Mini gets Mighty: Introducing Opera Mini 2.0

, ,

It is out! As of this morning we officially (and proudly) released Opera Mini 2.0. The press release is going out as I am writing this, and the updates to opera.com are waiting to be synched - so by reading this you are one of the very first people to hear the news and get your hands on the new Opera Mini.

To download Opera Mini 2.0 to your phone, go to http://mini.opera.com with your phone's WAP browser. For other ways of getting Mini, go to the official Opera Mini site.

It has a lot of new functionality, the coolest of which I think is the ability to download files from the Web. It also has new design options and a lot of improvements under the hood.

What's new, you ask? Here's what:

  • Content download: Download images, MP3s, etc. directly to the phone.
  • New skins: Make Opera Mini your own by selecting from several new and bold skins to suit your mood.
  • Multisearch: Opera Mini offers advanced searching functionality by allowing users to select extra search engines for the home page.
  • Speed dial: Bookmarks displayed on the home page are assigned a shortcut key combination for faster access to favorite sites.
  • Visual navigation: Quick and smooth horizontal panning when browsing backwards or forwards.

Gotta go and play with my new Mini now!

Great news! Thanks!
There is, however, one "problem", still no RTL/BiDi support... :frown:

how is the new version on a Samsung D600?

i want to buy the phone, but i'm worried about how opera works on it

i bet the download function won't work

I'm afraid I don't know the details on Opera Mini's performance on all the various phone models. Go to the Opera Mini forums and post your question there, and I am sure someone from Opera or the Opera community will be able to answer you!

Neat, thanks

can someone put up some screenshots of the two side by side?

I've already installed it. Great so far!

Smaller size, too (the advanced, international version, at least)

By dantesoft, # 3. May 2006, 13:43:12

avatar
hmm, I thought it would be gimmicky, but I *like* the animated menus.

and the "# 1" shortcut reminders? Brilliant! Great work.

+ Downloads actually work on this one! Great! (Siemens M75)
+ More search options, though uncustomizable.
- However, the new visual sliding of pages is vain, useless, and potentially confusing.

By ersi, # 3. May 2006, 13:55:45

avatar
ersi- You can turn it off in settings

By Eddie_Lopez, # 3. May 2006, 14:04:58

Visual effects can be both pleasing to the eye and give helpful clues to the user. How is it confusing?

just one question, is the jajah version also already available/integrated? (http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/04/06/2/)

So far, it appears to be working flawlessly on my K700i. I've had a quick play around with some of the new features (downloads in particular, as its always been a tricky one to implement) and I have to say I'm most impressed. My thanks to the development team and all their hard work.

To the person who was concerned about all the features working on a the samsung d600. THEY DO!!!!!, i've just downloaded it and tested the features. Overall its fantastic , i love all the new features, the shortcuts and especially the downloads which worked flawlessly. Im so chuffed that they got it to work as other apps i have tried have had probs as the java system in the d600 is prone to crashin. Well done opera , good work !!!, also love the shortcuts for the bookmarks !! a big improvement to last edition.

Downloads work as well as Opera can get them...

Unfortunately, with CERTAIN PROVIDERS, they lock their phones down so that you can't save things off the web, they instead want you to pay $3 for an animated GIF or a short MP3... :irked:

I know of sites to get around that, though. :D

Anyway...

In-page links work now. w00t!

I've already upgraded to OM-2 & believe me it is FANTASTIC !
Inclusive of all the basic features of a browser it has now become a real MIGHTY model maintaining its high-speed functionality all along !
I'm using it on my Nokia-3230 very smoothly using all the new features & have downloaded a lot of content so far without any any problems. I did not find any bugs in there so far.
Thanks OPERA team !

Sounds good: download support, skins, speed dial bookmarks, font size, zoom image support; souns really nice, gotta give it a try later today.

p.s. i'm running opera mini on a motorola v975 - which just surprised me by being able to play a downloaded realaudio file (.rm)!

v2.0 really seems to work fine, the forward navigation was another important feature missing.
only thing irritating me a little is, it seems to take (notably) longer to go to the bookmarks list - why's that?

Comment from digg.com on Mini 2.0:

As a J2ME developer I can tell you those guys at opera are gods. When you look at the tools you have to develop this thing and how well it works you can only be admirative.

Using Samsung A800 and always on mini 2.0! Works GREAT (I LOVE the browser mini) but my image downloads do not work. It opens the image in my native browser but I cannot download it. I also do not (as of yet) know the sites to download the images more easily (as read).

When will the A800 have a custom browser??

By saltytostitos, # 22. May 2006, 18:22:46

1.Why after every download opera mini is automatically closed?
2.After manual exit in SonyEricsson K700i or after network fail effect of animated menus is lost!!!
3.There is no minimize or hide function for nearlt all models of SonyEricsson.
Besides everything is good.Nice idea.Pretty interface.Don't be lazy make some new skins! Thanks 4 all!

Have been running opera mini on my 6630 for abt a month now and love it.Well nearly all of it,I have one quibble.
- when i download stuff opera mini has to close and my horrible slow Orange standard browser takes over.I then have to re-load Opera to carry on surfing.
Is there any chance of a patch or upgrade being produced that stops this from happening?
