Executive Office Suite Sexual Harassment and You

, , ,

Sexual harassment is a form of sexual discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This describes that harassment goes into two categories, that which is quid pro quo (or the equal exchange or substitution) and the other being a hostile work environment.

Quid pro quo sexual harassment is when a person of a higher rank or position employs his or her authority against a lower ranked employee and garners sexual favors or activities of a sexual nature in order for the victim to gain some form of benefit within his or her power. Favors consist of illicit activities that could put the whole company in a scandal, not to mention that the victim usually ends up losing more than what he or she might gain.

In a hostile work environment, the conditions are far worse. The employee is subjected to violence and discrimination based on his or her sex, and the work conditions are enough to cause severe physical or mental damage to the worker. Physical violence, mental trauma, social withdrawal and the likes exist in this situation of sexual harassment. Also, a person's worth is also undermined due to their gender. Off color jokes, usually of a sexual nature are spread, or digital photoshopping of person's head onto some lewd pictures that are posted in an open environment are some of the examples.

The law only works if the victim himself takes initiative and action in bringing the case to light. There have been a lot of cases in the past when victims didn't have the guts to bring it to court and delayed it for months or even years. This will not work, it will only nullify the case against the harasser. Victims should report sexual harassment as soon as possible to the authorities. If the management is unable to take responsibility for this, or if they ignore it; this can also be grounds for harassment from them.

In a quid pro quo case, a victim should never accept any form of compensation or payment for a sexual favor. If you agree to the conditions, it could undermine your character and the worth of the case as well. As much as possible, resist all possible benefits you might get and report your case at once to your attorney or lawyer.
