My Name Is Eric

Will It Validate?

I was reading a post by NODATA on the Campus Crew blog and found it intersting how easy it is to see if a website validates in Opera. All you have to do is right click on the page and select validate. The site will then be checked in the W3C's validation tool and you'll know how many errors a site has. I thought it would be fun to check out some of the more popular sites I use.

www.tsn.ca/nhl - FAIL 23 errors, 6 warnings

www.canada.com - MASSIVE FAIL 631 errors, 40 warnings

www.aircanada.com - FAIL 143 errors, 25 warnings

www.canoe.ca - FAIL 46 errors

www.bmo.com - FAIL 102 errors, 66 warnings

www.tdcanadatrust.com - FAIL 21 errors, 21 warnings

www.canada.gc.ca - PASS!

www.bcferries.com - FAIL - 25 errors, 19 warnings

www.canucks.com - FAIL - 147 errors, 89 warnings

www.uvic.ca - PASS

Try it out yourself. It's kind of interesting and a little addictive!

Did you do that on purpose?

Espen André Øverdahl 6. February 2009, 09:33

All Web sites fail on W3C now. It's not our fault. All our sites validate.

Edit: It's our fault, or more specific... It's Opera's fault. Damn. If you validate by right clicking it fails. If you manually enter the URI on W3C it passes.

Hm, this is a nasty bug and has to be fixed. Strange.

Hm... Did a bit more investigation. The sites who validate seem completely random now. I'm getting dizzy because of this... Weirdness happen.

I'm now testing in different Opera versions.

Didn't do that on purpose, although I wish I would have! ERIC FAIL

I'm actually kind of confused as to why it's not validating.... but Espen is on the case

EspenAO; this page failed because of what ehoppe put in his link - the code is incorrect - OC would've validated if it weren't for that.

I just validated one of my domains by right-clicking and it passes. My blog would pass, if it weren't for the YouTube embed code not validating.

The feature works fine - there's just lots of broken sites. :P

Fixed. :D

Micheál Seosamh 11. February 2009, 15:29

 What had to be done to fix it?

Matt Cox 12. February 2009, 12:07

He'd closed an A tag twice. :)

 So he was using html instead of BBCode for his links?

Matt Cox 12. February 2009, 17:38

Yeah, I prefer writing posts in HTML too; I have more control that way! :D
