Nab some tunes here. This is all stuff I really like, and you may not see every day, or stuff you may not typically think to listen to. I also put up some of my photography. Please check it out here.

If the downloads from that site seem to stump you (I was stumped at first), here is what you have to do. First click on the link from this page.(It probably just says "here")
1) Click on the tab thay says "Free" at the bottom of the list that says Free.

2) You will be redirected to another page. This page has the download, but sometimes you have to wait for the download. It will tell you how long until you can download.

3) If you needed to wait (if you download more than one album in a day), wait the amount of time they told you to, and then hit the refresh button. If you havent waited long enough, then the time will have decreased.
4) A password will apear next to the box. Type the password in...Download. It is a zip. or something, so you have to have a program that will unzip it. I think most computers have these nowaday.

These files get erased if nobody downloads them within 30 days, so if you see something you like, get it while you can.

RIP Joseph Hill

Joseph Hill of Culture passed away on August 19, 2006. A sad day.

I met the man several times.....He will be missed. A humble man who lived his word, and was genuine. I have some good memories of him. He was so down to earth.....I think I will refrain from writing about my experiences and memories of him for now. I will wait until I feel like I can compose them in the propper manner. RIP, Jah Live.

From the Culture website....

JOSEPH HILL (1949-2006)

On August 19 the reggae world lost one of its most prominent figures. Joseph Hill, the leader of the veteran reggae group, Culture unexpectedly passed away from a sudden illness. At the time, the group was in Berlin, Germany at the mid-point of a European tour.

Recently, Hill had received a number of honors - including an induction into the Jamaican Reggae Walk of Fame and a 2005 Independence Award presented by the Prime Minister of Jamaica. This year the group continued to draw rave reviews with typically upbeat performances at the 'Bob Marley 61st Birthday Celebration' in Ghana and 'Reggae Sunsplash 2006'.

Joseph Hill will probably be best remembered for the impact Culture had on the reggae scene when they first appeared in 1976. During this period the group had a string of highly successful singles for producers Joe Gibbs and Sonia Pottinger. Perhaps most well known was the song 'Two Sevens Clash' which, due to its infectious rhythm and apocalyptic imagery, left a lasting impression on both Jamaicans and UK punks. The 'Two Sevens Clash' album was a landmark in reggae music and was named by Rolling Stone magazine in 2002 as one of the '50 Coolest Records' - the only single artist reggae album to make the list. The group also scored a major hit with 'Stop Fussing and Fighting', a song that addressed the chaotic political climate of the late 1970s and the attempt on Bob Marley's life.

Joseph Hill and Culture quickly developed a reputation as a fearsome performing group. The group put in a stunning performance at the 'One Love Peace Concert' in 1978, and was soon regularly touring the United States, Europe and Africa. In recent years the group has not displayed any signs of slowing down as they continued to perform at least one hundred concerts each year - with Hill's wife Pauline performing road manager duties. Fans of the group know that Hill continued to be an electrifying presence on stage - part deejay as he directed his band to reconfigure songs on stage and part teacher as he commented on Jamaican history and current political issues. In his lyrics, Hill often explored how the legacy of slavery continued to have an influence on Jamaican citizens. Yet, what made Culture unique was that Hill always tempered his messages by having a smile on his lips and a dance in his feet. He was never without a good joke at hand.

Growing up in the parish of St. Catherine Jamaica, Joseph Hill has often recounted how he built a homemade drum as a child. He first became involved in the Jamaican music scene as a sound system deejay. By the late 1970s he was performing as a percussionist for the Soul Defenders group who were based out of Linstead. It was with this group (which included such figures as Nana McLean and Vincent Morgan) that Hill made his first recording at Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One - both as a musician and lead singer. Notably, the group backed such Studio One stars as Burning Spear and Dennis Brown.

In the early 70s, Joseph performed with two groups that included future reggae star Glen Washington - C35 Incorporated and Stepping Stone. In 1976, Hill formed the harmony trio Culture with his cousin Albert Walker and Kenneth Dayes. The group immediately struck a chord with audiences by combining sharp social commentary and catchy rhythms. Hill has often noted that the group earned their name Culture. The group gained the reputation as one of the most reliable and enjoyable acts in reggae music. They had a string of memorable albums - most recently the album World Peace for Heartbeat Records in 2003. Significantly, Hill was not content to let Culture be a mere oldies act. In recent years he had recorded duets with Buju Banton and Anthony B., and demonstrated a keen desire to be both faithful to his roots and a contemporary artist. Joseph Hill was remarkable for his ability to simultaneously look backward and forward. He will be greatly missed by both Culture fans and the reggae community.

Condolences go out to Pauline Hill, Kenyatta Hill, the entire Hill family, Albert Walker, Telford Nelson, long time agent George Michailow and the numerous musicians who formed the backing groups Dub Mystic, Moja Nya and Forces of Justice.

Who's there.....It's DJ WoodenMan!!!

I am really excited about this. What we have here, is a failure to communicate.....no wait, that was GnR. What we have here is a compilation of German Hip-Hop. This was contributed by DJ WoodenMan, who I met in my gay little chat room that I have for this page. He is a really cool guy, and he is into the Hip-Hop. He wanted to share some stuff from his homeland of Germany. Shit, all I knew about it before was brats and beers. I went to Busch Gardens one time, and they have German-land. Also, a girl I fell in love with a girl who went to Germany, and came back a changed person. She went to a land where they have castles, and when she came back things weren't the same. It was pretty tough for me. I still believe that she is....well, let's just say, that I think of her every day, and she means the world to me. But she probably wouldn't really know that now. I have had to distance myself from her a little bit. (Wow, that sounds stalker, and rediculous, but it's not like that, we are still friends.) Anyway, this is about German Hip-Hop, not German heartbreak. I guess it's German beatbreak, and shit, maybe it is about German heartbreak. I can't understand what the fuck these guys are saying. I guess most good songs are about or for a woman. I've only written and recorded one song with lyrics and all, and it was for a woman. (See above) This stuff seems pretty good though. I first heard German flow on the DJ Nu-Mark CD "Hands On", and I was intruiged. To be honest. I just got this DJ WoodenMan thing the other day, and I've listened to it, but I haven't really sat down with just the stereo and me. On first listen, my favorite was Max Herre (#8). So I will wait until I do to give a proper review. For now, here are the tracks.

1) Kool Savas - 16 2
2) Justus Jonas feat. Kool Savas - Zeichentrick
3) Max und Afob - Exklusiveinterview
4) Huss und Hodn - Interview
5) Massive Töne - Unterschied
6) DJ Ara feat. Kool Savas - Neongelb
7) Freundeskreis feat. Wasi - Wenn der Vorhang fällt
8) Max Herre - King vom Prenzlauer Berg
9) Justus Jonas, Kool Savas & Taktloss - Gegen die Kultur
10) Westberlin Maskulin - Chillin Killin
11) MOR - Bei Mir
12) Bruda Sven - Bist und warst
13) Curse - Zehn Rap Gesetze
14) Spezializtz feat. Afrob - Afrokalypse
15) Afrob - Prime Time
16) Azad - Phoenix
17) Plattenpapst feat. Kool Savas - King of Rap

Big up to DJ WoodenMan....

