The European Commission Thursday announced it will claim back €115.2 million of EU farm subsidies unduly spent by member states. Italy is being asked to refund €57.2 million and the UK must return €31.6 million for the financial years 2007 to 2010. Some of the subsidies have already been returned.
France and the UK are to sign a deal to strengthen co-operation in the development of civil nuclear energy at a summit in Paris on Friday. An announcement on joint development of a future unmanned aircraft is also expected.
The Italian technocrat government of Mario Monti has announced plans forcing the church to pay property tax on buildings used for commercial purposes. The tax is estimated to raise revenues of minimum €500 million, with the Catholic Church being one of Italy's largest private real estate holders.
The European Parliament has signed off a trade deal with Morocco which poses questions about the status of Western Sahara.
