Saving X-mas (for later)

The importance of breakfast

A person should consume at least 400 or 500 calories during breakfast. It is considered by experts that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as people who skip it tend to experience adverse effects in their metabolism, concentration rate and weight. I learned that the hard way p:

The Saints are Coming

If there's a team that can end the Saints' perfect season, it's the Dallas Cowboys

That's what I said a couple of weeks ago before witnessing the Cowboys two games losing streak that jeopardized their playoffs hopes.

The Cowboys tend to play to the level of their rivals: if they're top-notch teams, the Cowboys play great and beat them but if they're underdogs, the Cowboys somehow manage to lose those games. That theory got reinforced today with a win over the perfect up to this point New Orleans Saints.

It's not like they won the Super Bowl or anything, they have yet to earn a playoff spot and win a playoff game, but they displayed that they can win -actually- football games, at least a BIG football game.

The Cowboys victory occurred at the Louisiana Superdome where, three years ago, U2 and Green Day performed their cover of the Skids' "The Saints are Coming" in benefit of the victims of the hurricane Katrina.

Second semester

,

This week wouldn't be complete without a post about school. I dedicated most of this semester to work and developed a not-so-efficient homework delivering system: this was to deliver all of my products upon deadline. That didn't seem to work well all of the times since I ended up not sending a couple of them (perhaps a little bit more than a couple).

But this week, I set to deliver everything I needed to before December 19th. As I write this post, I've only got one Math homework to do and send and I think that another one to correct so that's it. Apart form that, I sent everything I needed to and now I just have to wait for grades to see what needs to be corrected.

This weekend is my last at work before vacation too, so I just have to do a couple of review units and apply all of my exams, meaning that I can switch back to "take it easy" mode, like someone very smartly called my way of life.

But hey! I haven't received complains about my JOB, I think I'm doing it pretty well

Millenium 1: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the first book of the Millenium Trilogy written by Swedish author Stieg Larsson. The book was published after Larsson's unexpected death and became a best seller. Like Mikael Blomkvist, the main male character of his book, Larsson was a journalist and wrote the novels in his free time, unfortunately, he never got to see his published work. The story is set in Sweden, particularly in Stockholm and Uppsala and the author makes reference to a lot of personal preferences and -probably- fantasies, for example, Mikael and Lisbeth Salander, the main female character, both use Mac laptop computers, spend the story eating bagels and sandwiches and, like Mikael, the author was a reporter. Needless to say, Mikael scores with all the female characters of the book, Lisbeth included.

Although it features some theory on Economics and sometimes flirts too much with History to explain the background of a character or situation I really liked the book, some people might see those things as a plus but there were times when I really grew desperate to see what happened next while Stieg explained how Swedish enterprises operate.

There are references to a couple of software programs that called my attention, I looked up for them and learned that they actually exist, they are NotePad Deluxe, "A fast and powerful notepad for Macintosh" and Graphic Converter "A very small image processing software with powerful functions".

I'm not giving away any details since it may result in spoilers for someone who's currently reading so I'll just say that I'm glad I selected this series to read before the end of this year, if you have the chance to read this, don't hesitate and do it

My Sassy Girl

Lately, there's been a lot of talk about the Korean (and original version) of "My Sassy Girl". Last year, as expected, it was remade in the USA.

The movie is a romantic comedy featuring the mishaps of a guy after he meets a drunk girl in the subway and how they slowly fall in love. It's directed by Yann Samuel, an unknown French filmmaker and, although it's clearly stated that is based upon the Korean film, it features several cultural changes from the original version.

The movie is set in present New York City, and greatly features Central Park. The characters are Jordan (Elisha Cutberth) and Charlie (Jesse Bradford); the fact that the female character has an actual name is one of the most prominent changes from the original version. The movie is about how Jordan gets over her death ex-boyfriend with the help of Charlie, while falling for each other in the process. Another mayor change in this version is how that they explain that the girl's boyfriend died by drowning. The rest of the plot is a condensed version of the original story, sealing the relationship at the end with a kiss, the third and most americanized change in the storyline.

I think it's an interesting movie because it shows how a very good foreign film can be stripped out of its originality to become yet another American romantic comedy, featuring all the elements of one: the encounter, the conflict, the happy ending and of course, the inclusion of a stupid 'wise' friend that guides the main character through the drama.

Although I'm not saying it's a good film (not even the studio thought it was, since they made it a direct-to-DVD release), I think any fan of "My Sassy Girl" should see it just for the sake of completion. Just to embrace the Korean film a little bit more and to value the treasure it represents.

The saddest thing is that it actually got some exposure in some movie theaters in MX earlier this year and people think this is an original movie :frown:

Sunday morning breakfast

For breakfast I cooked a strawberry omelette and prepared some chocolate (yes, I CAN prepare omelettes). I was very happy because I found an unopened pair of iPod earphones, so now I can give Manato back his. I also finished a program that was bugging me since last week and caught up with some procrastinated UAM work.

Right now, I'm downloading a couple of soundtracks which I expect to be rather nice

Freelance Wild Frog

The Wild Frogs are UAM-X's mascot, I didn't know that until recently. Last week, I went to deliver some magazines I picked up for my ex-employer and I ended up taking a freelance job. Only 4 hours a week for the rest of the trimester to build her portfolio and upload it to the net.

I have 3 weeks to finish the job starting today. First, I had to build a comprehensive database containing all the activities comprising this year's portfolio (I used FreeMind for that) and make a list according to the categories UAM established for every item, then I have to upload everything to the UAM's system, then to Conacyt.

It's not a fantastic job, but it ain't to bad either. At least I get to practice some information searching and PDF unlocking skillz