Portishead - Dummy

This is the first upload that I have used sendspace for. It seems to be better than rapidshare> I guess a lot of people hate rapidshare. I suppose I will use sendspace for a while, and see how it works. If someone would like ot suggest something else, send me a message.

Anyway, this album is really moody. There is really no way to describe it without using that word. It is also solid. She does a great job with the vocals, and I don't really feel like writhing about it. Go to amazon.com or some other music site, and you will see a bunch of reviews.(most of which use the word moody) Instead, today, I write about "The Peanut Butter Solution". It was an old 80's movie that my brother and I used to watch. I only had vauge memories of it. One scene in particular where the little kid is walking down the street, and he is afraid to step on the ants, so he walks on his tip toes. So I ordered it off of the internet,a nd am going to send it to my brother for his birthday. I jsut watched it, and....spoilers....The general story is that this kid goes into a burnt down/haunted house that homeless people used to sleep in. He gets scared by something, and falls out of a window of the house, and down a garbage chute. He passes out, and his sister caries him home. He wakes up, and he looses his hair. The doc says that it is because he got so scared. He gets really embarrased, and doesn't want to go to school. He gets a visit from some ghosts (the homeless man and woman in the house), and they give him the peanut butter solution, that will make all his hair grow back. It has all types of gross stuff like dead flies, and dogshit or somehting. He makes is, but he puts in too much peanut butter because his first batch is not thick enough. So then he wakes up, and his hair grows uncontrolably. They make him leave school because his buddy has to cut it all the time, and it gets in the way. His art teacher kidnaps him, and uses his hair to make brushes and other stuff. He also kidnaps other kids to run the warehouse that he uses to make the hair brushes. Overall, it is an odd movie, and would never be made today, but that was a different time in movie making. So there you have it. I go now.

Oh yeah, and the music was done by the wonderfull Celine Dion.

And also, I can't track if anyone is downloooding with the sendspace, so the comments are neat.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - The Sameness of Difference

I have seen lots of live music, and I have very rarely been as impressed as I was with a abassist as I was with Reed Mathis of the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. The other two guys are great as well. I saw them in NYC at the Blue Note, and loved every second of it. They did a lot of cool covers, some of which are also on this album. I remember loosing it when they played Hapiness and The Spark That Bled. Funny...actually I was walking back from the bathroom when they were playin The Spark That Bled, and I made a motion to my friend and was all "Hey...Holy Shit". Then I realized that I was at a jazz concert, and this wasn't very appropriate. Very much like in the song. (If you listen to the Flaming Lips version you will understand) So anyway, this album is great. The JFJO tunes are great, but the unique covers are really what make it. Here is the track list...

* Have You Ever Been To Electric Ladyland (Hendrix)
* Slow Breath, Silent Mind
* Isobel (Bjork)
* The Maestro
* Santiago
* Fables of Faubus (Mingus)
* The Spark That Bled (Flaming Lips)
* Don't Let It Bring You Down (N. Young)
* In Your Own Sweet Way (D. Brubeck)
* Davey's Purple Powerline
* Halliburton Breakdown
* Wonderful (Brian Wilson)
* Happiness Is A Warm Gun (Live) (Beatles)

and here is a sweet picture of Reed Mathis...

and here is the dowlnoad.

One More Root From The Reggae Tree

Jacob Miller - I'm Just A Dread

Jacob Miller from Inner Cirlce is one of my favorite reggae artist. He is a character. Just check out his performance in the 1978 film Rockers. I love the part where he is eating, and doesn't want to share. It makes me laugh. His voice is quite unique. I guess when most people hear Inner Circle, they think "Bad Boys" aka the Cops theme. This is nothing like that. In fact, it has always bothered me that they still play under the name Inner Circle. I guess I understand. Lots of bands continue to tour under the same name after they loose key members, but it jsut bothers me with IC for some reason. I guess it is because I feel like the Cops theme sucks in comparison to the old Inner Circle stuff. But I guess making it big in the reggae scene is tough, and they want to keep it going, so they keep the name.

Mas Dub

Jah Thommas Meets The Roots Radics - Dubbing (1999)

A little more dub for the people. I guess you can tell that I just got into my dub collection. This one is supa-dupa. You have Jah Thomas, an amazing engineer of reggaee sounds. Then you have the Roots Radics (the backing band for Isreal Vibration), who is arguably the best backing band in all of reggae. At least they were at the time of this release.

I really like the work with the horns on this. It is pretty predominant. There are some dancehall beats on this one too. I only like some of the dancehall dubs on this. They are all pretty stripped down. This is one I kinda forgot about until my cousin just came to visit me. He and his baby (with brand new eyes) just came down to visit with his wife. It was quite grand. It reminded me of the days when we would work the icecream shop. It was quite silly, the times we had. There were a lot of shenanigans that went down in the back, and the front, of that store. This was part of the soundtrack for those shenanigans. It also reminds me of Manu. I miss him. He is in Bolivia right now, lending his sweet helping hand. What a good guy. Alright, some of the tracks on this are a little weak, but the ones that are great are muy bueno. I like the the opeing vocals....murder...just now.....earlier....and Communist Dub is one that is enjoy tons. It's another one with vocals. Not that the instumental ones aren't great as well.

Mighty Diamonds Dubs

Planet Mars Dub - The Icebreakers with The Diamonds (1978) and Vital Dub - Well Charged (1977)

So these are two albums of Mighty Diamonds dub. The Vital Dub - Fully Charged is not fully Mighty Diamonds dub, but is mostly dub versions of songs from "Right Time". The music is played by a loose group of the finest Jamaican session men, known collectively as The Revolutionaries ("Vital Dub" is just a name given the Revolutionaries by this particular producer for this particular set). Musicians playing on these tracks include Sly Dunbar, Ansel Collins, Sticky Thompson, Ranchie McLean, Dougie Bryan, Ossie Hibbert, Herman Marquis, and the great Tommy McCook. (mixing courtesy of Ernest Hoo Kim & Ossie Hibbert) The Planet Mars Dub is from the Planet Earth album. The Mighty Diamons are simply credited as the Diamonds. The Icebreakers are the band for this one, and they hit it. It is engineered by Karl Pitterson, who soon became famous for his dub tactics. These are the type of dubs that you can tell were made in one of those Jamacian studio that you see in "Rockers" or "Roots, Rock Reggae". The sound is very raw and pure roots. They are both short and sweet. Not to many tracks, but they are solid.

Drum tone

This is most definitely in my top 5 reggae albums of all time, and that includes all Marley, and everything IV, and all other reggae.

Hugh Mundell - Blackman's Foundation

The tone and mix on reggae drums make all the difference in the album as a whole. If you ask me it can make or break the album. The tone and mix of the drums on this album are on point. From the opening fill to the sweet sound of the hi-hats. And then you have Hugh's sweet sweet voice. I think he was about 16 when this was recorded. This also has some great musicians on it . Like Augustus, Chinna, Horsemouth, and Freddie McGregor. I LOVE this one. It kinda has a dub feel to it, with dublike breakdowns. The album Hugh Mundell - "Hugh Mundell" is one of the greatest dub albums of all time. Unfortnaletly it is also very hard to find. I once had a copy, but I can no longer find it. Oh, well. At least I got to hear it. If you do like dub, and like what you hear here. Check out "Scientist Wins The World Cup". It is some dub from the album "Mundel". So, with no further adis.....Here is the track list and artists....

