road, Gun Barrel Lane (which is now State Highway 198), as well as its motto, "We Shoot Straight with You" and its symbol (originally a rifle, now two crossed antique pistols). Gun Barrel Lane got its name during the 1920s and '30s when outlaws frequented the area. It was considered a safe backwoods place during Prohibition when the likes of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker hung out in the area. A Mr. C. L. Wait lived along the road and was known for sitting at the window of his house with a shotgun sticking out the window. It was his way of deterring those he deemed unwelcome on this back country road.

L2D2 21. September 2009, 02:21

I remember seeing that movie many moons ago. Lolita that is. It was considered very racy at the time.

edwardpiercy 21. September 2009, 02:36

Thanks for the history, Linda. That's great stuff.

Yeah I think when Lolita came out I was too young to really understand what the BFD was with it.

I never have been motivated enough to wade through 500 pages plus of Nabokov's novel.

gdare 21. September 2009, 07:25

Camelot and Lolita are hilarious :jester: I guess it is not easy to sleep in Bangs
