Real Madrid Vs FC Barcelona

, , ,

The rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona is legendary. From the start the clubs were seen as representatives of the two rival regions of Spain, Castile and Catalonia, as well as the two cities themselves. However the rivalry reached a new level during the Generalísimo Francisco Franco years when Real Madrid was considered to be the "regime team" while FC Barcelona was regarded as the team of the opposition.
Although following the Spanish Civil War Real Madrid received considerable institutional assistance from the Franco regime, as he saw the club as the sporting embodiment of the Spain he wanted to create, during the war itself members of both clubs suffered at the hands of Franco supporters. FC Barcelona president Josep Sunyol was murdered while Real Madrid president Rafael Sánchez Guerra, a prominent Republican, was imprisoned and tortured. They also arrested and murdered a Real vice-president and club treasurer and an acting president disappeared.
The rivalry was given a significant boost by the 1943 Copa del Generalísimo semi-final between the two clubs. The first leg at Les Corts ended in a 3-0 loss for Real, but the return leg in Madrid saw them win 11-1. It has been alleged by some that the FC Barcelona players were pressured into losing the game. The dispute over Alfredo Di Stéfano in the 1950s intensified the rivalry further.
There is no doubt that Franco benefited from Madrid's achievements in Europe and used the club for propaganda purposes. On the football field, however, both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have enjoyed success throughout their history, both in Spain and in Europe, regardless of who led the government.

Zinedine Zidane
An awesome player with immense talent, so much that, it made him a playing legend. Having previously won both the European and World Footballer of the Year awards, Zidane was voted the #1 European player of the past 50 years in UEFA's Jubilee poll. Recently Zidane announced retirement from football after the 2006 World Cup. It was a shock to the Madrid faithfuls. Zidane was quoted as saying in the programme before his last match at the Santiago Bernabeu against Villarreal,

I've really enjoyed these five years (in Real), there have been some bad times, but it will be the good ones I will always remember. I came here hoping to win the European Cup and I can leave happy as I have done that. I've got great memories of that game and I also had the good luck to score that goal in Glasgow. I'll never forget that moment. My departure forms part of football, I'm not afraid of retirement. I'm proud of my career because I've played with two of the biggest teams, Real Madrid and Juventus, and I've won a lot of trophies. I've always been a very competitive player and done all I can to win and I haven't been doing that recently. I'm retiring because I can no longer offer Real Madrid Zidane at 100 percent.

Zidane will play his last match for Real Madrid in next week's league match at Sevilla before hooking up with the France squad for the World Cup, which starts on June 9. I guess it is finally time to say bye bye Zizou.

Player of the Day - Raúl González

, , ,

A natural finisher who started out as a midfield player, Raúl González's predatory instincts, unstinting desire and exemplary scoring record mark him out as the golden boy of Spanish football.

National team
Since making his international debut against the Czech Republic in October 1996, Raúl has become Spain's leading scorer of all-time with more than 40 goals. Brilliant in qualifying tournaments, he missed a penalty in the last minute of the UEFA EURO 2000™ quarter-final against France as Spain went home early. Touted as a potential star of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he began well enough, scoring three goals, but a groin injury ruled him out of the quarter-final with the Korean Republic which Spain lost on penalties. The Spanish captain was a central figure in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2004™, appearing in ten games and scoring in both play-off matches against Norway, although he failed to score in the finals in Portugal. Remains a leader under Luis Aragonés.

Club
Born in the capital, Raúl started out with Club Atlético de Madrid. Yet the fact he replaced Real Madrid CF great Emilio Butragueño on his top-flight debut at the age of 17 gave a clear indication of things to come. Raúl is the highest scorer still active in Spain's Primera División, having finished top of the Pichichi charts in 1999 and 2001. He is certainly a big-match performer, having hit the third goal in Madrid's victory against Valencia CF in the 2000 UEFA Champions League final, another in the 2002 final win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and the clincher against CR Vasco da Gama in the 1998 European/South American Cup. Raúl's form dipped following EURO 2000™ but he rediscovered his touch to finish top scorer in the Champions League for two years running, and won a Spanish championship in 2003. The following season, he had one spell of almost three months without a league goal and scored just twice in the Champions League, though he did sign a new long-term contract.

2004/05: Raúl was not the force of old but was a tireless worker. Scored nine times in the league, including a strike against eternal rivals FC Barcelona in a 4-2 home win on 10 April.

Did you know?
Raúl's contract, which runs until 2010, reportedly has a buy-out clause of €180m.

Los Galacticos

, ,

Real Madrid CF is one of the richest football clubs in the world. With its base in the Spanish Capital Madrid, it is one of the most succesfull clubs in European Football History. It has won the European Champions Clubs' Cup five times (in the seasons 1955/56, 1956/57, 1957/58, 1958/59, 1959/60, and 1965/66), the UEFA Champions League in 1997/98, 1999/00, 2001/02, the EUSA Cup in the seasons 1960, 1998, 2002, the UEFA Super Cup in 2002 and the UEFA Cup in 1984/85, 1985/86. It has also won the domestic league and cup titles several times. It plays its home games at the Santiago Bernabeu, the third largest stadium in the world. Its rivalry with the catalan giants FC Barcelona is one of the fiercest. The match between Real and Barca is known as El Classico (translated as The Classic). The title 'Los Galacticos' meaning 'the Galaxy' was got when former president of Real, Florentino Perez, signed some of the biggest icons of world football like Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo (currently in Internazionale FC), Luiz Ronaldo and David Beckham. Along with home-grown talent like Raúl González (the top scorer in UEFA Champions League history) Iker Casillas, José Maria Guti and Fernando Morientes (currently in Liverpool FC) Real formed one of the best playing units in the world. Legends like Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Ivan Zamorano and Fernando Hierro have all been a part of Real's great history.
Their Squad currently looks like this....
Iker Casillas, Diego López, Michel Salgado, Roberto Carlos, Sergio Ramos, Iván Helguera, Cicinho, Raúl Bravo, Jonathan Woodgate, Carlos Diogo, Paco Pavón, Alvaro Mejía, Miñambres, Zinedine Zidane, Julio Baptista, Pablo García, Guti, Thomas Gravesen, David Beckham, Raúl, Ronaldo, Robinho, and Cassano
And these are the members of their staff....
Head Coach : Juan Ramón López Caro, Reserve Team Coach: Juanjo Maqueda, Physical Trainer: Pau Albertí, Goalkeepers Coach: Pedro Jaro, President: Fernando Martín.

Now, Real Madrid is going through a bad patch. The fact that the club has not won a single trophy in the past two seasons has added to the fans agony. With young talent like Robinho, Sergio Ramos, Julio Baptista, Cicinho, and Jonathan Woodgate the club is expected to perform well in the upcoming seasons. Though its current form does not prove anything good about the club, we should not forget that it is still second in the Spanish Primera Liga (the Spanish League). I am sure that the Galcticos will bounce back stronger than ever and demolish any challenge which is put in front of them.