Doo-Doo-da-doo Da-doo-da-doo-da-doo

The Wu-Tang Soul samples was the most picked up thingy until it got erased, so I thought this might go over pretty well. It is B-Boy Breaks - 12 Original Tunes as Sampled by the Beastie Boys. Again, it is cool to hear where the samples come from on songs that you know so well. And on top of that, the songs themselves are all pretty darn sassy. Someone said to me the other day that they can't listen to beasties beacuse they whine too much. I told them to quit the whinig and enjoy the music. This person, I came to find out later, had also never heard Check Your Head. (Which I think is the best Beasties album followed closely by Paul's Boutique.) I like when they play thier own instruments. They are pretty talented. If you get a chance to pick up the Criteron Collection Beastie Boys DVD. It was made to test the limits of a DVD. Most of the videos have alternative remixes, camera angles, and other extras, that you can change in the middle of the video. And all of the videos are awesome, even on thier own. I think my favorite is the 3 MC's and 1 DJ video they did for it. It is shot live. MMM comes in off of the street with a jammy pack on, and a single record in his hand (no sleeve). The whole time he is walking down the street, and down into the basement of the building, the b-boys are standing still, in a triple hi-5 stance. The camera flips back and forth the whole time. (You can control this on the DVD. You can even set it just to show the turntable) When MixMAstMike comes into the room, he walks to the turntable, cuts the record, the b-boys hit it, and dance around all b-boyish, then it ends. They get back into formation, and MMM grabs his jammy pack and record, and bounces, without a word. Alright now, that I think about it, that is not my favorite, but it is up there. Anyway, here is the tracklist for this samples thing.

Lorens Dance - Idris Muhammad
Put On Train - Gene Harris
Jacob;s Ladder - Cedar Walton
Headless heroes - Eugene McDaniels
I'll Bet You - Funkadelic
Never Let em Say - BallinJack
Root Down - Jimmy Smith
Loose Booty - Sly Stone
Howling For Judy - Jeremt Steig
Rien Ne Va Plus - Funk Factory

DJ ?uestlove

This is a DJ set by DJ ?uestlove from 4/3/03 in Urtech, Holland. The picture here is not from that, but I like it. It gives you a glimpse inside the mind of Senor Questito, which in my opinion is the mind of a masterfull musician. He is quite diverse. Even though he is mostly known for his stuff with The Roots, he can hold it down on the drums with just about anyone. (Check for the new Monday Night Football theme comercials with him, Hank Williams Jr., Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worlell, Chris Burney(Bowling for Soup), Charlie Daniels, Joe Perry, Little Richard, and some others.) Or, if you need proof, check out this set from therootslive.com, where he plays with Herbie Hancock, Pino Pallidino, and Lionel Loueke. I labeled this DJ thingy CD 1-3, but I guess it is really Set 1-3, I don't really know how it would track on CD's, but I'm pretty sure each set fits on a CD. This is a pretty straight up party mix. He doesn't really scratch it up at all. It's mostly mixing, some "jump cuts" between songs, but I think it flows pretty well. He goes through different sections like old school, soul, and a bunch of others. It's all the stuff that you like. I think it may be a straight patch because it sounds really good. Like I said, throw this on at a PARTY, and get down.

Kurious - A Constipated Monkey

This review is straight jacked from ohword.com...
"Of all the golden era rap records that are known to inspire feelings of nostalgia in today’s jaded listener, it is possible that Kurious’ A Constipated Monkey tugs at a b-boy’s heartstrings the hardest. This is not due to its impact or quality, but because Harlem’s Kurious embodies the naturally positive and joyous attitude that is romantically linked to hip-hop of the past. Such qualities are immortalized in his goofy “Walk Like A Duck” video and are nicely complemented by his everyman perspective. Kurious covers standard ground like getting laid, rocking the mic, and sparking L’s, but he also recounts a childhood of poverty and chronicles his longstanding insecurities with a great measure of humility. Like Biggie or Ice Cube, his music is memorable because of its blunt honesty; unlike some of his increasingly obsolete peers he can engage in raw self-expression without adopting a disingenuous gangster or pimp persona.

While “Nikole” is a frank, innocent expression of romantic frustration that even the Pharcyde would be hard-pressed to pull off, listeners should not view the endearing humanity of this album as a sign of weakness. Kurious carves a comfortable niche for himself alongside crony Kadi’s account of “the bitches that fuck then swallow the nut” and MF Grimm’s talk of a nine-milimeter handgun looking pretty when pressed up against a foe’s skull. A Constipated Monkey’s many guest collaborations do not result in cutting sessions because Kurious and company work off of each other to create cohesive songs. The album is held together by the production, which comes primarily from the Beatnuts and the Stimulated Dummies, although the album’s standout, the reflective “I’m Kurious,” is a creation of Pete Nice and Daddy Rich of 3rd Bass fame. For the most part the beats are not mind-blowing, but they are all warm and organic, as is the rhyming. A Constipated Monkey is an uncontrived feel-good album, and for this reason it is remembered fondly today even if it remains overshadowed by several other 1994 releases"

Again, I wrote a whole review, and I lost it. I will sum up. I used to listen to this as a young one, and loved it. People say this is the roots of punk. I kinda agree, but don't like that. I guess it is more of the attitude than the sound. It reminds me of an old Radiohead more than old punk. The fully loaded has some good extra's on it that the origional didn't. I just wish that this had more stuff with Mo Tucker on the drums. Apparently they just had whoever was in the studio that could play drums play on this album. The only thing with Mo on it is the extra, "I'm sticking with you, which is "cute". Anyway, this is just the first CD of the "Fully Loaded" thingy. The other one is alternative versions, early versions, and demos. It kinda plays like a making of. This one is moe like an extension of the origonial album.

I thought it was time for some humor, since all of the employees at the lot are complaining about shitty coffee, high quotas, and bad comission. So, her it is. This is definitely not for everyone. the man is pretty darn vulgar. I thought parts of it were weak and old, but some of it was pretty funny. If you are expecting some SNL type stuff, look somewhere else. If words like doo-doo, motherfucker, gag, Marlbro Lights, or cunt offend you, then do not get this. Shakti - Uhhhh, what?

Yeah, I got really into this album for a while. It is another John McLaughlin freak show of amazingness. Like Friday Night in SanFran, this is an all out amazing display of musical ability. It is indian fusion. Here are the musicians.... L. Shankar (violin); John McLaughlin (guitar); Zakir Hussain (tabla); T.S. Vinayakaram (ghatam, mridangam); R. Raghavan (mridangam). Some snobs about indian music don't think that this is all that great, and argue about his tone, and lack of understanding of the music, but I think it is the shit. I was initially intriuged by his guitar. It has seven strings that go diagonally across the face of the guitar, that are drone strings. This gives it that sitar feel. And, from what I understand, the frets are dug out (scalloped), so they are indented indtead of raised. I thought this was really cool, even cooler that a fretless. I guess you can dig your fingers into the fret lines, and get a different tone, and I think it buzzes a little, kinda like the drone strings. I found a link to a page that describes the thing a lot better than I do here. The speed, and interaction between the violin, guitar, and tabla on this is absolutelly amazing. I got a chance to see the Remember Shakti tour in DC, and it was an quite an experience. I loved every second of it. The crowd had an interesting mix of people. There were people who were there for the Indian musicians, people there for John's jazz work, people who were fans of his fusion work with the Mahivishnu Orchestra, and people that were just out to see some good music. Everyone that came definitely did see some good music. Only three tracks, but there all spiffy.

