Cacti

from small, to "proud", to "dangerous", to ....... A small story of cacti in pictures :D

Joke: A Coyote Cactus?
A city boy went out West to visit his old Uncle, miles from anywhere, on a big ranch with mostly sand and cactus.
After the sun went down they went to bed, and it was so dark the boy was afraid. As he lay there he heard a mournful, otherworldly sound.
Frightened, he called out to the old Uncle, There's werewolves! I hear werewolves"!
"That's rubbish, Boy. Ain't no sech thing", his Uncle answered.
"Then it must be man-eating wolves"!
"No. we don't have those either. Now go to sleep"!
The sound started again.
"Then, what is it"? he called out, terrified.
"They're only coyotes".
"Coyotes? What's that"?
"They're a lot like dogs. In fact, you can consider them a kind of dog".
"Then why are they making this horrible noise"?
" See, Boy, we ain't got many trees around here,. We got Cactuses"!

As a child I remember backing away from a snake and finding several dozen cacti spines in my backside. Taught me to look before I backed, of course none of our wild cacti had any of those shapes.:insane:  :cat:

Angeliki 9. October 2009, 02:45

Willis! I am glad the thorns were in the back only!

Texas Cactus Hot Sauce... My review: nice. Hot, but not too hot. Sweet, but not too sweet. I'd eat it on fried fish, if i ate fish. Or maybe fried chicken, if I ate chicken. As it is, I had it on rice, and on the advice of a friend, I will soon have it on pizza. :D

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 03:31

somehow hot ready sauces give me swollen lips more and faster than the fresh vegetables!

Cactus or cacti. Late at night on I-10, between Phoenix and the California line... the big Segouros would catch the headlites... you would swear they were moving!

scott cumming 9. October 2009, 04:44

meli
this is a very suggestive exposure of cacti. me being in the land of cacti marvel sometimes at their shapes and sizes. one house on my walk to the local starbucks where i sit and write has a wonderful collection of cacti. the variety always stops me in my tracks.
my absolute favorite is the night booming cereus. it has an aromatic bouquet and looks like a white lotus.

it sounds like a delicious smell , meli

scott cumming 9. October 2009, 05:40

yes, the perfume of the cereus is light and not too sweet.

you know, thanks to my mother sending me a stained glass artifact which said, literally, "take the time to smell the flowers.", i always put my nose to the quick of any blossoms i come across. the one that gets me the most is the full blown rose... i am always transported to childhood when i smell the summer roses.

Kitty 9. October 2009, 05:45

What an awful lot of... cacti... :eyes:

Have a fantastic weekend.

isn't life worth "smelling the roses?" Many times I forget myself ,I might need to buy something to remind me too

I have hard time with smells,I never wore strong perfumes.
I also love the natural smell of the human body.
Pheromone plays a great percentage if I am attracted to man or not ,greater than his titles, or income by far ...

How come I have never seen this sauce in Texas? It must be made in New York City, like the Pace Picante Sauce knock-off.

scott cumming 9. October 2009, 06:03

i dare anyone to just try jamaican 'piccappeppa sauce' taste it once on anything and you will not be able to live without it. don't worry, it's not a burning sensation just a mouth watering one. so delicious on shishkabob, on beans and rice.

Linda 9. October 2009, 06:43

Thanks for the link Angeliki. I will look around some of our stores to see if I might possibly find some of these products, but have never noticed them before.

We have a person here in Tyler who makes tamales and sells them in the real corn shucks. Very good too.

I hope we hear more about this if you do!
I bought an amazing Texan BBQ sauce for the kids (I never liked BBQ sauce myself ).
It is called Caroline's BBQ Rub. They say it is the best!

Angeliki 9. October 2009, 12:45

@ Tamil,

 I am glad I gave you a laugh or two !

Jurjen 9. October 2009, 14:54

"fries with mayo is not included."

:frown:

As long as you're not using Ketchup with your fries :yuck:
Or no fries at all?

PainterWoman 9. October 2009, 15:47

What a great bunch of funny cacti photos. Arizona has them in abundance. I've seen the 'old man of the desert' cactus, 2nd photo. It is sometimes called 'hairy man of the desert'. Also the small cacti with the magenta colored flowers. Cacti sometimes have the most beautiful and delicate of flowers, in contrast to their sharp and spiny bodies.

Somewhere I have a photo of one of those night blooming cactus that Scott mentioned. They last less than 24 hours. Once the sun rises in the morning, they begin to wilt.

Mette 9. October 2009, 19:14

Tyler is the "Rose City". I have been there when the roses are in bloom.

Edward Piercy 9. October 2009, 21:06

Those hot sauces do look tempting -- you almost HAVE try a hot sauce called Holy Shit -- but it would be too hot for a bloody mary, you wouldn't want to completely cover over the vodka taste.
