Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Ditto! Love Angelou's poem and the paintings. I've seen most of them in my studies over the years but this is the first time I've read Angelou's poem.

No matter size, shape, form or intellect, I believe that women could excel in promoting peace and making this world a better place.

 Linda I agree on the poem 100% I did read it when my daughter had it in her English class and I encourage High Schools to include it too! so many girls have the wrong or very low self esteem... as for the song, I am sure you will enjoy it too! it is worth listening to.

please feel free, she was an amazing actress , I am glad to have her here  I am not sure if this is Elsa Lanchester but at a time that women found limited jobs in Hollywood, the "Bride of Frankenstein" gave jobs to many of them..1930s were brutal to women ...

I left you last to respond to, somehow I had you in mind when I saw this video, and I knew you would have appreciated.
There are some with music that I did keep the links for a future post, I am so delighted my friends appreciate art as much as I do!

I find Christinas' voice perfect for this one! She also did the singing in my Moulin Rouge video/post

She is such a great inspiration, starting from poverty and being the artist she is today! a fantastic young woman!

"at a time that women found limited jobs in Hollywood, the 1930s were brutal to women ..."

I've never heard anything like that. Look at all the Busbee Berkely musicals they did...women outnumbered men about 100 to 1 in those. And if you look at the main actresses at Movie Maidens there are more actresses listed for the 30s than the 40s.

Not only that, but Lanchester seemed to have a pretty good career both in the 30s and the 40s.

Darko 11. November 2009, 21:14

I am not quite sure what is this post about...

Edward Piercy 11. November 2009, 21:27

BTW I mainly remember Lanchester from her later Disney-type movies. She was always fun.

I tried to find one of the in That Darned Cat, but all I could find was one of Halley Mills in it.

But...it has a cat...so here it is.

Edward Piercy 12. November 2009, 00:25

Well you said "Brutal to women" which in general might have some relevance but we were talking about Lancaster and actresses. As far as the first source goes that only seems to indicate less directing/writing jobs because of the studios moving in and not acting jobs. As for the second source I didn't see anything about actresses and as far as regular jobs A) most of the big gains in women entering the workforce were in the 20s and B) it was the Great Depression.