2. Lotus Feet (4:46)
3. What Need Have I For This-What Need Have I For That-I Am Dancing At The Feet Of My Lord... (29:04)

Taj Mahal - A Place I'd Like To Be

This weekend was a great weekend for me. Every year for the past eight years now, we have a memorial golf tournament in honor of my father. It is truly amazing to see how many people come out year after year in his rememberance. Something like this is said every year...."There aren't many people here who will have this many people here to remember them X years after they die." This happens because my father was a truly amazing and selfless person, and because he surrounded himself with wonderfull people. I know a lot of kids have the "my daddy is superman" thing going on, but after they grow up they realize that there were a lot of things about thier father that wasn't super at all. Well, eight years have passed since my father died, and I can still say, with no doubt in my mind, that I think he is the best person I have ever met in my life. He truly was a superman. He taught me a lot, and I still learn a lot from him. I lean about what it means to be a charitable and honest person. I learn this when people that I've know forever and people that I have never met approach me, and tell me a story about a time when my father was there for them, or a time when he made them laugh. Woah, sorry to get all sappy and stuff, but I obviously feel strongly about this. Anyway, my father loved Taj Mahal. I think he owned almost every album that he put out. I grew up listening to it, and it was somewhat of a soundtrack for our fishing trips where we never caught anything, but always ended up having a great time.(Fishing Blues) So, in his honor, here is a live one from Ronnie Scotts in 1988.

Hit the bongo...

Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band.

This shit is badass. Completely rockin' FuNK. It is cool to hear bongos as a lead instrument predominantly throughout the recording. If you liked the Mickey and the Soul Generation, (More of that soon) you will love this. The In A Gadda Da Vida is pretty cool. I was really looking forward to hearing it after I heard what had come before it. Honestly I was a little let down. Not that it isn't fruckin shweet, but the rest of the stuff is just so awesome. I really like this stuff for driving music, when I am on the road by myself.

That's Hot

So here it is ladies and gents. The illest shit to hit the streets since Herbie put out Rockit. it's the skank doin skankin reggae. maybe you could call it stanky stank does skanky skank. It's called "Stars Are Blind". It's pretty much been on repeat on my mp3 jawn since I got it. Yet another great performance by Ms. Hiltons mouth. I don't think I have ever heard of anything so great come in her mouth, I mean come out of her mouth before...
that's hot

FUCKING UPDATE PEOPLE

DGQ

SORRY PEOPLE. THIS ONE IS DEFECTIVE. I'LL TRY TO CLEAN IT UP, AND GET IT BACK UP.

This poster is not from the show here, but it is a rad poster, right? I think it may be from a couple days before. it doesn't say the year on it, so I can't really tell. I absolutley love the opening track on this CD. The opening bass line, and the whole freeging thing. Another one where they really tear it up is Slade. The sound on this is pretty darn good. I am listening back to this right now, and realizing that the CD this is from is a little scratched. If someone could please tell me how the download sounds, I would really appreciate it. The precussion on this is probably my favorite part of the whole thing. I guess it may be because typical blugrass music doesn't have the drums, and this is just done so well. He knows just when to use the right fills, and the right drum/instrument/body part, to use. Also, I haven't done any bluegrass/folk music since my first post with the Avett Brothers, which you should definitely get if you like this.

Get it SOON (Hopefully)

K'naan - The Dust Foot Philosopher

This is an awesome album that is straight African Gangster. It is really cool because he uses african beats and rythyms in some of his stuff, and he raps about being from the streets of a different kind. His voice kinda sounds like eminem. But he doesn't talk about being from the streets of the D, it's all about the African ghettos. His flow is very inteligent, and has a really positive message. This was one of those albums that I couldn't wait to hear the next song. The origonal beats and street smart flow really did it for me.

Long time no e-see...

So I had a hard time logging into the page for the longest time. I sent messages to the admin, and all that, with no luck. Finally I realized that I was typing in my screen wrong. I wasn't leaving a space in the right place. So anyway. i should be more ontop of thing for a little while now.

Anyway. I don't have much music on me today, so I'll go with what I got. To get things going again, I'll hooks it first with some more reggae music, incase you liked the SOJA.

Los Pericos - Big Yuyo.

As you can tell by the album cover, it is a pretty mellow one. They definiely hit it on some songs though. I live at the beach right now, and this one is perfect for the hammock. Most of it is sung in Spanish. This is another one that I searched for a while for, and then finally just ordered off the internet. I'm glad that I did. This is actually another CD that was often played at the all night BBQ's/Dominoes/Rum&Coke sessions that I have such great memories of. There was a time where I listened to a lot more reggae than I do now. i worked at a shop with my cousin, who listened to almost strictly reggae. We got to play what we wanted, and had a 100 CD changer. About 50 of them were reggae (his 50). Actually I had some in there too. Anyway that is all I got on this one. The music is really good. If you got the Sumo and liked it, you will like this. If you don't really like reggae, this might not be for you. Go for the SOJA or IV. Good to be back. I'll try to get as much up this week as I can.

Cinco de Hip-Hop

What!!?!?!!? That's right....Five selections today. Un especial para Cinco de Mayo, mi amigos y amigas.

El primero es el emcee Aesop Rock. Alright, no mas espanol. This is probably my favorite Aesop Rock.

Fast Cars, Danger, Fire, and Knives

This is a very original, different, and bueno hip-hop album. I feel like this album is step up from Bazooka Tooth. This is actually only a 7 song EP, but I think that makes it work. There is no filler, or blatantly weak songs. "Holy Smokes" is a ruthless song that attacks the church. It is brutal. I like think that Aesop can be hard to listen to for some people. Maybe this album would be a good one to start with. I feel like the beats are not quite as abstract. His flow is already abstract enough. This came with a 80 page book that has all of his lyrics from all of his albums, and a bit of cool art. I give this 4 tacos out of 5. If you are a fan, and have his other stuff, you should buy it. If not...

2. Number Nine
3. Zodiacccupuncture
4. Holy Smokes

NEXT!!!

I already have the Hands On, but this is also great.

DJ Nu-Mark and Pomo - Blend Crafters
This is a mostly instrumental album. The open track "Melody" is awesome. The beat!!! ooh that beat. All of the beats actually. Most of this is Nu-Marks stuff. The cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" is on point. The album says Vol. 1 on it. Does that mean that there will be a Vol. 2? I hope so, and I'm sure that you will also, after you hear this. I give this 3.5 sombreros out of 4.75 sombreros. I would get the Hands On first, but if you like instrumental stuff, go for it.

1. Melody
2. Beat the Odds
3. Lola
4. Bad Luck Blues

Prince Paul - Politics of the Buisness.

