Cataracts – Understanding the effects and what to expect

, , ,

Cataract Surgery Beverly Hills utilizes the latest advances in vision correction technology to provide cataract sufferers with relief from their vision impairment.  Cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye which impedes the passage of light. Most cases of cataract are related to the ageing process and cannot be prevented, but cataract surgery and insertion of an intraocular lens are highly effective, resulting in almost immediate visual rehabilitation. There are two main surgical techniques for removing a cataract. In extracapsular cataract extraction, the lens capsule is opened and the nucleus of the lens and the cortex are removed, leaving the posterior capsule in place. In phacoemulsification, an ultrasound probe is used to fragment the lens, which is aspirated through a small incision. Subsequent to the removal of the cataract lens, a clear, artificial intra-ocular lens is implanted in its place to restore vision. Light spectacles are often necessary to compensate for the loss of accommodation. At Cataract Surgery Los Angeles, each patient is carefully examined before surgery, allowing for the highest possible accuracy in determining which lens power will suit the patient best.
At Cataract Los Angeles, cataract surgery is performed when the quality of a person’s vision affects his/her quality of life. At a previous consultation, surgeons at Cataract Los Angeles explain to their patients what they may expect from cataract surgery, about the possible risks, how well they might see afterwards and about the various lens implant options available to them. Cataract surgery is done under local anesthesia and usually takes less than 15 minutes to complete. Carried out under an operating microscope, a small incision is made into the eye that rarely needs to be sutured. Ultrasound energy is used to break up the lens, which is then removed. A tiny intraocular lens is then placed inside the eye to replace the natural lens that was removed.
Glaucoma is an eye disease that, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. In eyes with glaucoma, the eye pressure is usually higher than normal. The front of the eye is filled with clear fluid (aqueous) that flows in through a spigot and flows out through a drain. In glaucoma, the drain of the eye gets plugged, and fluid coming into the eye cannot get out, thus raising the eye pressure. This high eye pressure leads to nerve damage, which leads to sight loss. Glaucoma Treatment Beverly Hills is a leading eye care provider of the region. Its ophthalmologic surgeons are amongst the most experienced and well trained in the entire country. Glaucoma is treated by lowering the eye pressure to prevent further damage. One common way to lower eye pressure is to use eye drop medication. Eye drop medications work by lowering the eye pressure by either turning down the spigot or opening up the drain of the eye. Another way to lower the eye pressure is with Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty or SLT. In SLT, the laser treatment is applied to the drain of the eye in order to open it up and let fluid exit the eye more efficiently. SLT treatment takes only a few minutes, is safe, and effectively lowers eye pressure in most people. SLT enables patients to avoid eye drops entirely.
