Pat Maginess: Private-Eye

Hard Shelled Detective Fiction by Edward Piercy

Worldwide Day of Play

You know I was just watching one of the cartoon channels,
Nickelodeon, and I guess that today is the Worldwide Day
of Play. So they are suspending cartoons after 12:00 noon to
encourage kids to go outside and play.

Anybody want to come over and play pitch and catch with
me? Or maybe a little 4-square? I have to admit that it really is
a nice day for it here in Spokane for that type of thing.

As long as the play doesn't involve running, Edward, count me in. Maybe May I? Running would kill me.

Aqualion 26. September 2009, 18:26

I'd have to ask my mum.

edwardpiercy 26. September 2009, 18:37

@ Linda

I can't run either, Linda. But we can find things to play at. :D

Now that I think about it I don't think I could get through more than 3 minutes of 4-square. So I'd have to kick ass really really fast.

@ Martin

Tell her that ALL the other moms are letting their kids go!

And that it will help keep you off drugs.

p:

L2D2 26. September 2009, 18:42

I am not familiar with 4-Square, Edward. I don't think that was a Texas game. Unfortunately, most of the childhood games I play involve too much physical exertion except for May I and I Spy.

edwardpiercy 26. September 2009, 18:50

I was thinking Hide And Seek doesn't take a lot of energy.

L2D2 26. September 2009, 18:52

Yeah. You can be IT.

edwardpiercy 26. September 2009, 19:01

Okay. I've got GPS!

L2D2 26. September 2009, 19:50

No fair! You have to do it the old-fashioned way. No technology.

edwardpiercy 26. September 2009, 19:55

I wanna see the manual on that. I'm sure there's a loophole.

Stardancer 26. September 2009, 23:09

I have a ball and glove, and a four-square ball, Edward. But I have to clean my room first.

:D

L2D2 26. September 2009, 23:29

Please. someone, tell me what four square is

Stardancer 26. September 2009, 23:36

There ya' go, Linda. It's just a simple playground game that can get very complicated, depending on the variations you want to try. The video shows the basic rules and what the court looks like.

L2D2 26. September 2009, 23:38

Thanks. Nope, not anything I ever played or saw played.

Stardancer 26. September 2009, 23:40

edwardpiercy 26. September 2009, 23:49

Thanks Star.

Linda I don't know if you've ever played ping pong, but 4-square is similar when the players start shuttling the ball at a low angle and putting torque/spin on it.

Star, it's a little late now but you could sneek out the window and just let your mom think you are in there cleaning.

Stardancer 26. September 2009, 23:52

I'll just shove everything in the closet and close the door like I always do. Climbing out the window right now.

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 00:01

Ha! I still do that! When I get the new laptop I'll post a photo of my hallway closet!

PS. I wonder if Linda would like to go on a snipe hunt with us. p:

L2D2 27. September 2009, 00:01

Yes, I have played ping pong but never good at it. hand/eye coordination too bad. My eyes take a long time to focus.

ellinidata 27. September 2009, 00:23

Eddie,
you might like this picture to have

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 00:46

I did get outside a little this afternoon for Play Day. I didn't play any games but I did sit outside of my building on the bench for a while.

This really tall redhead showed up at my building yesterday as I was trying to get Sasha to go outside, had to be 6'1". OMG. Somebody up there just likes to torture me. In any case Sasha liked her and even "danced" for her.

I am still waiting for Johnny Depp! there is no justice in this life ! p:

L2D2 27. September 2009, 03:35

Amen. Who is that gal he lives with anyway? Would like to talk to her!

ellinidata 27. September 2009, 03:39

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 04:00

I count my blessings. Even visiting goddess redheads count.

L2D2 27. September 2009, 05:00

Okay you two. I am talking about the woman who lives with Johnny Depp! Some French woman. I want to talk to her

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 05:04

 johhny and a French woman? I had no idea.

gdare 27. September 2009, 06:58

I contributed with 4 hours of aikido training. Now I am suffering a modest muscle pain. Guess I took Day of Play too serious :left:

L2D2 27. September 2009, 07:37

After all these years, Dare, you are not supposed to get sore after training.