This is his second album, and I think it is great. Chapelle makes a cameo on this. It's kina funny. I don't feel like writing a review for this one , so I will plagiarize one from some website, and I wont even put that shit in quotes...
Prince Paul has tackled many topics of the streets through his self-produced albums in the past, this time around he tackles the music business. He's assembled a respectable cast of underground hip-hopsters to educate the listener about the ups and downs of the business...the Politics of the Business. He's also got a skit or two to help illustrate (er..make light of) record deals. During one of these skits hip-hop builders Chuck D and Ice T give their two cents worth of advice.

But how's the music you ask? As usual Paul has outdone himself again. Matching artist with track, each beat fits perfectly under whoever is rhyming on it. "My Life*", which features Fat Lip, would sound right at home on a Pharcyde album.

It's nice to get an album these days that doesn't talk about money in the usual "bling bling" sense. Politics of the Business is sure to please those looking for a bit of fresh air from 50 Cent and the like...for those looking for a lot more fulfillment out of their hip-hop, Prince Paul has provided 100% of your recommended daily amount.

The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Blaaaah. Grrragr. This album is rediculous. ?uestlove. ?uestlove. ?uestlove. and oh yeah ?estlove. He is the shit. I can't say that this is my favorite Roots album, but I can say that it is a Roots album. And saying that means that it is better than 95% of all other albums out there. They also put on an amazing live concert. I think this won a Grammy or something like that for the "You Got Me" with Erykah and Eve. This is a must have for anyones collection. This is worth getting just to hear "Dynamite", "Double Toruble", and the drums at the end of "You Got Me". I read somewhere once that ?uesto likes to make people think that they are listerning to a drum machine. Until the end of that jawn, it does sound like a drum machine, then that fool goes OFF!!! Come on people it's the Roots.....

5 out of 5 tacos.

And lastly, a special treat from me. Or not so special. Depends on how you look at it. I am going to put up the songs I have listened to today. This is just a mix of what happened to come on today. I excluded some stuff, and put in a couple that I didn't really hear today. I will do more mixes as time goes on. They will probably be better than this, because I just decided to do this last minute. Here are the tracks....

Wednesday Afternoon in Nowhere

So here is the most materfull amazing piece of acoustic music ever put to recording. I challenge anyone to show me something better.

Friday Night in San Francisco - Al DeMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia

These three guitarist are phenominal on thier own. Then they team up for this magical live recording, and something really special happens. Some of the transactions back and forth between the three are amazing. It's like they are talking to each other with thier guitars, but all talking at the same time, but it works, it works perfectly. DeMeola and DeLucia are both respected and admirable flamenco guitarist. John McLaughlin is a famous jazz guitarist. He played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew, which is what many consider the seed of fusion. He also started the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which is another amazing fusion band. I really like the live album he did with Carlos Santana called "Love, Devotion, Surrender." They do some Coltrane on there that is suprisingly great. Another favorite McLaughlin project is Shakti. An indian experimental group. His interaction with the tabla player is worth the buy right there. I saw a reunion tour of these guys, and was happy for a week. Each musician was phenominal.

FNSS is an album that can be played as backround music, or cranked at full volume. That can not be said for many acoustic albums. They cover a lot of ground. It is amazing to hear the different styles of music that can come out of three acoustic guitars alone. Enjoy this one, and go get more from these artist.

Oh Stevie.

Stevie Wonder is the best. He is my favorite musician of all time. Here is an interesting tribute to Stevie. They are a bunch of jazz and funk(y) covers of Stevie Songs, mixed by DJ Spinna and Bobbito. It is called
The Wonder of Stevie
I think that anything to do with Mr. Wonder is Wonderful, so of course I think this is nice. This is actually one CD of the 2 CD set. This is the one that has the mix done by DJ Spinna and Bobbito. The other CD just has the songs on them, not mixed. Overall I was very happy with it. I initially wasn't that excited about the song selection. I would have liked to see some more funky Stevie tunes, but what can you do? It feels a bit slow at parts, but you have to give this CD a couple listens. I was expecting something different from Spinna and Bobbito. They are typically into the hip-hop thing, so I was expecting a hip-hop feel. I guess the mix has a somewhat hip-hop feel, but I don't know. I do really like this CD now. The latin feel to the Golden Lady (possibly my favorite Stevie somg of all time) is superb. The Superstition by Sergi Mendes and Brazil 77 is another Wonderful take on a Wonderful song. (enough of that) Again I went with a meeting of worlds thing here, and I am glad that I did. Here is the tracklist and the artists...

1 You Got It Bad Girl - Hugh Montenegro
2 Where Were You When I Needed You - Lionel Hampton
3 Golden Lady - Jose Feliciano
4 Pastime Paradise - Ray Barretto
5 Superstition - Sergio Mendes and Brazil 77
6 As - Gene Harris
7 Buttercup - Carl Anderson
8 Too High - Norman Brown
9 I Was Made To Love Her - Charles Earland
10 Bad Weather - The Supremes
11 Spring High - Ramsey Lewis
12 Love Having You Around - First Choice
13 Stick Together - Minnie Riperton
14 Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing - Main Ingredient
15 Another Star - Cedar Walton

TGIHHF

Thank Grandma It's Hip-Hop Friday. The second official HHF brings us some tasty treats. First is the Mr. Lif EP - Emergency Rations. This is only about 30 mins long, but it is great. The album had a sticker on it that had a quote from GW Bush that said something like, "I know two things, and I know I don't like this record." He has some pretty political messages on this one, on "Home of the Brave" in particular. He is one of those intelectuals, as the folks like to call them. The beats and samples are real nice as well. "Pull Out the Cut" has one of my favorite beats on it. It is not a tyical hip-hop joint, but then again, most of these Def Jux guys pride themselves on being different. If you like this one you may also like his album Enters the Colossus, which I found on another site. The link is here. The second album for HHF is J-Live Always will be. This also has a nice old school feel to it, with a fresh twist of (insert adj.). I didn't take this one out of my CD player for a while after I got it. He is great. If you like the Lif and Def Jux stuff, you will live J-Live. As Charels Dumar once said, "That is all."

The Mr. Lif is here
and the J Live is here

DJ Shadow has great taste in music.

Mickey and the Soul Generation
This is a band that DJ Shadow discovered. They are staight funky. Like the Meters and such. The recording on this is a bit fuzzy, but I kinda think that it adds to it. It gives it an old and undiscovered feel. When I first heard about this, maybe through the Shadow website or something, I assumed that it was a fake me out. I thought it was going to be a sideproject type deal, put togethre by Shadow. I'm still waiting for him to either spill the cheeze, and tell everyone that it is really him and his buds playing, or that it is all produced, and it is all samples that he worked over so well, that it sounds like a live band. That or maybe he will invite the surviving members on stage with him one night.
This is only the first CD of the 2 CD's. This is the Studio Sessions. The other CD is a Live CD. If you really like this, let me know. (I like comments) I will put up the live CD. This CD is funk for the sake of funk. Each musician knows thier role; A crucial element in a funk band. The drummer doesn't try to do too much. The guitarist lays it down, and the bass holds it steady. i really like the horns on this one.

