contest, dating, new york, new years
It struck me this morning that Opera is now in the dating service business. Dan won our
NYC Times Square competition because of his cute story about having met this girl through Opera IRC. Sparks flew across cyberspace, and he wanted to win our competition so that he could meet the girl in NYC.
Not only did Opera provide the channel through which they met. We also provided the topics for their conversation (Opera). And now we are flying them to a foreign country on a holiday so they can meet. And we pay for their hotel. That's where they are now. Let's hope they're not talking about Opera anymore... And some time from now, who knows? Too bad the name Opera Mini is already taken

!
You can follow the developments as they unfold in

In the first place, I do not know if they would be interested, and furthermore every government in the world would have reacted strongly if we did it," Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, Aftenposten reported on Friday.

So it is already 2006. I know it will take me two months before I manage to adjust to writing
2005 2006 on letters and forms. Ah well, I had a nice and relaxing time over the holidays, only interrupted by phone calls from journalists around the world curious to hear about Google acquiring Opera. Or was it Microsoft?
Our
Times Square competition was received very well by everyone, and I am glad we finally got the two love birds
on a plane today. You can follow the development in
Dan's blog.
Lots of exciting stuff happening in 2006, folks! We have the worldwide launch of
Opera Mini coming up really soon, and I am busy preparing for it. I am very excited about this as Mini has such a great potential. Really, think about it. We're bringing the full Web to some 700 million phones around the world! Almost everybody can start surfing on the phone they have today! Isn't that a mobile Web revolution?
Then there's the much awaited release of
Opera for Pocket PC, which is so close now that I can smell it in the hallways here at the Opera HQs. That is a smooth-running, sexy piece of software if I ever saw one.
I would love to say more, but need to keep some secrets, too
We've really turned it up quite a few notches in home media, or what is now officially our
Opera for Devices business unit. The consumer electronics market will be of increased importance to Opera in 2006, and we have already made a few
announcements.
Let's make 2006 as good for each other as I think it will be for Opera!

opera, Fun, Firefox, browsers
...
Here's my Christmas speech to the ladies from last year's Opera Christmas Party. It was given to an audience of (drunk) Opera people, so it may at times be, as they say, "politically incorrect". Anyhoo, this is my (dysfunctional) way to say thanks for a great year, take care of each other, enjoy the holidays, and let's make 2006 a fantastic year for all!
Warm regards,
Eskil
Some women are like Internet Explorer
Some women are like Internet Explorer: bloated, unstable, and open to exploitation by anyone who wants to have a go. Those of us who don’t know better stick with our IE woman through thick and thin. We may do this because of several reasons:
1.We like’em big, slow and moody
2.She has sucked us in and made us dependent on her friends and family
3.We are naïve and unaware of everything she is doing behind our backs
4.We just don’t care
But most of us do. That’s why Firefox is gaining popularity. Now, let me say a few words about the women who are like Firefox: They’re slim, good looking, quite stable, and have smaller security erm.. gaps. But most of all they’re simple. Firefox women are the kind you can show to your friends and take out to a bar, but never ask to mow the lawn. That is, unless she has a (hair) extension for it. It is easy to mistake beauty for quality. Beauty, as they say, is often only skin deep.
There are several benefits to dating these women, but the biggest is perhaps that we don’t have to go through the pain of getting to know her intimately. What you see is what you get. These are WYSIWYG women.
It’s easy to fall in love with Firefox women because of their relative beauty and simplicity. Because, stereotypically, men are supposed to be simple. We want a browser/woman that looks good and doesn’t demand much attention or maintenance. Although nobody can deny that the world is full of such men, I think it is fair to say that most of us are more complex and want to have meaningful relationships.
We are either gay, or we chose Opera women.
Not because Opera women promise (and indeed give) you the best experience on any platform, but because they complete us. Opera women reshape the way we see and move about in the world. They let us discover new sides every day, and make our lives more joyful.
But of course, in all their greatness, Opera women are indeed women, and as such their Opera features can be, but are not always, beneficial to us men:
Take sessions. If you have a fight and you disagree so much that she simply shuts down, you have the option of picking up where you left off (bad) – OR you can start with a blank page (very good!). Imagine the luxury! But be careful, you can be sure that she has saved that session, and make one wrong step and she’ll bring it right back and smack you in the face with it. And there is nothing you can do to cover up. Because she remembers…
Of course, any comparison between the Opera browser and women would not be complete without mentioning the sophisticated chat feature. The chat feature is closely linked to the newsfeeds function which enables them to instantly receive the latest rumors and spread them with the most powerful communications tool available.
Then there’s Mouse Gestures… I wanted to make jokes about the incredible things they can do with their mouse, but they only make sense in Norwegian… and Portuguese, I was told.
It is perhaps a stretch to say that you Opera women, who we hold so dearly, share all the qualities of the Opera browser. There is particularly one feature I think most lack – namely what we on the feature list call "cookie control", and means you are able to reject all cookies if so desired. I have never heard of a woman with cookie control.
Lastly, one Opera browser feature that really struck me as universal in that I think it is highly developed in all women: If we stick with the analogy that women are like browsers, there is one trait we in Opera call Browser Spoofing. This is the cunning ability to masquerade as another browser to get what you want…
When all is said and done, millions of us have discovered how wonderful Opera women are. But our hearts and sympathy go out to our brothers who have yet to do so. I think it boils down to maturity and sophistication. Men are slow learners and some would argue that we remain simple and immature for the greater part of our lives. That's why we mess around with Firefox women. That's why divorce statistics are so high. When we find our Opera woman we stick with her through thick and thin. Beauty can be so many things, and we may all define it differently. What matters is that you trust each other fully, communicate well, and keep each other happy.
Now, if all the men here would stand up, raise your glasses, and if you are one of the 33 guys here lucky enough to be sitting next to an Opera woman, look her in the eyes and join me in the toast for the ladies.
And remember: You don't love a woman because she is beautiful, but she is beautiful because you love her.

