Many people feel that they are suited to serving their country is a way which will help the population and advance the prospects of all those who live there. They feel honored to be able to join in running their country and in the decision making processes. The Rio Branco Institute, also known as the IrBr, trains diplomatic candidates in the ways of the diplomatic corps.
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeks to promote the interests of Brazil and its people abroad. It does this in many ways. It tries to attract the best and most suited men and women to come and work for the Diplomatic Service. It wants people who will help to defend and promote Brazil in other countries and at home.
Anyone who wishes to work as a diplomat must first pass the entrance examination. Registration for this can be done on-line during the first few months of the year. If the examination is passed, then it will be possible to enter the Training Course in Diplomacy at the IrBr. All those who enter the training course do so as Third Secretaries. So they are already trainee diplomats from the moment they join.
They are then entitled to receive a very good salary with many additional benefits, including medical insurance. Third Secretaries usually need to pass more examinations in order to become Second, and then First Secretaries. After becoming a First Secretary, the next step up the career ladder is to Councilor. From there it is possible to become a Second Class Minister, and at last, a First Class Minister. The First Class Minister is also known as an Ambassador.
As a Diplomat, the main functions are to represent Brazil in international meetings and negotiate in those meetings. This is a vital role for the promotion of Brazilian foreign policy and culture abroad. The diplomat also passes any information along to the Foreign Office which would help them to formulate their foreign policy.
People in the diplomatic corps have to deal with a wide variety of subjects. They can be involved with making decisions about homeland security and peaceful negotiations with other countries. They can deal with what to do with criminals or drug traffickers. They can even be in committees about global warming and climate change. There are hundreds of different topics which may arise and must be dealt with. Human affairs, economic and trade matters, or even promoting culture through attending balls and parties hosted by foreign dignitaries, anything could arise.
For these things to happen, he must be fully informed about world affairs. With the speed of change increasing these days, all diplomatic communications are super fast He can use this knowledge wisely and with a sure judgement learned from his days training at IrBr.
Diplomats can come from scientific, social economics, journalistic, or academic backgrounds. They can be former administrators, or doctors, or lawyers. The IrBr provides training to people from all walks of life and helps them to fulfill their potential to become diplomats.