A Sucker For Album Art Work

I always loved Herbie, but pretty much bought this album because I really like the album cover. That, and I knew it was released in 1975, which is only two years after the infamous Headhunters album. If you haven't heard Headhunters, stop reading right now. Go to the local record store, and buy the shit out of that album. It is amazing on many levels. And to think it was made in '73. I got a chance to see the original lineup that recorded that album play at the 9:30 club in DC. It was a reunion tour. It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I also had the amazing experience of meeting all of the guys afterwards. Yeah, thats right I met Herbie. These albums are where the roots of funk fusion are. They are short and sweet instrumentals. I think this album gets better every time I listen to it. This is another one that is good mood music. Silky to smooth to slappy to spreadable to sly to sweet to spackadow. The highlight of this album for me is Stevie Wonders apperance on "Steppin' In It". Stevie is my favorite of all time, so I am a little biased, but I still think that this is wonderfull. If you like funky stuff get this. If you like the more mellow stuff on this album, move onto "Secrets", which was released a year later. If you like the jazz feel take a step back one year to 1974 and check out Thrust. You really can't go wrong with any of these albums.

A Change A Gonna Come

Wasn't quite sure about putting a greatest hits up, but this one is so great.

I think that just about all of the music that I really like and appreciate was directly influenced by this music. The amount of soul in these 31 tracks is outrageous. If you aren't up to date with your Sam Cooke, here ya go. This is one of those ones that you put on, and find yourself singing along to every other song, and saying, "Oh, I forgot about this one" or "I didn't know this was Sam Cooke." Everyone should listen to Sam. Get this one, and play it real loud, so everyone in the neigborhood can hear. If you are a fan of the man, then this is a great one to get.It has everything on it. Here is the track list.

It's Hip-Hop Friday

I got on the Nu-Mark thang today, and saw the Okayplayer: True Notes Vol. 1, sitting in a pile of CD's next to me, so I decided it would complete the hip-hop Friday theme. I don't know if every friday will be hip-hop Friday, but we shall see.

This little fuckin CD of a CD was put together by ?uestlove, who is a complete badass. If you don't believe me check out the live BBC studio recordings from RootsLive.com. You can hear a mix of his, Babies Making Babies here. Or if you want to be a naughty boy or girl, you can get his new mix that hasn't been released yet, Babies Making Babies 2: Misery Strikes Back, you can get that here. But be warned. That BMB2 is not a mastered version. Might want to wait, or just sample, and then get the real deal when it comes out.
This Okayplayer jawn is solid. The reviews I have read said that it wasn't as great as people expected. I disagree. I like all of it. Except maybe the Pastor Skillz track. It is alright, but gets annoying. I think that anything ?uesto turns to gold, and this is no acception. With the list of artists on this thing, you can't go wrong. Tell me what you think.

DJ Nu-Mark - Hands On

Big brother, big brother, I want a chance!!! I feel like DJ Nu-Mark has played the little brother role to Cut Chemist in the J5 family. This was his first solo album. After the masive amount of hype surrounding Brainfreeze (see below), and Product Placement, along with all of the other Cut Chemist releases, I was anxious to hear some stuff from Nu-Mark. I knew it would be great, and it is. It has the mixtape format, and he doesn't really scratch all that much, which I kinda like. I like scratching and all, but keep it to a minimum. It's like a wailing guitar solo. They are impressive, but don't always fit into the song. Sometimes it's best to just sit back, and let the music be music. This CD has lots of great samples on it. There is one section that is like a hip-hop around the world. He goes from Ausie, to British, to French, to German, to Japanese, and it all sounds pretty good. It is iteresting to see how people rap that are from different parts of the world. He also uses some of his own stuff on there, which is nice. I think Melody may be my favorite track. Nu-Mark does not dissapoint, and may even take over the role as the big brother in the fam. I think this may be better than anything Cut Chemist has done solo. (That doesn't include BF or PP...those are with DJ Shadow.) This was put out in 2004. I listen to it now in 2006. Oh yeah. One last thing...

I didn't number these tracks in the zip file, so they may be in alhpabetical order. In which case, you would have to put them in order to listen to the album, because it is in mixtape fasion, and is seamless. So....here is the tracklist.

1. Intro - DJ Nu-Mark
2. Down Home - Eddy Senay
3. Rubber Bumpers - Tony Luisi
4. Laying Eggs - Paz
5. Hot Track - Rex Company Brown
6. Fudge Funk - Organized Konfusion
7. Intro "Life" - Jeru the Damaja
8. Perverted Monks in the House (Skit) - Jeru the Damaja
9. Intro - Group Home
10. Skit - The Beatnuts
11. Melody - Blendcrafters
12. Chali 2na Comin' Thru - DJ Nu-Mark, Chali 2na

Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By

, , , ...

No this is not Dan the Automator, but it is...
Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ
Peter Gabriel

What?!?, You say that Peter Gabriel is ghey. Alright then. No high fives for you (Today is National High Five Day. Visit www.nh5d.com) This sountrack lives up to its' name. PASSION is right. The beats are all intense and deep. It has a very world feel. Apparently he got a bunch of the best musicians from Africa and Asia on this. He and Martin Scorsesse worked closely together on this one. Here is what some dumbhead had to say about it. (High 5 for fake insult)...

Gabriel's approach was to use an entire panoply of North African and Asian rhythms and sounds. The countries represented are Turkey, Pakistan, India, Ivory Coast, Bahrain, Egypt, New Guinea, Morocco, Senegal and Ghana. Nor did Gabriel settle for second best. Prominent vocalists like Youssou N'Dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Baaba Maal combine with the likes of Hossam Ramzy and David Rhodes to produce effects ranging from toe-tapping to incredibly eerie.

When I say that this is good music to make love to the old lady by, I mean it. It is great "mood music". WARNING: Do not put on this CD unless you are ready to become engulfed with intense passion and commence the necking. Ladies will become weak at the knees, and the hips and all other joints and crevaces for that matter.

This is another sountrack like Royal Tenenbaums, in that it stands on its' own as a piece of music, but also cotributes a large amount to the film. There is a lot of contoversy over The Last Temptation of Christ, but there should be none over how great this sountrack is.

Just put on the three CD's and let em roll. I put them in this order, Wis, Apple, Skelly. Don't really know why. I guess I like the Skelly stuff the best, so I saved it for last. But, you really can't miss with these guys. The Power of the Trinity has it all. There are interviews between each song, which explain what the song is about, and some longer interviews at the end of each CD. I took out a couple of these on the Apple and Wiss CD's so that they fit onto CD-R's. If you like reggae at all, you will absolutely like this. Enough said. Here are the track listings...

Another "best of both worlds type thing going on here. Soulive holds it down. I saw them on New Years with Robert Randolph at Irving Plaza a few years ago. They are all amazing musicians. Neal Evans is fun to watch because he has that Doors thing going, where he plays the bass lines on the organ with one hand, while ripping it up on some keyboards with the other. As a drummer, I can say that Alan Evans is one of my favorites. He keeps it so tight. It makes perfect sense to use Soulive songs for a hip-hop remix album because his beats are so tight. They are perfect for sampling. Remind me of some J Dilla shit. That is not to say that he doesn't go off, when necessary, but you won't see that much of that here. This album has lots of great people on it. J-Live, Beatnuts, Blahblah, you can fuckin read. Some of the songs have a more hip-hop feel, and others have the jazz feel. That is what makes it work. Enjoy this one.