mobile, opera, mobile browser, mobile web access
...
Ok, so the news will reach you very soon: We've silently removed the restrictions on downloading Opera Mini. The official launch with bells and whistles and fireworks will be in late January, and lifting the restrictions was done to increase the server traffic as we are scaling up for the big, global launch. We may or may not restrict access again before the official launch, but for now Opera Mini is available, free of charge, to everyone. All you have to do is direct your phone's WAP browser to
http://mini.opera.com.I feel I am balancing on the edge here, because we could use a good pre-launch buzz on Opera Mini, but at the same time it is important that we don't get too much publicity now instead of in January. Opera Mini has been
hailed by the industry and we at Opera are not the only ones who are very excited about its launch. With Opera Mini, almost everyone can get full Web access on the phone they already have, which is pretty cool, but just as important is looking at it from an industry level. With Opera Mini we are really bringing Mobile Web into the mainstream, with all the obvious implications and benefits that has for operators, content providers and end-users. January will be very exciting.
You should also check the
Opera Mini forums on my.opera.com, where users share experiences, tips and tricks.

It's been a great anniversary year for us, and we've been talking a lot internally about how to finish it off with a bang. We want to thank all our millions of users, because that's really why we are here. So, we've rented advertising space on the biggest outdoor screen in the world - the ABC SuperSign in Times Square, New York! And we're flying two lucky Opera users to NYC where they will attend ABC's New Year's Party! Read more about it

opera mini, opera mobile, mobile web access
Last week Opera Mini received the Gold Mobile award for "Best application for mobile phones" at the annual Swedish
Mobilgala event in Stockholm.
What's really nice about this award is that it is based on popular vote by the readers of Sweden's leading mobile magazine,
Mobil.se. It's when we get this kind of user feedback that we know we are doing something right.
Opera Mini is so far only available in the Nordics and in Germany and we are building up for the global launch that will happen very soon. Despite the limited availibility, Mini is building up an impressive track record. The real test of any mobile applicatition is not whether a lot of people download it, but if they actually
use it too, right? And not only do people download Opera Mini, but they do use it; On average, users surf between 10 and 30 Web pages every time they fire up the browser!
What does this mean? Well, firstly, people like it. Oh, this is important, so let me do this in bullets to make it clear. So:
1. People like it
Opera Mini is free of charge and it gives people full and fast Web access on their existing mobile phones. That's a pretty good package.
2. Content providers can suddenly reach the mass market with existing Web based services and content. And anyone who can create a Web page can now create mobile services aimed at the mobile user. With Opera Mini, the market has suddenly expanded dramatically.
3. Operators can drive data traffic across their entire customer base. According to Nokia's 2005 Smartphone360 Study, almost 60% of data traffic on mobile networks is generated by Web browsing. Yet only a tiny percentage of any operator's customers own a smartphone that is powerful enough to run a full Web browser. With Opera Mini, almost the entire customer base can surf the Web on the handsets they have today. Do the math.
And to throw in one more thing: Branding. Any operator, content provider or company can have their own branded versions of Opera Mini to offer to their customers, clients, employers, fans or interest groups. The startpage is fully customizable, can be updated over the air. If you're interested in this, please
contact us.
Here at Opera we are making the last preparations for the full global launch of Opera Mini, and we can't wait. Are you ready to drive mobile Web surfing into the mainstream this winter?

Many of us are waiting for the PPC version of Opera, including me

. I'm happy to say that we today
announced that Opera 8.5 for PPC will be included on the new

Willcom Inc.
The Sharp W-ZERO3 is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device, and the first Pocket PC device to feature the Opera browser. The device featuring the final version of Opera 8.5 for PPC will be available in Japan in mid-January. And yes, that is also when we will have the public, downloadable version available from opera.com!

We
announced the Opera Platform SDK in connection with the W3C's MWI event in London on November 15. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should!
Opera Platform SDK is free to download and enables you to quickly create AJAX type applications for mobile phones. These "widgets" are small applications that are directly accessible from your phone, and can get you info on anything from the local weather forecast to your e-bay bidding status or when the next bus leaves - with one click. Opera Platform uses open standards Web technologies to develop advanced applications for mobile phones quickly and cheaply.
Read more about it here.
We also have an
Opera Platform competition going where you can a Nokia N70.
