Going by bike to work part II of II

, , , ...

After I completed part I of the project "Bike swap", I had a full days work at the office. But at the end of the day I prepared myself for the completion of part II of project "Bike swap" :-)
This time I did not had to go on the bike I normally use in town, but on the bike I bought just the day before. That bike is in a very good state and I decided to go on another route than the route that morning; I already had seen that :-). So at around 17:15 I started in a westerly direction from Nieuw-Vennep and soon was biking alongside flowerbeds. This part of Holland is famous of its flower cultivation and you could really smell all the different flowers! Sometimes very overwhelming!
After the flower indulgement I went even more to the west and entered the dunes of Noordwijk aan Zee. At the first part of this dune section, I cycled through some pine woods. The pine woods itself also have a distinct smell, so I indulged myself also in this nose tickling experience on the bike. Some kilometers further I really entered the dune section and once again the smell altered... this time I could smell the sea and the dunes itself. I made me remember of my childhood when I went to the beach with my big brother and my parents :-)
Soon after it, I entered Noordwijk and cycled over the Boulevard to the south. At the south of Noordwijk I entered again a new section of the dunes, where the little shells of the sea form the bike path.
Even more to the south I entered Katwijk aan Zee; this town looks like Noordwijk aan Zee, but it has some kind of dam in the north. Near this dam, the water has a standstill I think, because you could smell some death fish there... That was the sign for me to go more quickly... After having completed the boulevard of Katwijk aan Zee, once again in the south I entered the dunes. The smell of the sea and the dunes struck me again and I got renewed energy to continue to Wassenaar. Near Wassenaar I left the dunes to the housing area of Wassenaar... well, that housing area of Wassenaar is something extraordinary! In that neighbourhood, some of the most expensive houses are built! It was such a amazing view those houses... some day... Even in Google Maps, a part of this road is unavailable to respect the privacy of the people who live there. The part in the south is available though :-). Continuing on more to the south I finally got near the N14 and close to my appartment.
The way back was a totally different experience than the way I took that morning. Both ways made me realize that Holland is a very diverse country and has some beautiful nature really close by urban areas. And maybe I will do this more often, although it took me 2 hours in the morning and 2 1/2 hours in the afternoon to complete project "Bike-swap". In total it was about 95 kilometers on bike :-)

Here are some of the things I saw during the way back:

Going by bike to work part I of II

Last week, when I was in Sweden, some people in Nieuw Vennep were probably a bit bored and smashed up 20 to 30 bikes... including mine. Realizing it was beyond repair, I quickly set out on a quest to buy a new one.
In the bikeshop I met a colleague and he told me he had a bike for sale because he recently bought a new one. I decided directly to buy it from him and the same day I had a good new bike :-). Actually, it is such a good bike, I don't want to put that bike in Nieuw Vennep. So project bike-swap was formed... To swap my bike that I have here in The Hague with the new one in Nieuw Vennep.

So last Wednesday, when the weather was great, I set off at 06:00 from my house. I decided to take a route east of Leiden and it was great!! The sun came up over a mist filled meadow, after which the cows and the swans appeared from that mist near Voorschoten. I continued to and thru Leiden and after a small trip to the city I reached some meadows again. When going thru the small towns in the meadows, I felt happy and truly think that Holland is a beautiful country. Maybe in some years I will live in another country (who knows because I still have the desire to go abroad...) and I think I will then miss this kind of landscape.
In total, the trip took me 2 hours and it was in total a small 40 km.

To give you an impression about this biketrip to my work, I found some photos on the internet what I encountered.

Weekend away to Sweden

, , , ...

Allright...
Now the ashes settle and the aircraft fly again, I am going to try to get to Sweden this weekend :-) As everything goes as planned... We will arrive in Sweden at Friday at around 18:00, will spend the Saturday hiking and sightseeing and relaxing and on Sunday we will fly back again.

We are really looking forward to it!

For everybody who is interested in the reason why some of the airspace in Europe has been closed down...

As from 16:30 the Belgium airspace has been closed down. As from 19:00 the Dutch airspace will be closed down. And as from 22:00 the Swedish airspce will be closed down. Why would you think?
Well, it all has to do with something that happened in 1982 with Speedbird 9, a Boeing 747 of British Airways. That aircraft was flying to Auckland and encountered some strange glowing on the pilots windshields and the leading edges of the wings, high above the Indian ocean. At that time, nobody really knew what happened and the pilots thought it was a form of the St. Elmo's Fire.
After a while, smoke entered the cabin and soon after that, one by one the engines stalled. Due to the shutting down of the engines, the aircraft became a glider and consequently lost altitude. At a low altitude, the engines suddenly re-lit and the aircraft climbed again to cruising altitude. The pilots also decided to return to Jakarta.
At cruising altitude, some of the engines stalled again and the pilots immediately decided to lower the aircraft. When they reached Jakarta, they noticed that the windshield was completely matte and had very poor visibility; they landed solely on instruments.

What was discoverd was that the insides of the engines were totally accumulated with a fine dust; later to be discovered to be ash from a vulcano. Due to the increased thickness of the engine compressor and especially the turbine blades, the engines surged and could not emit all the air from the back of the engine. It was forced forward inside the engine housing and could enter the bleed air supply for the cabin (the airconditioning) and pushed away the fresh air that the engine needs.
Also, the ashes had a sanding effect on all surfaces, directly in contact with the streams of air. The nose of the aircraft was completely polished, as well as parts of the belly, the leading edges of the wings etc.
The ashes also had a terrible second effect... when in an ash cloud, no radiowaves can be received or emitted... nullifying the radio contact with the Air Traffic Control.

The aircraft was restored and flew again for some some years with European Aircharter

Hope to have given you any insight into this matter.

Look at that trimaran

, , , ...

This is just fantastic!! Just look at the sheer size of this trimaran!! Incredible!
And the techniques used to build this boat is unbelievable. The sail is an actual wing... the fins are shaped in an arc form to pull the pylon down. And the speeds will force the hull out of the water in no-time.

It would be great to have a go on this trimaran!!

Changing the plans...

The snow is really getting the country to a standstill! There are no trains anymore in the west of The Netherlands... and that means that I can't go to the gettogether we had planned! Hmmm... now we have to make a new appointment :-0
At this moment, I see passing by the first train in the last two hours.

Well... what to do then? I just made a nice walk with one of the other people here in my building. There was more snow than I expected and the dog was loving it!! It is fun to see how animals are coping with the snow... in contrary to people, they do not worry about anything and have just lots of fun in the snow. Same thing with children though, sleighing down the snow filled slopes :-)

Let's see if I can get to my work tomorrow!

Enjoy the snow!!!

Finally snow in The Netherlands!!! And of course... that day I had to go to the south of Holland for my work. So the Wednesday I went home in a new Opel, the snow came that night and the next morning it was slippery and I was driving slow through my urban homegrounds. Once on the highway, I could drive normally until 20 km before my destination. The snow did not yet leave the country and I just caught up with it :-).
In the end I was only 25 minutes later at my work than normally, while the north of Holland and the southeast was completely struck with a traffic cardiac arrest. Even the trainsystem was not functioning any more... I was glad I did not took the train that day :-)
In Woensdrecht there was a nice layer of snow covering all the aircraft... For a real aviation enthusiast that was a wonderful sight!
At the end of the day, all the traffic jams were not on my highways so I embarked again for a trip through a winter wonderland :-) When I finally came home, the roads near my house were slippery and you could feel the car sliding.
But what a wonderful sight, all that snow!! Woohooo!! I am really lokking forward to my skiing and snowboard trips that I have planned!!
