Opera Mobile

- Eskil reporting from behind the scenes...

Opera for Windows Mobile 5.0

, ,

After launching Opera for Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone on June 30, the response from users worldwide has been overwhelming. And the fact that T-Mobile chose to include it on their new Windows Mobile SDAII smartphone says something about the quality of Opera compared to certain native browsers... :-)

More news to come:

A lot of people have been asking when Opera will be available for Pocket PC, and we are working hard on making this happen as soon as we can. In fact, we will have the first TP out very soon. This will be for Windows Mobile 5.0, which I am sure will please a lot of you out there!

UPDATE:
I realize it wasn't clear above: Opera for PPC will of course be available on both Windows Mobile 2003 and 5.0 (or 2005). :-)

A spotlight on Opera for mobileOpera Mini: Soon available to all!

Any updates on the status of Opera for WM5 would be greatly appreciated. I have a PPC6700 and well ummmm I guess if I am using Opera here you know how I feel about ie.

eskils 31. October 2005, 16:40

Not long now ;-) The beta is just awaiting final approvals. It looks beautiful, and I am sure you will not be disappointed!

..and now?

Another ppc-6700 device owner, frustrated with IE...

famusc 7. November 2005, 14:36

I can't wait anymore: Pocket Internet Explorer is so frustrating!
Is it possible to see a technical preview like for 7.60 for smartphone?

RImhoff 7. November 2005, 16:22

All of us still waiting.... Be nice, let us the possibility of play with the beta version.....

nicovb 7. November 2005, 22:18

Mmmm, not long... Well, for sure a good way to let me check opera.com every day... ;-)

passive 9. November 2005, 19:42

I can barely wait. Minimo has honestly been getting better (it's support for VGA resolution is much better), but it is so slow it is effectively unusable.
Go Opera!

eskils 9. November 2005, 21:04

My apologies for being a couple of days late on answering these posts. We had planned to have the TP out around mid/end of October, but we had to change priorities. I can't make any promises as I don't control the engineering team, but my best guess would be December for the TP - but don't kill me if it comes out before - or after... I am waiting just like you!

wolfprince79 10. November 2005, 06:26

Thank you for that information-----Will you still be making announcements here ,or will they also be in the main forum section as well?

eskils 10. November 2005, 08:18

I will make announcements here, but when the time comes, we'll also put it in the forums.

zeroK 11. November 2005, 13:52

Does this also include Windows Mobile 2003 SE? IIRC there were some bigger differences between the various WM2003 builds, but I could be wrong there :-?

eskils 15. November 2005, 00:20

As we already have a version available for 2003 SE we will prioritize making the PPC available first. An updated version of 2003 SE is then likely to follow. Please know that these public builds and their dates really depend on our project deliveries, so dates are tentative, but I am hoping (and pushing) for a public version of Opera for PPC in December.

eskils 23. November 2005, 10:17

Just to keep you in the loop (I know a lot of people are waiting for this!) - Due to urgent customer delivieries we've had to push the public version of Opera 8.5 for Windows Mobile PPC into January. I know - it sucks for us who are waiting for it... But hey: what a great start of the year that will be! :-)

FataL 7. December 2005, 03:11

OMG! I just got HP iPAQ hw6515 (as replacemant to my broken Nokia cellphone), and I was about to run Opera Mobile. But... got:
The file "\Windows\AppMgr\Install\Opera Software Opera.CAB" is not a valid Windows CE Setup file.
Aaaa-aaa! Can't wait. :D Pocket IE is so crappy on big screens, and I'm not saing how sites looks in IE on 240x240. :yuck:
New Opera Mobile for New Year holidays, pleeease. p:
Update: Just installed Minimo. It's suck (version 0.11) even more than Pocket IE, in my opinion. I really liked Opera Mobile for S60, so I'm look forward for Opera version for Windows Mobile 2003 SE.

eskils 8. December 2005, 11:07

Glad to hear your comments! You're up for a treat in January ;-)

-m3tac0rt3x- 8. December 2005, 19:31

Oh man, can't wait anymore!!!

Can't you push it back, instead on foward?

Hoping it will come out sooner .. cause i`m so tired of using pocket ie (suck suck suck), and the alternatives .. OMG!!

best luck to the dev`s....

kimmoj 15. December 2005, 12:38

I for one am wondering how well Opera will work on VGA screens, but I guess we'll all see in January.

ortizlgnd 15. December 2005, 20:08

I've heard a lot about Opera and want to see what all the hype is about. I'm hoping that it's great. Presently I have NETFRONT, Thunderhawk II, and MultiIE and all of them are crap. Will Opera have FULL java support? I hope so, cuz I can't stand browsers that display a beautiful site but don't allow you to click on all of the buttons/links. Also, what about media enabled sites that play videos etc. right on the site's page rather than switching to your Pocket pc's media player? Will Opera support that? Please say Yes, Please say Yes, Please!!!!!!!!

ortizlgnd 15. December 2005, 20:12

Another question...........How much is it gonna cost?

spacechild 16. December 2005, 11:30

Can you post a couple of genuine screenshots? I'm also interested how VGA rendering will look like. There are a few websites that claim to have screenshots of Opera for Windows Mobile, but I think those are all Opera mini running in a JVM on a Pocket PC.

nolovelust 1. January 2006, 00:41

yes it is january now pls we want our opere for ppc :D

nolovelust 1. January 2006, 00:44

FIXATOR 13. January 2006, 09:57

Where is my Opera for WM2003?

inhibitech 14. January 2006, 04:47

Elvin_Atombender 16. January 2006, 11:23

-m3tac0rt3x- 16. January 2006, 23:33

Come on, come on, where is it ? :D

gimme gimme gimme :D

srmz 17. January 2006, 05:00

So at least it is confirmed that Opera for WM5 PPC will not be available on 16th January. How about January 07

FIXATOR 18. January 2006, 10:52

FINALY!!!!

Sonho 18. January 2006, 11:54

Wow, it was worth the wait. OK it's beta with bugs but it's useable where PIE isn't.

eskils 18. January 2006, 22:03

Hope you like it! Remember, this is a beta with still a few things we will improve. But I think it's really good.

srmz 19. January 2006, 04:23

Thankyou Opera for such a nice product. As many said Worth the Wait.

But a small wish list:

1) if it can handle mail attachments on web based mail sites such as Gmail

2) If it was possible to define user agent so it can open full sites rather being forced to mobile optimized sites such as the full hotmail and not the mobile msn

3) if it would support flash plug in

But the above are only very minor things. Overall never seeen anything like this. Well done and thank you.

Raza Zaidi