This will never get old to me.

BRAINFREEZE
I guess this is an infamous album at this point. Any way you slice it, it's great. This is another meeting of hip-hop and soul. DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist go back and forth with old soul 45's. There is a sequel called Product Placement, but I don't think it is as good. This cd is only two tracks, each about 25 minutes, and the second just as good as the first. I think it is a good cd to put on at almost any time with almost any crowd. Shadow and Chemist keep the scratching to a minimum and focus on the mix. Some of the interludes are a bit much, but it is overall lots of fun. I could see it playing at my next party, that is if I can get the new K-Fed album out of the CD player. (Damn yo.!! My peeps be all up on that jint. Hells son, I ain't frontin'. Wooode got it poppin.) On that note, I will leave you with the amazing track listing for Brainfreeze, but first, here is a picture of Sadam after hearing this album.

Funk meets Fukt

Praxis - Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis)

Lets see we got Bootsy Collins. The man is just as insane on the bass as he is in the head. He is the bassist from Parlaiment. He shreds. So does Buckethead. You can hear the dead chickens coming through his guitar. I honeslty thought before I heard this that the two would clash. I mean such overwhelming insanity and shredding on thier respective instuments. But it works quite well. It is like a precursor to Bucket of Bernies Brains. From what I have heard I like Praxis more. I think that Brain is great on the drums. He has an amazing touch and sense of movement. He knows when to hit it and when to quit it. Bernie is another member of Parlaiment. I think he adds a lot, and kinda pulls it together/holds it down. I guess that comes from his years of playing in a funk band. Alright, here are some Praxis videos.

If 6 was 9
and
Animal Behavior

here is a Buckethead interview with Kurt Loder. It is pretty entertaining because Buckethead only speaks with a mask that he has on his hand. (and talks about the dead chickens coming through his guitar.---Chicken. Arise. A-chicken. Rise. ATHF anyone??)The man is quite odd. I can only imagine what it would be like to hang out in the same room as him, let alone him and Bootsy. How about taking some guitar lessons from Buckethead. That video is quite impressive, even if you don't like the music, you have to be impresssed by the mans skills.

The DL is back up

^^Became inactive/No DL for 30 days.

Wu-Tang Soul Ain't Nuthin' To Fux Wit???

AWWWW DARN. The DL is down. I just realized it. I'll get it back up soon. And this was one of the most downloaded ones on the site. (But I kinda think that it was hotlinked???, and that may have something to do with it being down. Let me know if you are gonna hotlink)

Shaolin Soul - Classic Soul Music That Inspired The Wu-Tang Clan

This was a great find for me. It mixes two worlds that I dig HARD. The soul and the Wu-Tang world worlds don't exactly colide, but more kiss each other, maybe on the nose. This is some of the soul songs that Wu-Tang took samples from. It is compiled by RZA. It is a great listen. All of the songs are great, and it is fun to pick out the samples used. You may also recognize samples used by other artist. The liner notes has the Wu songs that each was used in, but that wouldn't be any fun if I posted that. Right?? So download it and see what you can hear. Wu, Tang, Wu, Tang, Wu, .... I would like to hear the Kings of Funk compilation that RZA did. If anyone knows where I can sample it, leave me a comment.

1. I Like It - The Emotions
2. Troubles, Heartaches & Sadness - Ann Peebles
3. Little Ghetto Boy - Donny Hathaway (live)
4. Way We Were, The - Gladys Knight & The Pips
5. Aretha, Sing One For Me - George Jackson
6. Let's Straighten It Out - O.V. Wright
7. Groovin' - Willie Mitchell
8. If You Think It (You Might As Well Do It) - The Emotions
9. I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over - David Porter
10. Honybee - New Birth
11. Could I Be Falling In Love - Syl Johnson
12. Why Marry - The Sweet Inspirations
13. Something - Al Green
14. Motherless Child - O.V. Wright

I also threw a Soldiers of Jah Army (SOJA) single on there. It has four tracks. I guess this is a little shiesty, but I want people to hear this. It is great music. This single doesn't have thier best stuff on it, but it is still good. The tracks here aren't the same as the ones released on the album Get Wiser. They don't have the horns on them, but they are still great. The dubs are awesome. They are done by the masterful Jim Fox of Lion Fox Studios. That link is to the people he has recorded and dubbed...impressive. If you like what you hear go to thier site here The track listing for that one is...

1. You Don't Know Me
2. 911
3. 911 Dub
4. You Don't Know Dub

This is the album that those tunes come off of...

Both the SOJA single and the Shaolin Soul are in one zip. file. You can download all of this goodness LATER.

David Byrne- Rei Momo
This is David Byrnes' first solo album after departing with the Talking Heads. My brother Vince turned me onto this album (along with a lot of the other music I listen to), and I am very glad that he did. Rei Momo translates into "king of the carnival".

Here are some David Byrne qoutes I found when looking for the picture of the album cover. i like these..

'music, lyrics and images are most exciting when you can't quite get a handle on them'

'I'm not going to restrict myself musically because I'm only supposed to listen to whatever they think I'm supposed to listen to', Byrne said. 'You can't control musicians that way. I don't think you need to have grown up with some music to be touched by it'.

This album has a difinitive latin feel to it. The precusion on it is all wonderfull. I really like the backing vocals. And David Byrne does not upset. He seems to slip into the latin style of music like a frog into a monkey suit. You don't really expect to see that all the time, but when you do, you get happy. I wish I owned a frog or a monkey.

The Brown is Comming To Town

On The 12th of April I will be going to see an amazing spectacte of musical tastiness. This said tastiness is that which is Ween. I am very amped to see Mr. Dean and Gene Ween take the stage at the Disco Rodeo in Raleigh. The last time I saw them was in Las Vegas on Haloween, which was eeenyce. I can only hope that this concert is as entertaining as the last. These guys run through such a large amount of great music in a single night, and yet you will leave wanting more. You will leave involunarily hailing the Boognish.

If you don't really know much about Ween besides Push Th' Little Daisies or Roses Are Free, this may be a great place to start. What we have here is a recording of the WEEN J-files as aired in June 2000 on triple J radio in Australia. It is about three hours long, and includes album tracks, rare recordings, and interviews. Iwanted to cut it up into CD sized pieces, but the trim program I have wouldn't support such a large file, or maybe the file just contained too much rocking and stunning music. This radio host is a freeegin Ausie mate, so depending on how you look at it, that is either awful or shitty. No, really though, the guy does a great job. He seems to be genuinely pumped up about doing a three hour radio show on the Ween. Hell, I would be too. Even three hours though isn't truly enough to cover all of what Ween has to offer. They do such a wide variety of music, and never seem to suprise when you hear a new sound from them. The thing is though, they put a definite stamp on all of the stuff they play. Even if it is a spanish mariachi type song like "Buenos Tardes" or an Irish drinking song like the "Blarney Stone". That stamp looks like this....

Royal Tenebaums Soundtrack

Eli: Why would a reviewer make the point of saying someone's *not* a genius? Do you especially think I'm *not* a genius? You didn't even have to think about it, did you?

