Lately I've been thinking, there is so much Canadian music, television and film that never makes it outside of the Great White North. Only a small fraction of what is actually produced makes it into mainstream US or Western popular culture, so I thought every now and then I would post something fun to highlight things people from other countries might not have seen.
Last week I posted some Canadian indie music, and this morning I randomly found another song I hadn't heard in years. It's by a band called Sandbox, and the guitarist ended up going on to portray Bubbles in the hit television series "Trailer Park Boys". Please find clips below, and please let me know if this is something you'd be interested in seeing.
Sandbox - Curious
Bubbles - Kitties are so nice
This is a funny video; it's also a lot tamer than most of the other videos on Youtube you will find by Bubbles. A warning, if you click on any of the other Bubbles links, you will find explicit material.
Our good friend Putri recently visited her native land of Indonesia to host the Indonesian University Tour. It was a tremendous success and everyone here at Opera was incredibly proud of her.
She returned to the office this week and it was great to see her. Being the thoughtful young lady that she is, she also brought me a special present..... a Starbucks Jakarta coffee mug!
It's very stylish, and plus, it's Starbucks I love Starbucks, as most people around me will know.... I grew up on the West Coast of Canada, where Starbucks are incredibly common. It was always a great place to sit and relax with friends, so it kind of became very central in my life. Plus, frappuccino is the greatest drink ever invented.
Here's an awesome photo of Putri pouring the first cup of sjokolade into my new Starbucks mug. Thanks Putri!
For the past while I've felt a tad homesick. Norway is a great place, but after 10 months away, I really started to long for some of the things I'm used to in Canada.
It really helps your homesickness if you allow yourself to indulge in some things from home. For me, that's largely music. In particular, I really started to get into some mid 90's Canadian indie music. I thought I would share some of that here, and see what people think of my slightly obscure (at least in an international perspective) tastes!
Age of Electic - I Don't Mind
These guys came out of Saskatchewan in the early 90's. Something about the music just sounds simple to me, though I'm by no means an expert of technical analysis of music. It just sounds clean, and incredibly happy and uplifting. Can't help but smile when I hear it!
Salmon Blaster - Freeway
The first thing you might ask about this band is - what the hell is a Salmon Blaster? And honestly, I still wonder that. Salmon is a very common fish in parts of Canada, so I suppose that might influence the name..... And maybe these guys had interesting ideas of things to do with majestic fish... Regardless of name, these guys from Ontario made one catchy album of slightly hard, poppy sounding music.
Killjoys - Today I Hate Everyone
Not even sure where they are from, but I like the sound. And, I think everyone has the type of day they are singing about once in a while
Anyways, just thought I would share a few videos. Hopefully you like them!
A little different from the typical ferry ride a British Columbian might be used to, the Stena Line Cruise from Oslo to Frederikshavn offers a really cool experience including private cabins, casinos, gourment buffets, nightclubs, duty free shopping. That kind of puts White Spot hamburgers and uncomfortable seats to shame....
Anyways, I am really glad I was able to take the cruise last weekend. It really is something Canadians do not have access to at home.
