Merry Christmas

Peace on Earth!

memories from the 80's

sometimes comments of some of my Opera friends remind me of my High School Years in the 80's

i.e..
my opera friend Eddie,
a.k.a. Ed Piercy, loves retro pictures like this one
in the 80's I used
to go to the movies and select a movie theater that would run two for the price of one
it was a must! I got to love old movies...

my opera firend Matthew,
a.k.a. Noahcounte, did a post on ska.
"Ska" music is not widely know to Greeks but ,
I was fortunate to have a friend artist who was born and raised
in Jamaica.
He moved to Greece when he met a young Greek girl on a Cruise ship,
and they fall in love.
The relationship failed but he stayed in Greece.
We used to go at night in small cafes which were actually old houses rented..
Here is a poster like the ones that were outside
the old houses that was rented by artists
and "ska', among other kind of music ,
could be heard in the very alive Greek Night:

of course if live music wasn't available to me,
or I was very broke,
my friends and I,
used to go to the music stores and just
make our voice heard
to the horror of the music store owners

In the 80's I started cooking and baking,
I still remember my classmates visiting,
and eating most of the food in our refrigerator
teen years can make young kids very hungry !

my favorite thing to cook was Greek meatballs,
I was still meat eater those days ...not any more

http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/greek_meatballs/

in the 80's I had an awful choice for boyfriends, awful!
I was then into looks and
into the bank accounts,
I did get my share of heart aches,
and then I promised I would become a nun! p:
It took me a decade to meet Michael
and fall in love all over again !!

no more errors in my love life after that,
but I got the idea of moving to America!I was dreaming of living in the USA,
which eventually I did!
My idea of life in American came from soap operas and the TV shows shown in Greek TV channels ..
I thought my work would pay me sooooooooo big ,
that I would have my first million within a year!
oy! was I ever wrong!

I am leaving you with the 10 songs of the 80's

I liked Duran, Duran. Does that make me a failure? Or a freak?:D I still do not know what ska music is. Will have to google that when I am more alert. Enjoyed the retro posters, Angeliki.

So, how long did it take you to make your first million? hahaha

Dacotah 20. August 2009, 06:14

WOW, good post Angeliki.
The meatballs look great.

Kittylicious 20. August 2009, 06:14

How cool you should make a 80s post today, I did too! Well, it's not the same, obviously, it's just a funny coincidence!

I was a little bit disappointed with the Youtube thing. I mean... I had expected to actually hear bits of the music. awww

 @ the nun thing! P:

scott cumming 20. August 2009, 06:33

i gathered the recipe. trying it out this weekend, meli

the 10 songs have been usurped by what one angry commenter calls elevator music. sorry.

nice little personal story, which i appreciated.

Dr. John v. Kampen 20. August 2009, 07:41

Yes, you as as a nun with delicious meatballs and old rockers. In the 80 I was in California figuring out how the first Mac could work on some nifty OS, how to get printers and publishers to use desktop publishing. Time to earn a lot of money and have a great deal of fun. However I think each epoch has its advantages and drawbacks. Time enough still to get a monk...

:drunk:

Darko 20. August 2009, 08:17

 @ Windows warning

Jurjen 20. August 2009, 09:55

Nice story Angel!

"no more errors in my love life after that,"

I don't know about that, just yesterday you said no to a very hot guy with a beard, fancy clothes, relations with the royal family... Well you know who i'm talking about! That was kind of a failure :D p:

Charles Schloss 20. August 2009, 14:53

 loved that error message AND the story about you and your friends making your voices heard in the music stores.

I don't remember Duran Duran much because I think I was too busy taking kids around to different things. I know the radio was on but I wasn't paying attention to who was singing.

I WILL try those meatballs. I used to use a Swedish meatball recipe all the time which called for a can of soup, plus other things. Everyone in the family liked it.

dbshadow(Deacon Blue) 20. August 2009, 18:14

The variety of music available in the "80's was unequaled, I was traveling as a Tech Rep with Sony that decade and got to hear a lot of local music, but I had to try hard to avoid DISCO. But "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band", the movie, was a bright spot. (Aerosmith, The BeeGees, and Baldy.
:hat:  wine

Edward Piercy 20. August 2009, 19:05

I kept waiting for the 80s music! Instead it kept playing Stan Kenton or WTF!

p:
LMAO.

Okay, he's an 80s one for you to dance to. Put on your red shoes and dance the blues, Angeliki!

Angeliki 21. August 2009, 03:52

*dances to the tune* w0000h000000 !!!!!!!!!!!

:o: thanks

fineolwine 21. August 2009, 03:54

I have LP by Men at Work, and also one by Men in Hats. I loved the names some of the bands used. Global in the 80s. Bands were popular from all over the world---England, Australia and Proclaimers were Scottish band.

The strange thing is, I enjoy the 80s music now more than I did in the 80s. I was a dyed-in-the-wood hard rock fan.