Let me tell you what it is----you are getting older, and starting to have the aches and pains that come with aging, and I promise you, they will get worse!

gdare 27. September 2009, 08:02

awww

Aqualion 27. September 2009, 10:49

Oh, the humanity! About five years ago, when I was still in my thirties, a friend of mine (+40) told me to enjoy my youth while I could. 'Turning thirty,' he said is nothing. 'But when you turn forty, you instantly begin to feel age...' I thought he was kidding in that way, you know, older people will kid the younger. Now, when I have turned forty, I know he wasn't kidding. I made the four tens in January, and I have already gained eight pounds... It's just the start, I'm afraid.

gdare 27. September 2009, 11:28

I am still skinny but some old wounds suddenly started to hurt again :left:

PainterWoman 27. September 2009, 15:34

How about a game of Twister? That should get our joints unstuck.

Slip n Slide was always fun too. This ones' for outside, of course.

OK Mister, I never mentioned her because in my books she does not exist! Her name is Vanessa Paradis, and she is one of the most beautiful women...Plus a singer and actress :D so what? she has to forget that,
she is the mother of his two kids and share him....
and that's something many women around the world agree on!

here she is... I have no idea what he sees in her! p:

@ Darko

As long as you used the official Star Wars Jedi light sabres, it counts as play.

@ Linda, Martin

A person who doesn't exercise has more problems with getting old than one who does. Of course I've no personal experience of that inasmuch as I've never excercised. p:

@ Angeliki

She looks to be one of these "perpetual teenager" types in terms of looks, like Christina Ricci, Amanda Bynes, Alicia Silverstone etc. Except she is very busty. In any case sometimes guys like that, especially if they are over 40.

In fact I just watched a movie with Alicia Silverstone myself last night. And of course this is the point at which ordinarily I would put up a hot photo of her, but  cannot.

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 17:53

@ Pam

I'd be lucky to roll let alone twist. p:

But I could put the music on the ghetto blaster for you.

L2D2 27. September 2009, 17:59

I need exercise so badly, Edward. I know it is making my condition worse, but crap, I get so out of breath just trying to walk! I have to do something about my no-exercise lifestyle soon, though. I know I am worse since I retired and do not get the exercise I got at work.

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 18:04

I'm in the exact same position, Linda. I have to stop and rest for 5 minutes after changing my clothes in the morning, and taking a shower wipes me out for 20.

L2D2 27. September 2009, 18:06

I need to walk, but it is so hard to do where I live. Lots of dogs running loose, and I don't want to walk down the highway. Good way to get offed by drunks and cellphone talkers!

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 18:21

That's a bummer Linda. I guess you have to take a virtual walk on your farm.

I have no excuse. I live in a great neighborhood for walking. In fact I'm even close enough to walk downtown if I got really gutsy.

My trouble is that the breathing problems and deteriorated muscles interfere with the walking, and the walking makes the breathing more difficult. Kind of a chicken and egg problem.

Aqualion 27. September 2009, 19:30

I exercise! I do! I play the friggin' drums, and according to science 2 hours of hefty drummin' equals half a marathon, and I do this sevral times a week. Come to think of it, this might be the reason why I sometimes am sore. Might also be those damn stairs I have to climb everytime I want to leave the house. Might also be the cigarettes. Might also be the Scandinavian weather.

But hey... Basically I'm, okay...

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 19:41

Glad to "hear" it!

I personally feel a lot better in cool/cold weather. But maybe that's just me because of the heart condition.

L2D2 27. September 2009, 20:01

It is more the high humidity than the heat or cold that messes up my breathing. However, I do believe that hot, humid conditions are worse than the cold. I do OK as long as it is dry (which BTW seldom happens in East Texas) This is really a bad climate for people with lung problems.

Aqualion 27. September 2009, 20:07

My doctor says that the more time I spend outdoors the better the condition of my lungs. Not that I have problems breathing - yet. I do cough more and more as I get older, and sometimes I'd even have to get up at nights to just sit and stare until I can breath properly again. Goes with the territory, I suppose, when you just have to smoke, like me.

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 20:17

Martin that having to sit up at night reminds me of my condition. Have you had an electrocardiogram recently? Because it might not be smoking. Well, unless it's emphsema.

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 20:19

@ Linda

Linda you know the primary reason I left Dallas? Too much rain. Seriously. So I moved to Arizona and the desert.

L2D2 27. September 2009, 20:28

So what are you doing in Spokane, Washington, One of the rainiest states in the U.S.? Yeah, I believe you. YOu probably would be better off in some place like Montana! They do have a few towns and cities where you could get an apt. :D

edwardpiercy 27. September 2009, 20:37

It doesn't rain much here in Eastern Washington. The rain hits to the other side of the Cascades in Seattle etc. We're more like the Idaho panhandle.
