Merry Christmas

Peace on Earth!

Lightning

McLeans Ridges, NSW - 3 December 2008

thinking that the earth is hit almost 100 times by lightning each and every second,
I shouldn't complain about the crazy lighting we got this summer,
(and it is not over yet)...
well I will still talk about it since this summer the weather is crazy!
I do not know if it is due to the global warming ,
but for sure it is not normal!
we get either 90+ F temperatures ,
or rain ,
and thunder
and lightning...
this YouTube video shows lightning in a very slow motion...
I find it fascinating to watch
and I hope you will too!
Please stay safe,
never find cover under a tree when it thunders,
and please get out of the sea
or lake when you hear the first thunder...
stay safe
and enjoy the rest of your summer

Looks fascinating! Really weird.

Talking about weird, that video is acting weird with me too.

Oh and also don't use an umbrella when there is lightning
And don't go stand in the middle of a empty field

PainterWoman 16. August 2009, 17:59

Lightening is indeed fascinating to watch. We have a lot of it here during our monsoon type thunderstorms. Sometimes it is so bright at night, the entire inside of my house lights up with a bluish white light. Frightening! Although, this summer, we've only had two.

A high percentage of our forest fires are started by lightening.

Kitty 16. August 2009, 18:08

Whoa, that's fascinating indeed. Fascinating and beautiful!

Charles Schloss 16. August 2009, 18:35

I saw the link and thought this would be shocking, and it was

Olga 16. August 2009, 18:36

Im not a child but I am still afraid of lightening and cover my head with blanket if it happens at night!

Dacotah 16. August 2009, 18:54

Enjoy the rest of the summer to Angeliki.

Edward Piercy 16. August 2009, 19:39

I'm sure Pam can back me up on this, but when I was in Arizona they had lightning that went from bottom (earth) to top (sky) instead of top to bottom.

Kinda crazy. Of course, all lightning is pretty crazy. But I've always loved watching it. A free sound and light show!

Allan 16. August 2009, 19:41

I have learned that lightnings always travel from ground to cloud - because the positive electron load always is on the ground. But things move so fast that we can't tell the difference anyway.

I think that is called ground to cloud lightning

Jurjen 16. August 2009, 19:49

That's not that crazy. The lightning goes two ways actually.
This is from wikipedia:

When a stepped leader approaches the ground, the presence of opposite charges on the ground enhances the strength of the electric field. The electric field is strongest on ground-connected objects whose tops are closest to the base of the thundercloud, such as trees and tall buildings. If the electric field is strong enough, a conductive discharge (called a positive streamer) can develop from these points. This was first theorized by Heinz Kasemir. As the field increases, the positive streamer may evolve into a hotter, higher current leader which eventually connects to the descending stepped leader from the cloud. It is also possible for many streamers to develop from many different objects simultaneously, with only one connecting with the leader and forming the main discharge path. Photographs have been taken on which non-connected streamers are clearly visible.[21] When the down and up leaders meet, the flow of electric current greatly increases and not decreases.

Once a channel of ionized air is established between the cloud and ground this becomes a path of least resistance and allows for a much greater current to propagate from the Earth back up the leader into the cloud. This is the return stroke and it is the most luminous and noticeable part of the lightning discharge.

Cool stuff :D

Edward Piercy 16. August 2009, 20:33

But Zeus throws his thunderbolts DOWN from Mt. Olympus. What about that one, huh?

p:

Allan 16. August 2009, 20:38

Oh, yes. That's right. Can't argue against that.

Edward Piercy 16. August 2009, 20:43

I suppose the lightning I saw in Arizona must be the bolts rebounding off the earth after being thrown down from Olympus.

Jurjen 16. August 2009, 20:46

I think it's Thor with his hammer!

Edward Piercy 16. August 2009, 21:04

Hmmm. Yet another possiblity.

Charles Schloss 16. August 2009, 21:09

Waits for the list of figures who have used lightning

Stardancer 16. August 2009, 21:14

Proxpyro -- they must be sons of Zeus! That's all that means.

And what else does Zeus do when he is pissed off at one of his girlfriends? That's why we have so many storms. Lotta misbehavin girlfriends!

Charles Schloss 17. August 2009, 02:52

Angeliki 17. August 2009, 02:59

I'm sorry to spoil the joy. Somehow I hate Pokemon, Pikachu included. I never understood the fun of those series... :worried:
I know I'm barbaric!

Btw, It's is really amazing how many people are being struck by lightning every year. Also amazing that most people survive! :eyes:

If the Pikachu has a heart on the tail, it is a female. If no heart, then male.

The Pikachu you think of is probably Ash's, and that is a boy.
