Kumbham has hosted a 2 day gathering of art and handicraft enthusiasts from all over the country in Aruvacode in Nilambur. The meeting was basically to address the various issues faces by the craftspeople in the country who are struggling for not only their sustainability and existence but also to retain the tradition they have been blessed with from generations.
People from various work areas have participated in the gathering. Activists, teachers, students, natural scientists, architects designers, engineers from many corners of the country have participated with a common stand and passion for the traditional crafts.
The event began with 3 exhibitions held displaying the works done by children of various age groups during their summer vacation in the “Sensing nature and Knowing Nature “workshop, Works of the children done in their free time, and various clay products made at Kumbham were also displayed. The Objectives and Goals of Enable Artisan Project has also been displayed which formed a different exhibition altogether.
Amidst the friendly talks and traditional Kerala cuisine Mr. Jinan, has put forth his ideas about the Enable Artisan Project. He has envisaged it in such a way that not only the young potters would get benefited by it but all the collaborators who would join this project will be able to get the joy of preserving the tradition of the country. It would be a community act rather than an individual contribution.
This project aims at giving the traditional potters a platform to take forward their skills with sheer dignity and as a meaningful means of livelihood. The potters will have an exposure to the urban population to understand the modern ways of marketing, development of new designs, and understand various types of customer needs. They would also learn modern ways of communication and marketing through internet. They would also be exposed to skills such as accounting and functional usage of computer. This will be an easy way to communicate and develop their potential clients.
At the end of two years as the last stage of the project, we would help the artisans to set up their own production centers at their respective villages. They would become an example for the entire village.
This project would need 29lakhs for its working, Mr. Jinan has predicted it in such a way that it will be a mass effort hence, he said that the best way of funding is to get money from 3000 people rather than one person or organization contributing the whole amount. This is a unique experiment which will form a blueprint for various other crafts.
This session was concluded with many suggestions and ideas from experienced brains and young minds with equal enthusiasm.