This is a great soundtrack to an even better movie. Wes Anderson is one of if not the best film maker of this current period in film. He can really create an alternate reality that has flaws and exaggerations, but as a viewer you accept them. They become part of this world that you really relate to in an odd way. You forget that some of the surrounding plot is obscure, and you find yourself understanding the characters emotion or thought that they are having at any given moment. All of his films, and Royal Tenenbaums have a extreeme attention to detail. Every color you see, every item in the background and foreround, every camera angle, every line you hear, the intonation on that line, and every other little detail, is thought out by Anderson. Just buy the Criterion Collection DVD for this movie, and you will see it comes with a book of cartoon sketches (done by Wes's brother) depicting what each room of the Tenenbaum house will look like. Here is a link to a page with some pictures of one of those illustrations. This attention to detail is also applied to the soundtracks of W. Andersons movies. Anderson has employed the talents of Mark Mothersbaugh for the sountrack of Royal Tenenbaums. Mothersbough was the lead singer of the band Devo (Whip it!!!Whip it good!!) MM has done the soundtrack for Andersons previous movies as well (Rushmore and Bottlerocket). here is a link to his imdb page. This soundtrack is possibly his best work of what I have heard. (as a composer) Each song is picked for a certain scene in the movie, and are used to create a specific mood for that scene. This creates a flow to the soundtrack that has real canter and reason. The songs composed by Mothersbaugh contribute a lot to this flow. It has depth as well. It ranges from Paul Simon, to The Ramones, to Vince Guaraldi. I guess the CD was reissued a second time without some of the tracks on this one here. It does not have the orchestral "Hey Jude", which is great. It also did not have "Me an Julio" by P. Simon, "Look at Me" by J. Lennon, or "Fairest of the Seasons" by Nico. I'm not sure if there were others that were left off. Here is the track listing

Mark Mothersbaugh - 111 Archer Avenue
Nico - These Days
Ysaye Quartet - String Quartet In F Major
Paul Simon - Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
The Mutato Muzika Orchestra - Sonata For Cello And Piano In F Minor
Bob Dylan - Wigwam (Instrumental)
Mark Mothersbaugh - Look At That Old Grizzly Bear
John Lennon - Look At Me
Emitt Rhodes - Lullaby
Mark Mothersbaugh - Mothersbaugh Canon
The Clash - Police & Thieves
Mark Mothersbaugh - Scrapping And Yelling
Ramones Lyrics - Is A Punk
Mark Mothersbaugh - Pagoda's Theme
Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay
Nick Drake - Fly
Mark Mothersbaugh - I Always Wanted To Be A Tenenbaum
Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Time Is Here
The Velvet Underground - Stephanie Says
Mark Mothersbaugh - Rachel Evans Tenenbaum (1965-2000)
Mark Mothersbaugh - Sparkplug Minuet
Nico - The Fairest Of The Seasons
The Mutato Muzika Orchestra - Hey Jude

As a reviewer: I am saying that Wes Anderson, this movie, and this soundrack *are* genius. I especially think he *is* a genius. I didn't even have to think about it.

Jacky Jasper - Keep My Shit Clean

So I just did a whole review of this. Probably the best review of all of the ones I've written, and I don't know where it went. I thought I posted it. Guess not. I'm not gonna do it again right now. (maybe later) But I will say that this shit is rediculous. okay - nutshel - artwork on the album = outrageous. has Ice T, Kool Kieth, Esham, Chino XL, and Roger Troutman. The music = not my favorite, but has is just as outrageous as the artwork. and I am not the biggest fan, but I post it because it is out of print, it has kool kieth, and because I told one of the only people I have told about this page that I would post this today.

Rum & Cokes and Dominoes

SUMO - After Chabon

The idea here is to get music out there that you may not normaly hear. I searched for this album at every record store I went to for years. Then Gravity said they would order it for me. I guess I could have just ordered it off the internet, but eh..

This album will always remind me of Alfredo. The first time I ever heard it was at his house. Since then, there have been many many more nights of drinking rumandcokes and playing dominoes with Tio, Flip, and Chica; tons of ceviche, firing up the grill at about 8 and then again around 2. Those people have always made me feel welcome, and I have always felt at home with them.

I read a review of the album somewhere that said it sounded like a combo of Lou Reed, Bob Marley, The Clash, Joy Division, and Luca Prodan himself. I would have to agree. They have a bit of a Sublime feel sometimes. Some of the songs are sung in Spanish, and some are sung in English. There is a nice Silent Night (Noche de Paz), which is done in a Ska type way. The album has a "world" feel, kinda like a U2 thing going on, but not really. I guess I say that because when I listen to some of the tracks I imagine huge crowds of people at some festival or benefit, singing along. I also have the memories of singing along at the top of our lungs in Alfredos yard until the early morn. I guess L. Prodan was from London. He became a heroine adict, and moved to Argentina, where he formed this band. He is now dead. From an OD I think. Apparently you can still find grafiti across South America that says "Luca Lives" or something like that. I guess they were pretty big across South America in the 80's. To me this doesn't sound like 80's music at all.

I highly suggest you listen to this. The link for the download is here

You try to get over your gonna go under!!!

Deltron 3030
So I guess I got this figured out somewhat. I don't really understand the Days...Day 1 now, but do the days change automatically, just like in real life. This e-world time may be different. Maybe the year is really 3030 on the internet....okay that was fucking stupid. But I was attempting an interlude to this

It's Deltron 3030. A great hip-hop album. 1 part Del the Funky Homosapien, 1 part Dan The Automator, 1 part Kid Koala, all parts glorious. I like to listen to this album. So will you, even if you don't like hip-hop, or even if you don't like me. I gotts the origional version which is out of print. The one with the cardboard type cover. I got it used for $5, and it was in nearly perfect condition.

A Review-
It's the year 3030 and Del is still smooth. Del is funny, kina...no he is funny. Some of the interludes are great. His flow...whenever I say or write the word flow I think feel silly, and a bit out of my element...Like in Adaptation.

Donald Kaufman: I'm pitching my script today.
Charlie Kaufman: Please don't say pitch.

Anyhow, the flow is great, and Dan the Automator makes me want to buy tons of monkies.

It is nifty. I will stop this review here. Listen to the sheeite, and tell me what you think.

First Try

Someone PLEASE download this. Trust me you will not be upset.

The idea here is to have music reviews, and other stuff I like on this page. I am trying to put the Avett Brothers CD- Mignonette up, because it is the only CD that I have on me at the moment, and It is great.

The Avetts are from NC. They have a ROUGH bluegrass sound. They used to be a rock/punk type band, but now play this amazing acoustic music. The songwriting is some of the best I have heard in a long time. They create a mood very well. If you ever get a chance to see them live you should take that chance, and double it. The high energy feel of the album comes through in the live performance. Thier songs have a quality about them that makes you feel as if you have already heard them about 100 times, and you can just sing along, but not in a bad way. The type of songs that you have memories attached to. I truly like all of the songs on this album, and think it plays through very well, but highlights include. Nothing Short of Thankful, At The Beach, Pretty Girl From Cedar Lane, and One Line Wonder.

If you like bluegrass/newgrass, you will like this CD.

you can download the CD here

If you download this. Listen to the music, and if you like it, go out and buy the CD, along with other Avett brothers.
You can buy the CD here
