Mini gets Mighty: Introducing Opera Mini 2.0

, ,

It is out! As of this morning we officially (and proudly) released Opera Mini 2.0. The press release is going out as I am writing this, and the updates to opera.com are waiting to be synched - so by reading this you are one of the very first people to hear the news and get your hands on the new Opera Mini.

To download Opera Mini 2.0 to your phone, go to http://mini.opera.com with your phone's WAP browser. For other ways of getting Mini, go to the official Opera Mini site.

It has a lot of new functionality, the coolest of which I think is the ability to download files from the Web. It also has new design options and a lot of improvements under the hood.

What's new, you ask? Here's what:

  • Content download: Download images, MP3s, etc. directly to the phone.
  • New skins: Make Opera Mini your own by selecting from several new and bold skins to suit your mood.
  • Multisearch: Opera Mini offers advanced searching functionality by allowing users to select extra search engines for the home page.
  • Speed dial: Bookmarks displayed on the home page are assigned a shortcut key combination for faster access to favorite sites.
  • Visual navigation: Quick and smooth horizontal panning when browsing backwards or forwards.

Gotta go and play with my new Mini now!

This is a great day here at Opera. This morning we released Opera Mini - free of charge - to the entire world. Now most people can surf the full Web on the phone they have today. That's pretty neat, if you ask me.

Gearing up for the mobile Internet revolution - can you see Mini around the corner?

, , ,

Pssst... I am in the US this week to prepare analysts and journalists for the upcoming launch of Opera Mini. As anyone who reads my blog knows, we are very excited about this release here at Opera. The very concept of mobile Web browsing is still a novelty to most people, so we have an important job to do in terms of educating the market on the possibilities and growing importance of the mobile Web. I think Opera Mini will take us a long way in that respect. Let 2006 be the year when Opera kickstarted the mobile Internet revolution!

I love meeting press and analysts and show them Opera Mini. Especially if they have never tried the Opera browser on a mobile device. Seeing is believing.

WOW, this is AWESOME!

I'll smile, lean back and say... I know.

Our new baby, Opera Mini, was launched in Norway on August 10 to front TV2's mobile offering. It's a Java-based solution that enables full Internet access on the 700 million Java-based handsets in the world today that cannot run a full browser on the client side. With Opera Mini, you can probably surf the Internet on the phone you have today!

According to Morten Holst at TV2, it has been the most successful mobile offer ever.

Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter Research said:

The folks at Opera have delivered the latest version of their mobile browser, this one called Opera mini. The beauty of this little gem is that it's Java based so it runs on any phone with a Java client and lets you hit any HTML site. It overcomes the small screen of the cell phone using their excellent small screen rendering. I tried it on my Moto RAZR and it worked flawlessly. I was able to hit every HTML site I threw at it including heavy lifting sites like the NY Times. This is a really big breakthrough for the mobile space. If I were a handset vendor and carrier, I'd give a call to these folks ASAP and get this thing on my handsets.

After a fantastic response from content providers, operators, handset manufacturers and end-users worldwide, we are putting all efforts into launching Opera Mini globally, and hopefully before 2005 is over!

Good times to come!
