There has been a recent spate of con artists attempting to cash in on the ability to make a No Win No Fee Injury, by setting up car crashes and then making fraudulent personal injury claims.

Those involved in such scams created the accidents either by driving their car into the car of a friend and then splitting the claim, or by targeting roundabouts and junctions in their own car and hoping another motorist will go into the back of them. It is estimated that there were X amount of such scams last year, and it seems the likelihood of getting caught is now on the increase, if this tale is anything to go by.

The first instance was in West London, where a gang attempted to defraud insurers of thousands of pounds in compensation by creating a crash involving a double decker bus. One member of the gang drove the bus into the car of a friend whilst carrying six more friends as passengers.

The bus followed it's usually route, but failed to pick up any waiting passengers, limiting both the chance of being reported and also the chance of innocent bystanders being hurt, although there was still a huge risk of pedestrians or motorists being involved in the crash as it was on a busy road.

After the crash had taken place, those involved then began proceedings for compensation claims for head and neck injuries- further benefiting from refer-a-friend bonuses from the solicitors. Their ruse was up however, when the officers on the case were tipped off that the men had past history, and by obtaining the phone records of the men were able to unravel their web of lies.

The bus driver plus the six that were passengers, the driver of the car and his passenger were all found guilty of fraud, with a 6 month suspended prison sentence handed to three of them.
